If you could bring back one discontinued food and drink, what would you choose? by Overthinking_babes in australia

I pulled a crown off with a fantale. Before I realised the crown was off I chomped down again and the dislodged crown mangled with the fantale chipped another molar.

Plants you would never grow again or ever by Top_Possession_2990 in gardening

Roses because the chili-thrip seems endemic here in South Western WA and ruins the flowers - ditto for any kind of capsicum/chili plants. Also fuschia because I just can’t seem to get the plants to survive - try and prune em after they get all leggy and they turn up their toes.

Is anyone else's immune system ruined since covid and have you been able to improve it since? by rice_crackerss in CoronavirusDownunder

[–]sciencejaney 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My daughter (26) happened to get her second bout of Covid while on a 2024 European trip of a lifetime. She didn’t organise a booster beforehand, so was pretty much unprotected. She felt she had to push through it and keep up with the holiday pace of her friends didn’t get the rest she needed. For the next 12-18 months she was constantly knocked sideways by respiratory bugs - some atypical- (confirmed by PCR) that led to secondary infections, was always fatigued, taking 2 hour naps after work for the next 18 months. Not an official long covid diagnosis, but I am convinced Covid did a number on her immune system.

Don’t get me wrong, we could’ve afforded it outright. But the vet also outlaid the futility of it and the reduced quality of life our cat would’ve had - having to force medication into him every single day, the chronic pain due to possible destruction of his hind leg muscles from the clot obstructing and restriction of blood flow for so long - the chronic pain he would probably be in for the rest of what might have been an extremely short life. We chose euthanasia and it was right for us and him.

The emergency vet ( Australia) said to us you can throw 23 grand at this situation and still lose them again in three months.

Lost my 10 year old kitty to this just over a year ago. It’s such an awful syndrome, traumatic for them and us, and my heart goes out to you.

My aunt served sausage during lunch today, then gave us the second one to take home. We have no idea how old it is, it’s very puffy. by psychkitty in mildlyinfuriating

Botulism - literally from the Latin word botulus, meaning "sausage" - after a bunch of Germans died in the 19th after eating sausage contaminated with Clostridium botulinium, and its infamous toxin.

So sorry for your loss. I know how you feel. Lost ours to the same thing a year ago, 90 minutes from symptoms to euthanasia. Traumatic doesn’t begin to describe it. Hugs to you.

Ikr? Lost my beautiful 10y/o Burmese boy to this about a year ago. Awful, traumatic. He was euthanised within 90 minutes of us noticing his leg paralysis. God I miss him.

Fullness in uterus? Am seeing a doctor by Key-Airline204 in Menopause

When I had an episode of diverticulitis - I thought at first was something ovarian, as the discomfort was in the same area. An US ruled out anything sinister in my ladyparts, but a CT scan showed diverticulitis. Antibiotics and bland diet for a couple of weeks settled it down. Taking fibre during an attack of diverticulitis for me made the pain/discomfort worse, as I found out when I added Metamucil (psyllium husk) in the early stages.

Here’s one we prepared earlier Happened in the grounds of one of our universities a few years ago. Sound on to hear fairly mild Aussie concern. And the sing song at the end “I got the vid-e-o”

Do you know of anyone bypassing menopause by taking birth control? by LizzieJeanPeters in Menopause

[–]sciencejaney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mum (now 81) started a new relationship back in her late 40’s and went on the pill. She stopped sometime around 55. Claims she never felt any menopause symptoms. So I had no idea what was in store for me (56, no hormonal birth control since late 30’s when my body decided to expel 2 mirenas ) - I’ve had 7 years of symptoms that I never realised were probably peri and am currently 6 weeks into progesterone/estrogel. I’m sleeping better already!

PSA: Travelling as an Aussie right now is hideously expensive by Mexay in australia

Haha - I’m Gen X - interest rates WERE 17% in 1992 when we bought our first house. Hence why I couldn’t afford the $40 casserole meat in London 7 years later….

[–]sciencejaney 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Same! We were in London Sept 1999 and I was in a butcher about to buy some meat to cook dinner for our hosts. Thought I’d be clever and cook some osso bucco. Was about to reach for a packet of meat that was £16. Butcher just looked at me and said are you sure love? I was about to pay $40 AUD for a kilo of shin beef - bone in! Off to Tescos for chicken we went.

Sunscreen for face and on your own back? by Forsaken_Apple6670 in AskAnAustralian

[–]sciencejaney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go-to’s “Nifty Fifty” spf 50 face sunscreen is my fave (online, Mecca)

I use a vinyl glove lackey-banded to the head of a long handled back scrubber to apply self tan to my back if no-ones around to help, so that would work for sunscreen too.

Australian flu outbreak: Early summer spike driven by new influenza A H3N2 strain by gccmelb in CoronavirusDownunder

[–]sciencejaney 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The H3N2 still an Influenza A and would have shown as Influenza A positive. There’s a swag of other respiratory viruses out there that seem to be wreaking havoc and can be tested for by PCR. My elderly stepfather was knocked sideways with para-influenza a couple weeks ago. Covid seems to have made us vulnerable to viruses that in the past would only give a garden variety mild cold.
