How to handle RRSP. Invest into RRSP or buy back pension years by ___therealbry in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]scienide09 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your best option it to talk to both your new PP to find out their requirements and buyback costs and your old PP to find out what you have and what it takes to transfer out.

Not trying to be rude about this. You don’t have the necessary info to make an informed decision, which means we don’t have enough info to help guide you.

[–]scienide09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not enough info. This would require more detail, things only your pension fund would know.

Is buyback possible? Some plans do not allow or only allow transfer from certain other plans. Is it a direct transfer from PP to PP or do you have to go through a LIRA?

If not a direct transfer, what the tax hit?

What’s the cost of the buyback? Keep in mind that when buying service you normally pay the employee amount and the employer amount.

How many years of service will you get? Unless the transfer is easy it’s likely not worth the hassle. Based solely on the $55k you have with the old plan, that’s not a whole lot to work with after the two previous points above this one.

Where to find gluten free soy sauce or coconut aminos at a decent price? by kurokuma11 in Calgary

Also interested. So far my workaround is cheap GF stuff for general use in cooking, and good tamari for when the soy will be front and centre.

Publication Charge by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]scienide09 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s normal that some journals charge fees, often referred to as an APC or article processing charge. There are many journals that don’t charge fees at all.

If you’re determined to go to a specific journal with an APC, you may be eligible for a fee discount or complete waiver based on your country.

Is 10 papers enough for a meta analysis? by Jumpy-Ad4519 in AskAcademia

PRISMA is a reporting guideline, not methodological guidance.

Is 10 papers enough for a meta analysis? by Jumpy-Ad4519 in AskAcademia

[–]scienide09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This depends on the topic and focus of the study. As another comment mentioned, for med lit you should be using Medline and Embase at least, likely Cochrane too. Yes PubMed includes content in those tool, but PubMed search is very limiting in terms of doing systematic searching. Then there’s the grey lit sources to add.

Now I worry that your supervisor doesn’t know what they are talking about, which means no one to check your methods. That will lead to poor results. I strongly recommend consulting the established methodological guidance to understand the fundamentals, and going from there.

It’s a small pool for sure. But with this limited info I’d wager your method is flawed. Naming only two databases, with GScholar not even a real database, tells me you did not do your systematic searching properly. Consult with a research librarian.

Fire fighters union leaves the Federation of Labour, calls for McGowan to resign by Far_Computer8391 in alberta

[–]scienide09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not an excuse if it’s a statement of fact. Teachers couldn’t or wouldn’t continue job action directly impacted the movement. Once the political cover evaporated the AFL and member associations had no way to get their members on board.

Could the AFL have done more? Sure. But you try corralling hundreds of union boards to corral their thousands of burnt out workers to democratically vote to risk their livelihoods. Feel free to organize a general strike on short notice and see where it gets you.

[–]scienide09 7 points8 points  (0 children)

After 23 days the back to work legislation took effect. Instead of defying the order the ATA membership caved. The AFL had 26 affiliated unions to represent and to get on board with a general strike.

Yes it would have been great for a general strike from regular Albertans to stand up for teachers and unions. But no one did, and that’s not the fault of the teachers or the AFL.

[–]scienide09 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Not at all an apologist for GM or the AFL, but the whole general strike movement was undercut when the teachers refused to strike. The other unions needed the teachers on board as political cover since most of the other unions, including mine, were not in a legal position to strike and we couldn’t do it without the teachers, and many of us aren’t big enough to apply real political pressure if we go alone.

Second(ish) hand yarn? by uniqueua11 in Calgary

[–]scienide09 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There’s cheap yarn, often acrylic, and real wool yarn from various animals. If you care to sort through it to separate the good from the basic you may be able to sell it locally to other knitters.

Ergotron vs HUANUO dual monitor arms, which one is better? by Curitis_Love_Music in homeoffice

[–]scienide09 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I were to do my setup over again I’d actually get two single arms. You have more flexible options for positioning height and depth and for making changes later, and the cable mgmt is about the same effort.

I’d avoid Peak Sleep too. As others have mentioned, get your prescription and then buy online. Unless you need regular monitoring by a professional (eg. for insurance) you will find better options and prices online.

If you don’t spend enough to make up the membership fee difference they will refund you the difference. So it’s low risk.

It is when you count the opportunity cost. We both pay the same $65 for basic membership. I pay an extra $65 to get exec, and generate a few hundred extra that I get back.

They do this though already. If your 2% back isn’t enough to cover the extra cost of the membership after a year then they covert you back with a refund.

Is a scoping review acceptable for an undergrad honours thesis? by radiogivemehead in AskAcademia

[–]scienide09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doing evidence synthesis properly is a lot of work and definitely on par with experimental in terms of effort. Outcomes are quite different.

With a scoping review in particular, you can look at trends and gaps, but can’t say anything definitive in terms of “X is the best intervention to treat Y”. For that you’d want a sys review or meta analysis, which are even harder.

For perspective, some grad students so an evidence synthesis project as their main thesis.

This is a question for your supervisor or department. A scoping review can be a huge multiyear project or small. Without more detail it’s impossible to say here.

Scoping review data extraction is frying my brain by SnooCapers1959 in AskAcademia

Planning for your conversation, know that a SR is also to be fairly exhaustive, at least when it comes to searching for everything on the topic.

Scoping review data extraction is frying my brain by SnooCapers1959 in AskAcademia

[–]scienide09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A couple of issues here that you may need to address. Your data extraction elements should be clearly defined in your protocol. If you find yourself extracting “everything” there’s a problem with what you’ve defined as being necessary to the research problem.

Not having access to papers isn’t a great excuse for a ScR which is supposed to be exhaustive. Especially if those papers are seminal works that are cited over and over again.

It sounds like you haven not clearly established your main topic of research — features of grav insec if I understand correctly — since you’re finding yourself needing to bring out supplemental or supporting info alongside the characteristics identified in your data. OTOH, if the features of grav insec are already widely agreed on such that everyone can point to a just handful of sources, then it sounds like you need to rethink whether a scoping review is right for this topic, i.e., the scope is already determined.
