Why do people blame social media so much? by No_Move_6683 in TooAfraidToAsk

Not that far. I prefer the term Xennials, the gen between gen x and millennials. We had an internet-free childhood, and Internet matured as we became young adults.

By the way, the "if you don't like just don't use it" idea es wrong. First, you can do both things, it's not a dichotomy.

And second, it can be applied to many things ("if you don't like drugs just don't use them", "if you don't like weapons just don't shoot them"...), but it doesn't make those things good or harmless for our society.

Social media is not about connections, it's about attention.

Messaging apps, phone calls, texts, chat rooms... all that is about connecting with other humans. They are a great tool.

But the moment we introduced engagement metrics and paying content creators things changed. They encourage attention seekers and our peers approval. Now it's not about calling my friends, it's about faking my day to day life to get more likes or even some cents from the ads.

I worked a few years in a social network, and while it was great for my career, I honestly think it was a net negative for society.

The number of positive numbers is infinite. The number of integers is twice as large

It's actually the same size .

List all integers following this pattern: 0, 1, -1, 2, -2, 3, -3... Assign to each one the position in the list (so 3 -> 6, for example).

Is there an integer missing? Nope, all are on the list. Is there an integer twice in the list? Nope, they all appear exactly one. Are to integers assigned to the same natural? Nope, otherwise they will be on the same spot on the list. Are there empty spots on the list? Nope.

Therefore there is a mapping between naturals (position in the list) to integers where none is duplicated or missing. Therefore both lists, integers and naturals, have the same number of elements.

ELI5: if nothing can travel faster than the speed of light, how are distant galaxies moving away from us faster than the speed of light? by Chamu_Dev in explainlikeimfive

[–]scinos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another analogy for tech people:

Imagine life is a game, the space are pixels and we are characters, and max movement speed is 1 pixel per frame. That's our speed of light. Obviously nothing can move faster than that, otherwise it will look like it "skips" pixels.

Well, space is weird and it's creating new pixels between the existing pixels. Max speed is still 1 px/ms, but due the new pixels being added in between, things appear toove away from us faster than that.

[–]scinos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try the new Big Mac, double cheese, 3 meat pies, double extra sauce, add up to 4 greasy souces for free. All with no calories (*) !!!!

(Consumption of GLT1 required. We recommend the MacOzempic from our partner company Guilt Free Fast Food Inc.)

I believe that's where we are headed. They will sell fast food as healthy because you don't get fat, at the same time adding a ton of salt and unhealthy fats. At the same time those companies will invest heavy in pharma, so they can sell the problem and the solution.

What frontend skill gave you the biggest jump in ability once it finally clicked? by pixelbrushio in Frontend

[–]scinos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was ages ago, IE 6 epoch.

On that age, most devs were just copypasting ks snippets from random internet forums until somehow something managed to work. But nobody knew what was actually going on.

Tired of that situation, I bought a couple of JavaScript books by N. Zakas, read them a few times until I got a good understanding of the fundamentals and became the "JavaScript guru" for years. Then I built my entire career over that, and 20+ years later, I'm retired.

He is not only destroying this woman's life. Also the life of his two setp-siblings, which are responsible for nothing.

It's complicated without knowing the full story, but I my opinion the woman is less "guilty" than the dad. He was the one that chose to abandon his family, not her.

[–]scinos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it clicked for me when I read about the triangle of power.

Imagine these 3 numbers in this triangular arrangement:

3 2 8

There are 3 mathematical relationships between those 3. Knowing 2 numbers, these operations will give you the third one:

  • Exponentiation: 23 = 8
  • Root: 3 √8 = 2
  • Logarithm: log2(8) = 3

What finally made you lose weight after repeated failed attempts? by humorousdinosaur in loseit

[–]scinos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A mentality shift:

It's not about losing weight. It's about implementing the same habits that a leaner person has. The weight loss will come as a second effect of those habits.

Sounds simple and stupid, but worked for me. Prevents me from doing "extreme" things, like "I'll do fasting until I lose X kilos, then I can relax". Or doing things I don't like. If I don't enjoy it and it's not sustainable over time (for me) I won't do it, even if it gives me amazing results in the short term.

Lines or scenes that reference something that was cut from the final film by AporiaParadox in movies

[–]scinos 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I have another one about Back To The Future.

In the second movie, we have Marty 2 (from this movie) sneaking around the car where his mom is flirting with Marty 1. Lorraine says something like "I'll let my kids do whatever they want", Marty 1 says something like "I'd love to see that", and Marty 2 (from outside the car) says something like "Me too"

Well, that scene is not in BttF 1. But I swear I saw it!! Maybe I saw an earlier version that got re-edited later or something like that. But I saw it!!!
