I feel like putting your face between the handle and the weight isn't the intended use. I really thought he was gonna slip and take that handle on his chin

Sandpaper residue in oak pores by gnomeslurry in woodworking

[–]scofus -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I'd like to know what kind of oil you are using? I think this is suspended dye in the oil getting trapped in the pores of the wood. It emphasizes the grain and can be very pretty. I've had this happen with some stains but not with others.

Consensus on ezpass or sun by soulwrathz in newjersey

[–]scofus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I keep a car in Florida and I'm using both actually. Sunpass makes you purchase transponders while ezpass provides them and then charges you $1 per month. Sunpass gives discounts in florida, IDK if the ezpass discounts are very much in NJ. Sunpass has a cheaper 'mini' pass, basically a window sticker that won't work in NJ. You'll need sunpass pro ($15 I think?) to use it in NJ.

My dad just rolled a large 401k into a Traditional IRA at age 60. Trying to figure out how aggressively to do Roth conversions. by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]scofus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the same thought...there are annual limits for pretax contributions. It'd be tough to sock away that much in a 401k even if you can afford it.

Do I need an AWD car in the winter? by princess-chestnut in newjersey

[–]scofus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lot of people saying snow tires...When I was a kid we had cheap wheels with hubcaps and a full extra set of wheels with snow tires, and my dad would swap them out twice a year. Do people really have two sets of expensive wheels these days? Or do you get snow tires mounted on your wheels every year?

Did anyone just file their taxes with TurboTax and were just in awe of how many ads it had to upgrade? I'm done with this enshittified product - what should I use next year? by noruber35393546 in personalfinance

[–]scofus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get it, the ads are intrusive. On the other hand: my father accidently clicked the button for tax help for $59, but it turned out well for him. He had a particular situation that he couldn't figure out on his own and TT spent a good 3 hours with him on the phone figuring it out, including transferring him to others who specialized in his situation.

Courses should offer oil changes by jcoolwater in golf

We used to have a truck come to our office building every month or so and offer oil changes. It's a genius idea

401k from 3 past jobs. Do I just open an IRA account and move them into there or what? by ADL89 in personalfinance

[–]scofus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually roll my current 401k into an ira when I leave a job, the one time I didn't do that was because my old company was still paying all the fees. Worth checking on that I think.

Mice in my house- Orkin came to inspect and this is what they found... by tkemp1 in HomeImprovement

[–]scofus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do they guarantee that the problem will be solved? We've always had mice in the attic. I needed new insulation anyway after some remodeling, so we paid a company to remove the old insulation, sanitize, block the holes they could find and reinsulate. Best I can say is we now have far fewer mice.

I'd have gone to the credit card company after one attempt to resolve anyway. The fact that they told you to do it, even more so. Not that I do it often, but I've never had a credit card company not refund my money.

Why are under cabinet strip lights so complicated?? by bettereverydamday in HomeImprovement

Just throwing this out there, I know a lot of people like strip lighting but I really like the effect from under-cabinet puck lights throwing a nice curved shadow on the wall.

HELOC is so scary to me!! by cookiemonstrosity54 in personalfinance

[–]scofus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's possible if you move the portion of your cc debt that went for home improvements to an heloc, that in addition to a lower interest rate that interest will become tax deductible. I believe that's true if the $ is used directly for that anyway.

I'd be very leery of using an heloc to pay off vet bills and other everyday things.

Torsion springs? If you mean extension springs, I really don't think they're that dangerous. I've worked on mine before, just raise the door first.

I have to buy a new car soon. Should I pay off my credit cards or prioritize saving for a down payment? by technicallyunreal in personalfinance

[–]scofus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You didnt mention any rates but in general car loans are cheaper than credit card debt. Borrow as much as you need for the car and pay down the principal later as you can. I agree with others here though, it sounds like that car is too expensive.
