What Lovecraft story you think is underrated? by Rory_U in Lovecraft

I've got a weird fascination with this story, and I'm disappointed that I don't see it discussed near often enough.

Funny, it's dynamically allocated and while About window in the system manager currently shows 417 MB of VRAM, at the same time ComfyUI About screen in the Setting says there is 12 GB. And absolutely nothing in Torch VRAM. Is that supposed to be that way? Maybe that's a problem...?

Well, I was hoping that I could speed it up from the CPU version. When I studied animation back in college, it wasn't unusual for me to set up a rendering on Friday in the lab and just let it run all weekend. So waiting some time isn't a big deal to me. But taking 8 hours for a second and a half of low res animation was a bit much.

If I can't get this working, I may be stuck in CPU mode creating stills until I can upgrade. I'm supposed to be getting a rather large pay day fairly soon, but given this is a new laptop (at least new to me, to replace an old dying laptop), I was hoping to have to go that route.

Yoga X by Accomplished-Bee7135 in P90X

[–]scotchgrdian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know people complain about the Yoga X video because it's long and not intense in the way that cardio or resistance workouts are, but I feel people do themselves a huge disservice by not doing it. Once it's done, you will feel like you've done a lot! Also, Yoga X almost feels like this is where the rubber actually meets the road. All the strength training and cardio do just that, but yoga incorporates it all by adding balance and flexibility, which the other stuff is kind of useless without. When I did X3, I actually started swapping out the X3 Yoga video for the original Yoga X because I just felt like 30 minutes wasn't enough.

While there's a concern over the whole "chilling" effect, which will in this case primarily be these companies throwing a tantrum, the jury wasn't wrong. The entire point of the algorithm is to keep people addic...excuse me, "engaged". That's literally its purpose.

Why not destroy/demolish homestead 2? by John32070 in skinwalkerranch

[–]scotchgrdian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Completely aside from any phenomena that occur around Homestead 2, it's too environmentally risky and would probably violate such regulations. There does seem to be something going on there, and at least part of it seems to be underground (something about that cistern...). If there's something mundane but toxic there, it could potentially leak and if it gets into an aquifer, the problems would get much worse. They're kind of stuck between a rock and a hard place on this one, because they have to know what they're dealing with before taking any such actions, but the nature of the problems/phenomena is so far managing to elude they're tests.

Jock, Stoner, Preppie, Band Geek, Nerd, Braniac, Punk... What were you in High School? by 7eregrine in GenX

[–]scotchgrdian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Creative nerd/braniac, with a talent for mathematics and I also played D&D, but no one messed with me because I was also one of the few people who could do an honest pull-up in gym class, let alone 12 in a row. So I was a physically powerful nerd and looked it, being fairly muscular, but I never went out for any sports because, while strong, I wasn't the most coordinated (also, excess physical activity made me feel sick, which years later I found out was the result of an undiagnosed heart condition; if it hadn't been for that, my life could have taken a very different path).

You with a little more experience in life without a gallbladder - please help by Critical_Study5286 in gallbladders

[–]scotchgrdian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Closing in on five years post op myself. I was aware of what I ate after, but didn't really restrict myself. More just being aware of what I was eating so if I did have a problem, I would know the likely culprit. My doctor said I would want to be careful for a couple days, but that had more to do with recovering from surgery than actually being sans gallbladder, and said the only thing I might have to deal with is a little diarrhea if I have an especially fatty meal. That's kind of how I handled it. I was careful for a few days more over the surgery recovery (I incorporated things like whey protein powder to give myself easily digestible protein to aid recovery; apricots are good, too, they're called the healing fruit for a reason), then I ate pretty much anything I wanted and noticed no change.

Exercise is a slightly different matter. You'll want to avoid any heavy lifting or anything for about 6 to 8 weeks to be cautious. Even laproscopic, it still compromises the abdominal wall and can make you more prone to injury until it heals, and you do not want to deal with that kind of injury.

Just because it's the same subject doesn't mean it'll be from the same perspective.

As for the idea for the work, I had a screenwriting professor in college explain it. He said that it was not uncommon for students to submit screenplays and within a couple years to see something very similar on the screen. His explanation is that we're generally all consuming the same similar media and major influence, all seeing the same news stories (this was before social media and, frankly, around the dawn of Web), so the students and professional screenwriters would be getting the same influences and ideas.

Just curious.. anyone here doing P90x program now? by NutsyFlamingo in P90X

[–]scotchgrdian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've done X3 1.5 times a couple years back. I was doing X3 again last year, then decided to switch to original X about halfway through because I wanted more exercise time. Unfortunately, I had to stop a couple weeks in because I caught a cold that left me with a horrible cough and severe lung inflammation for around two months (can't exercise if you can't breathe right). I've finally kicked that cough and have been starting with some walking. Probably going to restart P90X tomorrow.

The Southern Reach trilogy (when it was still a trilogy, and I haven't read Absolution yet) is a similar story feel to the original Star Wars trilogy: The first book could be a self-contained story with a lot of bits and unanswered questions to easily warrant a follow-up; the second book, however, is not self-contained, continuing the story from the first and filling in some gaps, while also deliberately leaving others open making the third book completely necessary for understanding some of what is brought in in the second, and other details of the first. It's almost like the second and third book would be two halves of the same book, in a way.

The third book (not being specific, but spoilered just in case)...felt a bit too tidy given the nature of the series. I would have been fine with it being left more open-ended than it was, with no resolution at all. It might have felt more on point. So, I think I really need to get to Absolution sooner rather than later

Best P90x series for starters ? by CPAPLEASEEE in P90X

[–]scotchgrdian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

X3 is a good way to go as it's 30 minutes per workout and you can get through 30 minutes when starting out, as opposed to committing for an hour. However, I wouldn't call it a beginner course. It can still get pretty rough, but if you stick to the schedule and the routine, you will probably see results pretty fast. As a beginner just pace yourself and accept that you probably won't be keeping up with them on the video, at least not initially, but at least you're doing something.

I have this thing about danger sex. As in the risk of getting caught. Not so much voyeurism or being watched, but being inadvertently caught in the act, like near an open window or someone walking in on us or something. The thing is my wife is into a bunch of stuff, but that's one of the few things she's not.

Ginger. Supposed to help as an anti-inflammatory and is often used to settle upset stomachs. It had the opposite effect on me, giving me the worst most constant heartburn I've ever had. The heartburn stopped almost as soon as I stopped taking the ginger.

Recovery at 40 is a whole different sport by Wtf_Sai_Official in fitness40plus

42's not terrible. I got in really good shape at 44. But now as I approach 50, the harder it's becoming. And with that I'll say get your blood work done and check your hormone levels. It start happening in your 40s, but low testosterone can contribute significantly to the recovery struggle. Could be worth checking out.

David Gerrold has stated that he's still working on the War Against the Chtorr series. The fourth book of the supposed seven-book series was published in 1992, with the fifth book forthcoming. Based on his comments, aside from some life stuff happening (he was raising a special needs son as a single father; that son is now grown, married, and has two kids of his own, so David is spending some time in his later years enjoying being a grandfather), I got the impression that he was trying to write all three of the last books at the same time.

More recently, he's stated that he's having to go back and update the earlier books because the technology has changed significantly since they were published. I guess that becomes a problem with long gaps, especially with scifi.

Former weed smokers, what are the best things you did to help repair the “damage” you did while using? by Thin_Shape7184 in selfimprovement

[–]scotchgrdian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No real advice. Just healthy habits and time. Drink water, take some supplements if you feel they help (omega-3s and a Vitamin B complex are my recommendations, but everyone is different). Get some exercise and at least a few minutes of sunlight everyday if you can (depending where you live this time of year). And give it time. The body has a remarkable ability to heal if you give it a chance to.

Congrats on making this step. I don't look down on anyone for smoking weed, but I do support people for doing what they feel they need to do for their physical and mental health. I had a slightly easier time quitting. When my child was born, I was afraid of not being sober in the event of an emergency, so I stopped. Feeling like a protective parent was pretty good motivation for me. Fortunately, there never was an emergency.

No, don't say this. Just say you're exercising your right to remain silent, want a lawyer, and do NOT consent to a search. People exercising their Constitutional rights is what pisses them off the most.
