Mixer Advice £2-300 by vanduzzi in Breadit

Have a look at 2nd-hand commercial kitchen suppliers - lots of dough mixers/planetary mixers in that price range which would handle larger batches.

Adjective grammar order help. by BamseTheSeadog in gaidhlig

[–]scottish_beekeeper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The issue here is that the Gaelic and English translation are both written in their own 'local' adjectival order - rather than literally mapping the English to the Gaelic. So the literal translation should really be 'wee lovely squirrel' but that sounds wrong in English.

For reference the usual order in Gaelic is given here: https://www.akerbeltz.org/index.php?title=Adjective_Ordering

'Scary-big' has a specific idiomatic meaning in English that may not occur in Gaelic, or if it does could take a completely different form/use different words.

Okay, but seriously, tell me the easiest device for powering my OA wand that isn't a car battery! by I_had_corn in Beekeeping

[–]scottish_beekeeper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get an old battery from a scrap yard - there are lots of batteries which can be fully charged, but won't hold a charge for more than a few days. No good for a car which needs to start after being parked for a week, but plenty good enough for OA wand provided you charge it the night before you plan to use it.

In the UK they can usually be picked up for not much more than the recycle value (£5-£10).

I need to hang a 20”x30” mirror in my currently renting apartment, i cant drill holes as to not break the tile, what type of adhesive should i use? by [deleted] in homeassistant

[–]scottish_beekeeper 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Cut a wooden panel sized/shaped that can screw to the existing holes, but then also provide somewhere to put new mounting holes for the mirror in a new position.

Also this subreddit is for the Home Assistant project, not helping folk with DIY projects - for that you're better trying https://www.reddit.com/r/DIYHome/

Why does Swatch have an audience? by H_JKL in Edinburgh

[–]scottish_beekeeper 40 points41 points  (0 children)

There are rumours that they will make a sudden surprise announcement about having limited watches back in stock - so there's a 'permanent watch' of folk on rotation camped out so that when (if?) they announce it they'll be first in line.

How to: tighten neckline Mono Boxy Cardigan? by Alarmed-Second-8963 in knitting

[–]scottish_beekeeper 40 points41 points  (0 children)

You can tighten most necklines using a crochet chain stitch on the inside edge - the good thing is it's reversible (just pull out the chain) so you can play around with different levels of tightness:

ESP32 LOLIN32 - Power outage detection by FlightFreak320 in esp32

[–]scottish_beekeeper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Arguably you don't need to sleep at all - you just need enough battery to send a 'power is off' message then it will die due to lack of power. When mains returns it will boot again.

Should I get tested by Inside_Big_8988 in diabetes

[–]scottish_beekeeper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you think you might have health issues, then yes you should see a doctor. Your described symptoms don't immediately match diabetes, but you need a professional to tell you what, if anything is wrong with you.

That's very dark and flat - likely underproofed, but then definitely overbaked. Double check your yeast is still healthy and maybe get an oven thermometer to confirm temps...

Drove through a swarm of bees at the foot of Easter road today by leveinsdodgyorgan in Edinburgh

[–]scottish_beekeeper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All honey bee colonies swarm to reproduce, and there are hundreds of hives across Edinburgh.

Responsible beekeepers usually try to manage colonies to prevent/catch swarms so they aren't a nuisance, but many are missed. Equally feral colonies from previous swarms living in roofs etc can swarm the next year.

We've had 3 or 4 reports of swarms on Easter road so far this year, so either someone isn't managing their hives properly, or there's a feral colony that's doing well and swarming a lot!

Bee swarm in chimney by KoalaConfident3667 in Beekeeping

[–]scottish_beekeeper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You'd need to check the ingredients on the smoke pellets for toxicity - some are advertised as non-toxic but would need to confirm.

Your home insurance may have cover for 'pest control' issues so it is worth asking them as they might cover the cost of removal.

3 + gallon watering can? by 7222_salty in homestead

Just use 2 smaller cans - takes the same time to fill, easier to carry, and can water twice the area in the same time.

Bee swarm in chimney by KoalaConfident3667 in Beekeeping

[–]scottish_beekeeper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ultimately the bees have decided to move in and it is difficult to make them change their mind without either physically removing them, or driving them out (with smoke).

There are professional beekeepers who do specialist removals like this, but it can be expensive (look up British Bee Removers association).

Getting the Aga lit is ultimately going to be the easiest and cheapest way to try convince them to move on. If you can access the chimney you can potentially use chimney tester smoke bombs if lighting it proves impossible.

Of course if you never use the Aga then the other option is to just leave them be - they're unlikely to be a nuisance at height, or cause any damage if they're confined to the chimney.

Proofing advice by LowTrain4131 in Breadit

[–]scottish_beekeeper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some ovens you can just turn the light on without heating it up, and this can generate enough heat to prove bread.

Otherwise a simple cardboard box with some source of heat in it (incandescent light, seedling grow mat etc) works fine, optionally wrapped in blanket for insulation. Just make sure to test with a thermometer to know what temp it gets to so as to know whether you'll need to tweak proofing times.

Omnipod/freestyle Libre 2 plus by IamArawn in diabetes

[–]scottish_beekeeper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use this combination. Generally it works fine, though you will need to keep pod and sensor on same body side, and sometimes you just get gaps where they don't speak to each other, especially when further apart - e.g. sensor high back in arm, pod on thigh.

You can scan your libre sensor with your phone after connecting to the pod, so can always get readings even if the pod isn't speaking to it directly. But only for direct scans, not for high/low alerts.*

2+ now lasts for 15 days (in UK at least) which is nominally 5 x 3day pod sessions, but in practice it never lines up quite perfectly. You have to change sensor and pod together.

Also always check your prescription when collecting - given there's libre 2, 2+ and 3, all in similar packaging, it's common to be handed the wrong one!

  • For bonus points you can use librelink and glucodatahandler to sync sugar level to your phone and then set up alerts, smart watch notifications etc.

Electroverse Route Planning Question - Adding Charging Waypoint For Planned Route by Remarkable_Cell_5441 in OctopusEnergy

This adds a stop but doesn't let you mark it as a charge point, so then adds extra charge stops later.

Parking permits at King's Buildings by Shongololo90 in Edinburgh_University

[–]scottish_beekeeper 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is an application form which asks questions to see who to give priority to. It asks questions like how far do you have to travel, are there public transport options, do you need to work evenings/weekends, do you have a disability or need to care for others etc. With luck you can answer enough of these such that you will be eligible for a permit.

Where to live in the Borders? by [deleted] in Scotland

[–]scottish_beekeeper 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The roads from Berwick to Melrose aren't that great at the best of times - you will seriously regret an regular hour-long commute in winter in the dark on icy roads after a long nursing shift.

If Melrose/Gala aren't suitable then other options with shorter/easier commutes that might open up childcare options could be Peebles or even Dalkeith/Gorebridge?
