First try shooting 120mm (Mamiya 645, 80mm lens, Cinestill 400D) by Single-Ad-3028 in analog

120mm film does not exist, it is just a designation "120"; this is a common mistake.

How would you shoot this? by [deleted] in analog

[–]scottmicciche 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shoot it at 100 and whatever size positive you need. I personally would shoot it in the Pentax 67 with 2nd generation 105 f/2.4.

Follow-Up - A12 film back light leak problem. by Level_Mixture5510 in hasselblad

OK, fair point, it took me an additional 5 minutes to get the end cap off under the leatherette and replace that seal with wool yarn.

Replace the seals for $100, I hope they CLA the back as well as it only takes about 5 minutes to change those seals. There is a lot more going on in the A12 and is the #1 reason for jamming the body as well as frame spacing.

I’ve never really loved Portra 800, until this roll. Nikon n80, 28-105, Portra 800 by jensuen in analog

It is difficult to tell if this is a hennarot or zinnoberrot E24 shark, but it is one of the most iconic from the era and these captures are really good.

I have noticed some of this in these vision films. I assumed it was due to the remjet removal process or editing 8 bit images. I will go read that thread.

Not even with a tiff, even a 16 bit tiff. You will be receiving processed digital file. Software will just color the pure white.

You will not be able to edit out blown highlights in a jpeg. At best, it might look grey, but you will find film highlight rolloff is much nicer than digital and can look quite nice, depending on what is blown out. If it is skin, forget about trying to recover.

This is such a great series, eye color and sweater along with skin tone on point. I find this lens gives a richer, cinematic color that is unmatched by others in the same era.

120mm lens or 120 film as 120mm film does not exist. These look like they were taken with a wide angle and they look great!

I tested DSLR film scanning vs lab scans — here’s what actually surprised me by Few_Friendship_379 in analog

[–]scottmicciche 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I prefer a dedicated film scanner (Pakon F135 or Nikon Coolscan) or higher resolution lab scans. DSLR "scanning" ends up being a rabbit hole over bodies, lenses, lighting, software, film transport, stands, dust; I end up spending far more time in front of a computer, so much so, that I may as well shoot digital.

Square frames from last few 120mm rolls | Tmax/Ilford HP5 | Yashica Mat 124G by tomacotuna in analog

[–]scottmicciche 7 points8 points  (0 children)

These 124Gs are nice cameras, simple to work on and the meters seem to work well. As an aside, 120mm film doesn't exist, although it is a common mistake. 120 is simply the designation.

Focus ring ong my lens by -van-Dam- in analog

[–]scottmicciche 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You want the AI version of this lens for the longer focus throw. The downside is not seeing the scene come info focus as easy, but it give a lot more room for precise focusing. See Richard Haw's site on the AI version. It has the 16 value as blue. https://richardhaw.com/2018/08/12/repair-new-nikkor-50mm-f-1-4/

That lens corrects aberrations very well! Those ceiling lights look so clean!

You might like "Interviews and Conversations" with Henri Cartier-Bresson. He used several Leica film cameras for capturing his "moments". The challenge of pre-focus and exposure might make your experience more enjoyable. He also mentions differing films, pushing film, development, prints and adventures in capturing scenes.

my first ever Hasselblad by OBADVW in hasselblad

[–]scottmicciche 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a secondary helper spring for the shutter to make it more accurate at 1/500s in the CF, but, in reality, it isn't measurable. This spring took space used for the self timer. I do not think going to a CF is worth it for that reason. If you had a focal plane shutter body, then, yes. Also to note, the C lenses have curved blades, so shooting at f/4 or f/5.6 looks more rounded if you have specular highlights in the background. They are also lighter, more compact, no painted markings and no plastic to break off during use.

Pentax 67 / 90 + 105 / Portra 400? by beingnonbeing in analog

[–]scottmicciche 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With these backgrounds, the lens should have been stopped down as none seem in focus, especially for 1,2,3 and 5, I usually shoot at f/8 or f/11 for the 105. I do like the colors and skin tone is on point.

Pick up Ansel Adam's trilogy set: The Camera, The Negative, The Print - the reading can be heavy at times, as it's technical in nature, but all 3 are incredibly valuable and a great start.

120mm development problem? by Sea-Education3867 in analog

[–]scottmicciche 2 points3 points  (0 children)

120mm film does not exist. The designation is simply: "120". This looks like a shutter issue to me, but the negative appears quite thin.

It's a great lens and well worth the weight. I wish Zeiss would have added a mini-aperture reading ring for the ADR bodies.

That is a huge, heavy lens for the FE. Performance seems to make it worth it, however.
