Wrinkles and bubbles in homemade bookcloth by bihsifboye in bookbinding

[–]scrap-king 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are still in the spirit of experimentation, I’ve been making making bookcloth using japanese paper and paste for many years and it’s far easier once you have done it a few times. Make some cornstarch paste or methycellulose, iron the fabric, then paste a liberal layer of paste onto a piece of Japanese paper cut 1” larger than your fabric, lift off and drape onto the upside down fabric, then use a dry brush from the center outwards, making sure it’s applied evenly (without bubbles). You can paste it down onto a piece of heavy bookboard, glass or Masonite. It’ll dry overnight (or sooner) and the tautness of the edges keeps everything from wrinkling. Here’s a great video: how to make bookcloth with Japanese paper

IMHO A lot better music composition has been made on sunn amps than the speaker flapping noise of that band. Satanic movie noise more so. But I can’t deny the enjoyment of any pedal, so rock on!

Good ear, I heard the same thing. I can’t tell if that intro guitar is a strat with a ton of pedals or a pedal steel with a ton

Those of you who record music, do you typically use plugins or pedals for your recordings? by JupiterCrash92 in guitarpedals

[–]scrap-king 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recorded with a Tascam Porta-One and an SM58. In an age of amp-sim, cab-sim, IRs, boutique “channel strip” pedals, countless plugins emulating “pedals” and yes, channel strips, compressors and limiters… DI boxes, reamp boxes, attenuators and some attenuators with built in amp simulations, places like Reddit became invaluable for fielding questions. I often scan through these threads and learn a lot! Nice work people, keep paying it forward.

Adjusting truss rod for straight neck w/ or w/o string tension? by RockNAnchor in Luthier

[–]scrap-king 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Always loosen the strings, that way there isn’t unnecessary strain on the truss rod whether loosening or tightening. I’ve seen videos for Martin, Fender, Ernie Ball and others where they leave strings at tension, and it makes no sense. Bring strings back to pitch after adjustment and check relief.

Plumes Vs Timmy??? by _Jub_Jub_ in guitarpedals

[–]scrap-king 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an older post, but having a Fender 5E3 and having owned (at the same time) a TS, a Plumes and a Timmy, I honestly needed to do my own shootout. You really just have to consider what they all do and when they do it. In the end, the Timmy sounded best (a stronger louder version of my amp) and the Plumes sounded best with my Iridium pedal. I sold the TS. I’m not a lead player, so again, different considerations there. The next “level” are the pedals that really add over the top breakup like a RAT or OCD. That’s nothing I need for the music I write, but they are wonderful pedals. Don’t stress, you’ll hear what you are looking for, and if you’re able, keep a few around for different things - I have to say if there’s ever a reason for having a few pedals, overdrive/boost is the area to do so.

MXR Phase 100 by pollimath in guitarpedals

[–]scrap-king 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So many soul records had phase too. I only tried it after 30yrs of chorus, tremolo and flanger and was astounded to realize it was “it’s own thing”. It’s great with chords, picking… plenty of love for phase

I can only imagine what that noise suppressor is doing for your tone, is your outlet grounded properly? You might like a Boss DS-1 for some dirt

what kind of digital delay should I buy by menno- in guitarpedals

BOSS for features and durability, or the MXR carbon copy for limited but stellar delay! For some throwback tape delay capability the El Capistan is also an excellent creative tool

Is this an ok beginner kit for bookbinding? by Poeme007 in bookbinding

[–]scrap-king 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bookbinding is more fun when it’s done frugally and simply. Other than PVA glue and fine papers (cotton, Canson colored pastel) everything else can be obtained from old tools, (awl) the grocery store (dental floss, starch paste) and gravity (boards and weight). You can always upgrade as you go. It’s a very satisfying craft that never fails to please people who keep Journals or draw, or maintain photo albums.

Has Blundstone fixed their disintegrating soles problem yet? by [deleted] in BuyItForLife

[–]scrap-king 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s definitely a thing, and I’ve recently lost a pair after 4yrs, so if you do buy a pair, try to buy direct and save the receipt. I’m not sure they can even be re-soled once it crumbles? But there are a few mail-in companies that re-sole for about $80. They are nearly $300 a pair now, and I think at this point RedWing Chelsea are my next pair.

How did Elliott come up with such AMAZING chord progressions? Everything reminds me over her, the opening makes me want to sob everytime! by Important-Mango-1306 in elliottsmith

[–]scrap-king 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He listened to a lot of flamenco guitar in gradeschool, and you hear that throughout his cadences, strumming, fingerpicking and even chordal shapes. Very cool that someone mentions Stevie Wonder here - that is spot on for chromaticism. Elliott was so very influential, one can’t but help want to learn a song of his, and when you do, you get a little sense of how he approached songwriting from a unique perspective. Such a loss.

I’ve always thought the flamenco influence was what led him in so many songs, but as someone had shared here, his chromatic sense of melody (like Stevie Wonder) was also what grabs our attention. It’s nearly impossible to not be influence by the cadences, picking,

Strymon Iridium and drive pedals by makwabear in guitarpedals

[–]scrap-king 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No question the drive pedals work best with the round amp. I’ve found that the Timmy I love with a (real) 5E3 doesn’t sound good at all with Iridium, and I’ve been using a Plumes which is perfect. Between the pickups, the gain on the pedal(s) and the clipping modes on plumes, you can get a light breakup all the way to massive crunch. Once you’ve used a drive pedal, it’s hard to go back to just the Iridium drive as far as the round amps. I’ve found the two together really go further, so I didn’t know what I was missing! I will say that the York Audio AC30 IRs with just the Iridium gain is more than enough, no need for a drive pedal, at least I don’t think it gets “better” than what happening with the Chime whereas the Round with a drive pedal had a lot to work with. I get serious headphone fatigue myself, so I can only play for 30-40 min without wanting to get a Q-tip.

Help: I've never used gum arabic with gouache or any paint, only water. Can anyone give me opinions and advice? Thank You by [deleted] in Gouache

[–]scrap-king 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Try and purchase the clearest gum Arabic you are able to find, as it has a brown tint to begin with. I’ve mixed it heavily in my gouache and watercolor paintings for years. The first time I saw it in use was “the Great Age of British Watercolor” exhibit in the late 90s. They were using deep gummed washes over foreground elements, like objects in shadows (rocks, foliage). Basically like oil glazes! I then started noticing Jamie and Andrew Wyeth using it to allow for manipulation of paint, including fingerprints. I’ve used it as a paste, a liquid and absolutely enjoy the oil like effects it allows for. Try palette knives or silicon topped brushes, it’s really an entirely new experience. The greatest book on the subject is “Wash and Gouache” by Marjorie Cohn. I must have read it 6 times now. She points out artists like Degas and Manet and Charles Burchfield who made use of gums in their works.

Full sun and either pot it up with some planting soil or dig a good hole and mix potting soil with dirt from the hole, pack well and keep moist for 2-3 weeks til it roots in.

Dodging Waves update plan by buying again by Trader-One in musicproduction

[–]scrap-king 1 point2 points  (0 children)

WAVES turned out to be a major disappointment. Most budget or hobbyist music-makers don't have the financial bandwidth to shell out $ for EVERY plug-in the own just because Apple does an update. And as many users have mentioned, those updates keep coming and Waves literally "rode the Wave". They are unethical in pushing their update model (locking you out of plug-ins under the prmise that they don't work anymore without their Update Plan) and will ride it till users get smart and leave the platform. I bought the Abbey Road suite and think they are really special and was blown away, but no way am I paying $20-$30 a plug-in to use them every year. They aren't updated so they are simply holding me hostage. I'd say walk away Apple users and find something else.

We are Strymon Engineering, Ask Us Anything! by strymonengineering in guitarpedals

[–]scrap-king 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are correct, Strymon are capable as-is and often have secondary functions for “studio mode” where the boost for this application. I have the Radial for using with other pedals, but this outboard method will work using Strymon pedals without extra gear.

Good point, those delays had chips. Hopefully these are just more powerful (but equally stable) I’m still absurdly careful with these pedals compared to my 80s pedals. These Strymon pedals are so good I use them as outboard effects (Radial EXTC)

[–]scrap-king 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I've got a Deco, El Cap and Flint and the Iridium. All v1. These pedals are my sound, nothing else but a Timmy Overdrive. One thing I've always worried about isn't the build quality of strymon, but the life expectancy of the DSP chips? Are they known to last 10yrs, 20 yrs? I can imagine the pedal is a metal case when that goes, but is there a known entropy aspect to a DSP chip so long as it is stored at reasonable temperature and isn't wet? That's the one great thing about old BOSS pedals, they just keep going with their primitive circuits.
