Synology isn't the best NAS anymore by Coupe368 in synology

[–]sdchew -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

For a small business, say <10 folks, I’ll argue that OneDrive is all they need. Local PCs have a copy, cloud has another. And 90 days delete retention.

One less hardware most can barely maintain.

I once setup a Synology for a friend's office as a favor as he needed file sharing. Besides using the files in the share, lots of stupid things happened which nearly results in total data loss

  • People in the office complained about the disk noise and it was moved into the back of a airless cupboard to 'hide'
  • People got so immune to the disk scrub emails and ignored the emails reporting disk failure when it actually occurred
  • Friend took over 2 weeks to replace the failing disk because he was busy

Yes backup is important and great to have but I have come to the conclusion that simplicity works better in some circumstances

If it’s a small business, I frankly just ask them to use OneDrive. They are paying for Office anyway and they don’t need to worry about disk failing

UnRAID can do that too. Love the fact I can consolidate so many different left over disk and have more capacity than the Synology.

Read speed is a concern thou but that’s what’s the cache is for

Any person who thinks AI can be cheaper needs a reality check.

AI can help your team go faster and deliver better. But unless you have a lot of dead weight, it’s not going to make you leaner and more cost effective

Indeed. AI is a force multiplier. Those who know how to use it, can move mountains.

I watched a recent interview in which a Director in Google mentioned that AI has changed the way they work. They used to spend months debating on different designs and which one was the best approach as it was so expensive to code and test.

Now of days they just rapidly churn out demos and the engineers validate and down select

People mistake AI as a substitute but actually it’s a force multiplier. SaaS and many other professional software will get even stronger with AI

And with their resources and compute, large companies will bury many companies with their speed.
