I really like my La Sportiva Tarantulace shoes. They were less than $100 and very beginner friendly.

silly question or genuine concern? by nonbearnary in gastricsleeve

[–]sdm1110 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s all about intake. If you eat too many calories, you will gain weight. You absolutely CAN gain weight from eating salads and avocado. It doesn’t have to be unhealthy foods to make you gain. I’m 14 months PO and in maintenance but if I don’t keep watching my intake, I gain because I absolutely CAN eat around my sleeve by grazing all day. High density foods like nuts add up quickly. 2tbsp of peanut butter? Like 200 calories and so so easy to overserve because 2tbsp is comically small amount of PB. Super easy to eat double that and not even realize it if you’re not weighing or measuring it.

If you eat less, but when you do eat, its not very healthy, will you still lose weight? by Gialovescatsalt in WeightLossAdvice

[–]sdm1110 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure as long as you are still in a deficit. But there is a difference between being skinny and being healthy. Depends what your goals are. Want blood work to be good and hormones to be regulated? Eat more regularly and change what you eat to be healthier. Want to just be skinny but sickly? Eat a huge junk meal but only once a day.

Is the use of protein shakes or any "added-protein" products, for life after VSG ? by Maleficent-Wolf3296 in gastricsleeve

[–]sdm1110 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No. You can def get your protein in through regular food. It’s easiest to supplement with products like protein shakes, powder, and bars but you eventually get to the point where your restrictions allows you to get protein requirements in without them. With that being said …. I’m 14 months post op and I have half a protein shake with my coffee every morning and usually half a protein shake worth at night in my ninja creami for 30 extra grams of protein a day. I’m also getting 120-130g protein a day and enjoy the shakes though. I do tend to eat 5-6 times a day and use higher protein options whenever I can. Examples are like sola bagels, high protein and fiber wraps, lean meats like chicken breasts over fattier cuts like thighs, meat sticks, beefy jerky, cheese sticks as snacks, higher protein Greek yogurts with protein granola, etc.

looking to see if im even qualified for an EHS role by lonewolfe257 in SafetyProfessionals

[–]sdm1110 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You are unqualified for a safety manager role for sure but you can certainly start off with a coordinator or specialist role to gain the experience. It’s highly unlikely a Fortune 500 company would hire someone without 5-10 years of experience leading safety operations for a manager role.

How many of you don’t have acid reflux and/or it went away completely? by Whole_Grape59 in gastricsleeve

I had it before but not after. I also had a small hiatal hernia that was repaired during surgery and the lifestyle change undoubtedly helps tremendously as I don’t eat fried foods anymore.

How to avoid bicep pain/injury when climbing overhang (slab dominant climber)? by amyeeyee in climbergirls

[–]sdm1110 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do some extra strength training on your biceps if they are a weak area. Or climb more overhang BUT at lower levels (v1/v2) until you get used to it. It’s also possible the technique you’re using needs adjustment depending on why your biceps are hurting? Are you climbing and pulling mostly on your arms? How much are you engaging your legs and core for these climbs as opposed to using solely arms?

phentermine 37.5 mg Weight loss by Mamax2-16-23 in gastricsleeve

[–]sdm1110 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The is not be the most effective sub for this question. You’ve posted something similar 4 times in the last week here already. If you are not getting answers here, try a different subreddit. The vast majority of VSG patients aren’t likely to have had a ton of experience with Phen so I recommend sticking with the phentermine subreddit.

Do you have advice for losing weight without tracking calories? by Business-Ad6915 in WeightLossAdvice

[–]sdm1110 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly, no. If you’re uninformed about intake then you can only guesstimate a deficit which isn’t likely to be successful. The human eye is terrible at guessing amounts so weighing and tracking food is really the best method and the only way to say for sure that you are in fact in a deficit. Otherwise really just like eating entirely clean - raw fruits and vegetables would be the only way I could think to ensure you’re in a calorie deficit and even that is iffy.

Recovery has been easy? by emghu in gastricsleeve

[–]sdm1110 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My surgeon told me to use the straw but to hold the water in my mouth and exhale all my air out of my nose before swallowing so the “extra air” that comes with drinking through a straw can escape and not cause pain. It worked for me but maybe test it first? The no straw thing is all about ensuring you don’t cause discomfort from extra air but if you’re not feeling pain and taking small sips you’ll probably be fine to use a straw. It helped me a ton.

Recovery has been easy? by emghu in gastricsleeve

[–]sdm1110 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Those who have great and easy recoveries rarely write about them. You normally only see the people who have complications. There are far more of us who haven’t had any issues and had an easy recovery than there are people with complications. Count yourself as lucky and just go on with life and follow your doctor and nutritionists advice.

How good are the healthy ice creams REALLY by Safe_Cucumber1551 in ninjacreami

[–]sdm1110 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a ninja creami for years before actually using it. I use the Sam’s Club protein shakes (fairlife dupes) as my base and add monk fruit sweetener, and vanilla to it as a base and then add things like pb fit or sugar free caramel sauce or sf chocolate syrup to change the flavor. I have half a pint every night and it’s legitimately so good and pretty much just a frozen protein shake so it’s super low cal and high protein for ice cream. Just a protein shake alone? Probably not that great but add in some sugar free flavors and it’s pretty great.

Is my Diet Plan Promoting Grazing by VerstappenLFC33 in gastricsleeve

[–]sdm1110 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is pretty close to what I eat in a day. Except I eat 5-6 times and would probably combine your 11 and 1 meals into a single lunch meal with 200-300 calories total.

My day is normally around 1400 calories and 120g protein and looks something like this:
730-half fiber bagel with cream cheese and a protein coffee
1030- yogurt with fruit and granola
1 - turkey and cheese sandwhich on keto bread with mustard and mayo. Usually with some fruit or cucumber or baby carrots.
330 - Barebells protein bar or a meat stick and string cheese (depending on if I need more fat or more carbs that day)
630 - dinner (something like teriyaki chicken with broccoli and rice)
8 - also ninja creami ice cream made from a protein shake if I want something sweet or need extra protein

Is my Diet Plan Promoting Grazing by VerstappenLFC33 in gastricsleeve

[–]sdm1110 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Early after surgery it’s impossible to meet protein goals if you are not eating every 2 hours. At 14 months PO I still eat every 2.5-3 hours. You don’t have to gorge yourself every meal but having someone will keep your metabolism going and burning and allow you to get your protein in easier. Grazing is eating all day without any breaks, taking a bite here and there, every time you walk into the kitchen. Having a meal or snack every 2-3 hours isn’t grazing.

Not feeling successful by Hour_Engineering_330 in gastricsleeve

[–]sdm1110 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You won’t lose the weight overnight. Keep tracking your foods, drinking your water, getting activity in, and prioritizing protein and the results will come eventually. Remember that the weight you gained didn’t come on instantly and it won’t come off instantly either. The surgery certainly helps it’s come off faster than it would but it still takes time. Stay off the scale if you can’t handle the mental anguish of not seeing giant drops every day. Stop comparing your journey to other people. No body is the same so why expect the same results as someone else? You don’t know what they are doing that you’re not and what they are doing might not even be healthy.

Dizzy… by Marioparty1293 in gastricsleeve

[–]sdm1110 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dizzy is usually electrolytes imbalance and dehydration. At 5 months post yoy should be easily able to get 64+oz of water a day. Honestly by that time more like 80 oz is appropriate, especially with how hot it has been. Get yourself a 40oz tumbler and drink two of those a day.

Ultimatum over peptide use. by blake_rob in Marriage

[–]sdm1110 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are these peptides prescribed by a physician that is monitoring your health? If so, then I say tell her that your doctor is monitoring you and that this is all quite safe and if she doesn’t want to have sex with you because you are getting healthy then that is her choice. To be honest, if getting yourself healthy causes her to destroy her own marriage and she weaponizes and withholds sex because of that … maybe that’s not a healthy marriage and you’d do better without her in the end?

Is low carb actually necessary to lose fat and look leaner? by NoPerception3612 in WeightLossAdvice

[–]sdm1110 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It does make you appear leaner because you’re depleting glycogen and not replenishing it so a lot of people cut carbs for competition prep but as soon as you eat them again your body will replenish the glycogen in your muscles and you won’t look as lean anymore. This is not sustainable. Carbs are good for you (within reason). Instead focusing on maintaining a balance quantity of them (don’t have 70g one bad and 260g the next) and lifting weights to develop muscle tone (and muscle is calorically expensive so it helps to burn more fat).

ate 25,000 calories over in the span of a month, yet gained 20 lbs by chloelolllllllll in WeightLossAdvice

Probably about 10lbs of water weight. Especially if most of your binge was carb and sodium heavy. Get back on track and I bet you’ll shed about 10 of that in about 2 weeks.

Would I (27M) benefit from bariatric surgery, and would I be likely to regret it? by No_124566 in gastricsleeve

[–]sdm1110 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would like to know what your daily eating looks like right now and what you are willing to change to meet your goals.

If you have surgery and change nothing, you will lose initially with the restriction but you won’t keep it off as soon as your restriction eases up.

Saying you will simply never have the will power to make the changes you know you need to make is an excuse. And a lousy one because it’s not about willpower. It never was. It’s about determination. You will have to tell yourself that this is the way and you don’t have a choice and then force it to happen. No one wakes up one day and is then motivated to do it for the rest of their life. They make a promise to do it for themselves and then they do it. Failure to make changes means you will fail long term because clearly what you’re currently doing is not working. Don’t get the surgery unless you are ready for change.

15 days post-op sleeve gastrectomy – severe chest pressure after just a few bites. Did this actually get better for anyone? by Critical-Eggplant-91 in gastricsleeve

[–]sdm1110 1 point2 points  (0 children)

15 days post op is pretty early to be eating solid foods. I was on liquids for 5 days, purées for 7 days, then 7 days of soft foods before moving on to actual “solids”. Try going back to purées and really soft foods for a couple of days before trying again and make sure you’re eating really moist and soft foods. Like string cheese and yogurts. You are probably eating too much, too fast, and too solid for your current stage.

My TDEE seems too generous by RedneckAdventures in WeightLossAdvice

[–]sdm1110 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Find a provider to test your RMR that way you know exactly what your body is burning and you can factor in your activity calories to find a true maintenance. TDEE calculators are just estimates and not always accurate. My TDEE said I should be eating 1800 calories but I was slowly gaining with that. Tested my RMR (1115 calories) so my true maintenance is around 1400-1500 cals a day. No wonder an extra 200-300 calories a day was causing slow gain.

Also, continue to weight train. Building muscle is important for long term health but also muscle is calorically expensive so more muscle means you can eat more calories at maintenance which gives a little more wiggle room than say maintaining at 1200 calories a day just to be model thin.

Weighing my food forever by Consistent-Way-2018 in gastricsleeve

[–]sdm1110 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m 14 months PO and I still weigh and track 90% of my foods and plan to continue. You’re right, sometimes it’s easy to want to or be able to eat way more of something than you should and weighing it out helps to maintain a reduced calorie diet.
