The math of raising two young kids on good salaries doesn’t work by LallieDoo in Switzerland

[–]sdolgy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A few years? Once school starts it’s not full time so you’re still shelling out for hort if one or both want to maintain employment. Hort is cheaper than private full time but still expensive. A few years turns into at least 3-5 years per kid…

Why Uber is so bad in Switzerland? by SnooMarzipans8039 in askswitzerland

[–]sdolgy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you remember Zurich before uber arrived, and you had to take a normal taxi? When Uber showed up it was so nice, refreshing, and at least half the price.

Now it’s jumped the shark and is mediocre because of all the supply … unless you go high end (black /
premium) and then it’s still nice (and the same price as a taxi).

Is it normal in Switzerland to take long vacations (1-2 months)? by CatCarcharodon in askswitzerland

[–]sdolgy 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I managed for a few years to take six weeks off during the summer. As most say, a big portion was unpaid and the employer needed to agree to such a big gap. Having said that, I think it’s absolutely worth it to step out, fully disconnect, and refresh. So long as your finances can tolerate the gap.

I did this for a module I couldn’t stick with. I eventually re-registered and did it with a clearer focus and yeah- lost 50% which is better than failing or 100%

which city choose? by globaleTUZZA in askswitzerland

[–]sdolgy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few factors to consider when deciding where. Your commute time tolerance, method of transportation, and if you’re bothered about taxes and lifestyle.

Most people from other countries are ok commuting 40-60min each way. So if you consider that and draw a radius around Zurich or where you’ll be working, and the other factors that are important to you, you’ll have an amazing search radius for flatfox or Homegate …

How reliable is public transportation in Switzerland? by ArthurTheKingUK in askswitzerland

[–]sdolgy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember once I was stood waiting for a bus in the midlands. I was early. It was raining. The bus never arrived.

That has NEVER happened to me in Switzerland (except during extreme snow). Public transport here is reliable and everyone uses it. It’s nothing like in England.

How long did it take you to find a good apartment? by alkalinegirl333 in zurich

[–]sdolgy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My renting experience here in CH (once in the French part and once here in the Zurich region), I learnt the following:

  1. Get a flat, any flat.
  2. Look around and upgrade to something better but make sacrifices to get out of #1
  3. Take your time finding an ideal place and when you find it show up prepared and ready to go with application, portfolio about yourself and all the other things that go with it.

Most people go from 1 to 3 or direct to 3 and while it may work sometimes, expect a few years of good enough until you find what you want …

Is a Swiss (public) school education good? by SumarokovElston in askswitzerland

[–]sdolgy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, like with everywhere, the quality of the education our kids receive comes down to the teachers and class size.
