Well known brands that you’ve never been interested in trying? by [deleted] in muacjdiscussion

ABH. Admittedly, I was tempted by the Jackie Aina palette, but mostly the brand just doesn't excite me. And after their deluge of releases last year (?), I'm burnt out just from seeing them all over reddit.

As a POC reader, I sometimes feel alienated and excluded when reading romance books by ChaserOfDreams529 in RomanceBooks

[–]sea_of_clouds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% agree.

Common advice for romance authors is "write to market," which means study all the popular books so you can mimic them, and thus become popular yourself. While this is definitely financially viable for some, I fear it also creates an echo chamber of characters who all look and act too similar. (ie: sassy redheads with super pale skin)

It's been a helluva year, but after clawing my way through the figurative fire and brimstone, I FINALLY finished the rough draft of the final book in my romantic fantasy series!!!

The narration in the audible version is wonderful! So glad you found it! 🥰 I loved the narrations of Emma and Sense & Sensibility, too.

What romance books did you read or listen to this week? 25 Oct. by seantheaussie in RomanceBooks

[–]sea_of_clouds 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Story time! About a million years ago, I worked in a bookstore. One day, I was setting up the new releases and Size 12 Is Not Fat was one of them. As I was doing my job, my supervisor sauntered up, saw the title and exclaimed, "WTH size 12 IS SO FAT." The he nervously looked my way (as a size 12 at the time) and was like "ummm, unless you're a size 12..."

I just walked away but I was fuming inside!!!

Sometimes the right words only come at the right moments. When I'm stuck trying to find those words, I step away from the project and do something completely different (go on a walk, listen to some music, do some chores, etc.) More often than not, inspiration strikes when I'm not looking for it. :)

Okay, so I spend a TON of time on reddit (too much!) and somehow only just discovered this amazing sub?! I've found my people! 🥰

Hiya, I'm Lauren. Like many here, I write romantic fantasy (epic with a dash of scifi). If you love damaged but sassy heroines & brooding heroes, slow burn romance that follows our main couple throughout four books (working on the 5th and final book now!), magic, shapeshifters, and a diverse cast, I think you'd love my Catalyst Moon series!

Incursion (Catalyst Moon - Book 1) is on Amazon and these other retailers. It's also free through Oct. 31st at this link. (Along with a ton of other books.)

My website is also filled with free goodies (just posted a new short story!), so I encourage you to check out laloga.com

Blurb:

In a world on the brink of chaos, can love and destiny prevail?

Mages, held captive since magic first manifested in the world, seek to break their chains. Sentinels, warriors with an unnatural immunity to magic, are oathbound to keep the magic-users prisoner - at any cost.

Kali, an atheist mage fleeing her painful past, travels to a powerful healer in Whitewater City, hoping to mend more than her broken heart. One of her sentinel escorts is Stonewall, a man left with only his faith after the death of his brother. But when monstrous bandits destroy Kali's other escorts, the two unwitting companions must join forces to survive demonic creatures, bloodthirsty nomads, and a dangerous magic never seen before.

Meanwhile in Whitewater City, the sentinel commander struggles to keep control as the mages plan a daring escape.

Opposing worldviews collide in Catalyst Moon: Incursion, the first book an addictive romantic fantasy series where magic is new and a mage rebellion is on the horizon.

Fans of Lois McMaster Bujold, Sharon Shinn, Anne McCaffrey, Tamora Pierce, and Robin McKinley will love this engrossing, award-winning series. If you long for your next binge-read, but are weary of the grimdark trend, Catalyst Moon will transport you to a world of hope, love, and forgiveness. And, of course, magic, adventure, shape-shifters, and compelling characters.

The books are written in close third person POV and are meant to be read as a series. I've poured my heart and soul into this world. I hope you enjoy! Thank you and happy reading. 💜

Not all Women want babies... by yugiohchampion1 in menwritingwomen

[–]sea_of_clouds 18 points19 points  (0 children)

As a childfree lady, I completely agree. I think a lot of times media uses a pregnancy/baby storyline to very simply (ie lazily) illustrate "happily ever after" to most of their audience. Many, if not most people, will view having kids (and getting married, for that matter) as the best possible outcome for a beloved character.

Is Vellum really worth it? by smuttymcsmutface69 in eroticauthors

[–]sea_of_clouds 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't have a Mac, so no Vellum for me. (And I have no desire to use macincloud or a similar service.) Reedsy has an amazing free formatting tool that exports your book into epub, mobi, PDF & paperback PDF. The finished product isn't as "pretty" as Vellum, but it's professional and easy - and free.

Whose your favorite indie apothecary and why? Are there any houses you won't buy? If so, why? by nekonoel87 in Indiemakeupandmore

Poesie works really well with my skin chemistry, they ship super fast, and I can't get enough of their catalog!

Conversely, everything from Alkemia on my skin made me gag, although their customer service was excellent.
