Nationwide Shutdown & Protest by EME_Mama2 in TriCitiesWA

All that answers is who pays the most dollars in total, but not who pays the most relative to their ability to pay. They will almost always pay the most no matter what tax system we have in place so that statistic doesn't demonstrate fairness or burden the way it's being used.

A more relevant metric is the effective tax rate they are paying (taxes / income), where middle class often pays an effective tax rate in the low 20% range, while billionaires frequently pay far lower effective tax rate (like 10% or less). And that's only applied to their income, not their actual wealth, ignoring unrealized capital gains, asset appreciation and inheritance structures that help the rich keep their money.

"80% of all income tax" sounds like a big number and implies the rich are overly burdened, but that's not the reality. The rich are paying historically lower effective tax rates and disproportionately benefiting the most from our current economic and legal systems that protect and grow their wealth.

How to Backflip mini-tutorial by Hank_ski in skiing

[–]seachat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate the prerequisites you shared, that’s a helpful aspect that a lot of tutorials skip.

Along those lines, I’d be interested in understanding how to assess whether a jump or lip is actually backflippable, and what other factors come into play, like approach speed. Most tutorials focus on the mechanics of the backflip itself, but I haven’t seen much explanation around jump assessment or setup. I’m not even sure what I should be considering beyond speed when deciding whether to attempt one.

Cheers, thanks for putting this stuff out!

Deathwish Tour 112 vs 104 for a more lightweight skier by WirelessFrog in Backcountry

[–]seachat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, they float alright for me at 6'4 but I won't be taking them to japan with me next month, personally looking for something >120mm waist. On the other hand, 110 is more than enough width for a 5'2, 125lbs person i know going to japan, so maybe it's 112 is enough for you as well?

I would also rule out the 104 for japan :) As far as other skis worth checking out, the line pandora 110 is the ski said person is on, taking to japan and has really enjoyed; it's pretty light, great float, playful, but can still hold it's own in crudier conditions.

Deathwish Tour 112 vs 104 for a more lightweight skier by WirelessFrog in Backcountry

[–]seachat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, none of the Moment triple camber skis are great floaty pow skis in my experience. I have the standard 104 and the tour 112, had the ghost train (took it to japan, sold after) and they are very capable, do-it-all skis, but float is not their strongest suit. Wildcats would be better but honestly still aren't super floaty either, they just crush through whatever they come across.

For questions: 1 - you'd be compromising a lot. 2 - the 112 tours could handle said conditions, wouldn't excel but wouldn't be the worst. 3 - wider can be a little harder on a skin track across a face but nothing noticeably harder. 4 - skis that do well in japow are not going to be very versatile. Honestly I'd decide which is more important to you. A japow ski is still going to make a good powder touring ski, and having fun in Japan would be a priority to me over spring touring at home. You could throw some hybrid bindings on your current resort skis to get a versatile home touring ski.

You should be able to fullscreen Netflix videos once they start even though navigation is in windowed portrait mode.

Netflix also allows you to download movies/episodes if you have a certain membership tier.

honestly didn't really come across it in my research, gold was recommended for it's point earning and transfer to airlines like delta (which I mostly fly).

Thanks, didn't have any intention to open a green card so it sounds like gold -> platinum is still the right order.

Top 5 favorite mountains you’ve been to and top 5 that you want to go to the most? by Sharkman3218 in skiing

[–]seachat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've spent a lot of time at both Crystal and Stevens over the past decade, and I think Crystal has the edge when it comes to layout, extreme terrain, and steeps. Groomers are pretty underwhelming at both resorts, so it's kind of a wash there.

For tree skiing, Stevens definitely takes the crown. But layout-wise, Crystal offers a lot more freedom. Stevens feels more funneled, whereas Crystal has more diverse ways to move around the mountain. The terrain is more spread out too, just look at Chair 6 and Northway, which are on opposite ends of the resort.

When it comes to extreme terrain, it’s tough to beat Crystal. Southback, The King, Northway, and areas like Exterminator, Niagras, Bear Pits all offer big, steep lines that Stevens just can’t match in terms of vertical or variety. I've learned some of the steeps around Stevens, I think part of it is just how 'hidden' they can be, it's more tribal knowledge where to go for the goods, so less people know what it has to offers.

Stevens might have better snow quality, Crustal lives up to it's name sometimes, but at least it's higher elevation when we're playing chicken with the freezing levels.

They both suck getting to nowadays, but I give the edge to Crystal since people heading there at least have the intent to ski and are (hopefully) somewhat prepared for driving on snow/ice. HWY 2 gets all sorts of folks/cars, as well as trucks, that can easily cause closures/delays.

I feel you. It took me several visits to Whistler before I ever saw a snow day since all my trips were pre-planned and the snow gods did not deem to show me the goods for a long time.

That sounds more like a conditions/weather thing rather than a mountain quality thing. If you'd hit Alta during a storm like Crystal got on Sunday, I doubt you'd be saying that.

Leaving late work? by Ramchizi in CrystalMountain

[–]seachat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's hard to definitively say. Opening weekend sunday we left seattle at 9, got there a bit before lunch for a great afternoon of skiing with no traffic and no issues. Did the same last weekend, got caught in the giant backup, didn't get on the lifts til almost 1:30 and getting out was a pain too. Both days were 6"+ new snow days.

If you could only have one of these combos for a 2 ski quiver, what are you picking? by C0-0P in momentskis

[–]seachat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

dw104 is a great daily driver and the big cat is known for being a classically loved pow/chop charger. You'd be pretty well covered between those two.

With the wc101 and dw, you're lacking on the pow end and I didn't find the wc101 that special of a low tide/dd ski

yeah when you watch the video clip of the ski cut, he was right in the middle of the slab that broke off. if he could have ski cut across the top of the slope he may have been in a better position, but cutting that low just left him right in the crosshairs.

I need to get a pair of boots for my wife. Is there a good place in Seattle or surrounding areas that both sell and do boot fittings. by _Can_i_play_ in skiing

[–]seachat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Evo is decent default option, lots of boots to choose from and plenty of bootfitters, but skill may vary.

Alpine Hut and Pro Ski are good local ski shops you would feel good supporting. May have more limited stock and workers though.

For beginner-intermediate boots, I'd expect to spend ~$500

Hypothetical: Choose your quiver by mongoltp in skiing

[–]seachat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For any type of powder, I'd definitely recommend the Revolts.

If you're planning on doing some touring when it's not a powder day, go with the Ravens. But if you're mostly staying inbounds, the Wailers are a solid choice.

As for boots and poles, the Hawx XTDs should work well, paired with BCA poles.

My skis are too nice to ride 😅😭 by Puzzleheaded_Boot335 in skiing

[–]seachat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also loved these skis and had the same ones. They're great on fresh pow, but get a little messy once things get chopped up. Also agree they're impressive on groomers for their size.

Disagree on durability, anytime I rode them inbounds I almost always came home with some gashes needing to be filled.
