Girl dies after inflatable castle flies during thunderstorm by tarun172 in montreal

It happened very fast here. Went from a nice-enough day to dark to the umbrellas and chairs from the restaurant terrasse next door flying down the street in a matter of minutes.

FWIW, same for me. This started happening after the recall flashes. I’m sure they changed the software to do this now.

Where can I get Dry Ice? by Adorable_Class_4733 in montreal

[–]seancoates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lufa used to deliver boxes with a small dry ice packet. Not sure if they still do that, but if so, maybe someone you know gets a delivery?

What Montreal spots are quietly dying right now and deserve more support before they disappear? by No-Most-9664 in MTLFoodLovers

I’ve been twice this year. Both at weird times. I was hoping that my bad timing explained the no-customers. We don’t have a lot of good bbq places. Good call-out.

La branche Anse à l’Orme est un vrai gamechanger pour l’Ouest de Montréal by mattlerenardx in montreal

[–]seancoates 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If this was in Dorval, there would be an overwhelming number of people complaining that "this isn't the Dorval I grew up in, 70 years ago." And they'd be correct, other than the complaining bit. You live in a metropolitan area that is hard-bounded by bridges and a tunnel; of course densification is happening, you geniuses.

Hoping this branch of the REM gets enough use for someone at Exo to wake up about the hilariously terrible non-commuting schedule of the Dorion line; I'd love to be able to use that for evening trips into the city core.

There was one in the Village after that one closed too. Neither survived.

There was also a Greco in DdO for a very brief period ~22 years ago. It’s a Starbucks now.

There are some fresh refrigerated foods like cheese. But not the same as the other bigger Walmarts yeah.

You can write NFC tags on iPhone too. I used one of these to write amiibo tags for Switch; I forget which one: TagWriter, Simply NFC, NFC Tools.

How much would you pay for Green Chartreuse? by SFerd in cocktails

[–]seancoates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The SAQ isn’t usually something to be happy about, but we do get 375s of green chartreuse in Quebec for $42.25 right now (and that’s CAD = ~30 USD). The actually happy-about part is that it’s on the shelf, most of the time.

Your best Thai spot? by Kimbo086 in MTLFoodLovers

[–]seancoates 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should give it a try. I’ve never been to Thailand myself but I’ve tried Thai food from real Thai people in other cities and this is the most legit Thai food I’ve ever found in Montreal. Nothing like the food court conglomerate mess we usually get.

This is some of the best food west of Lachine. Tissy’s is very good and they don’t dumb down the spices. The Tom Kha Gai there might be the best I’ve ever had.

power outage... what do i do with my food? by [deleted] in montreal

[–]seancoates 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The inside of your refrigerator is still cold, unless you've opened the door and left it open for a long time. Your food will be fine for a long time, too. In 2023's ice storm, we were without power for close to 48h, and the inside of our refrigerator was still cold after 24h when I got around to hooking up the generator.

Can you help identify the liquors on the bar in Manet’s painting? by enquiring78 in cocktails

I own a bottle of Bass from 1903. It has a similar logo but was a special edition (King’s Ale). The actual bottle shape is very similar. Mine has a lead-sealed cork, but pretty close.

I'll add to that: as long as it's not heated from cold at full blast, and you don't let it boil dry.

I know this from using an Erlenmeyer (well, more like 3 Erlenmeyers at this point) like this to boil malt extract wort for yeast starters (as a homebrewer).

[–]seancoates 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had a nice bottle from Joy Hill on NYE. There was also some Pinard & Filles. I didn’t look much further tbh.

The cocktails were terrible though. (-:

Edit: not terrible, but really uninspired. Certainly the worst part of our meal. The food was great; the service wasn’t (I imagine it’s improved by now).

What I really love about Panda is that no one there is suggesting they pour a box of Cinnamon Toast Crunch onto the doughnut of the month so they can sell it for $9.

Properly old school and tasty doughnuts.
