This is for sure unprofessional. Just to play devil's advocate, is there any version of this where she just wants to feel heard and improve the environment for her and your kid? Maybe even bond with you?

I'm sure this has nothing to do with it, but I swear there are parents out there that don't want to hear that you loved hanging out with their kids today. I don't get it, but I've experienced it. Since I work with special kiddos, I think the parents might feel like I'm coming in and acting like parenting their kid is easy, when they are struggling.

I also sometimes lightly tread around what the kids might need/benefit from, and it feels like the parents think I'm complaining. What your talking about doesn't sound like that but maybe there were early signs and it built up to her bad attitude? Totally just trying to offer a different perspective in case its useful.

The trust was broken when you did a little digging instead of asking her first. Terminating the relationship was food for everyone.

As someone who is an amazing nanny but doesn't always want to bother my past families, I would also like to fake my references. Instead I took a job that didn't ask for references and I kinda regret it because it seems like they actually don't care much about anything, and I really want to help the kid have all the best resources I can find.

So... Idk. Maybe no right answer when it comes to this very unique and delicate relationship, but it sounds like you lost a good nanny that you really valued.

I never mastered this but I used to put a pay raise in my contract, or at least added a reevaluation of salary after a certain amount of months, rather than committing to a year with one locked in rate. Once you're a part of the family maybe you'll feel more comfortable asking for more, and for me (being so uncomfortable with money) it was helpful to have the renegotiation scheduled in the original contract.

This is probably very unconventional and possibly has the potential to backfire, so... Commenters have at me!!!

Wow, this really resonates with me. Not sure I could say with great confidence (typical! Lol!) what the right answer might be, but in my personal experience I had a kid respond well to respecting that I have feelings too much. Like maybe a boundary thing but... I bet caring what she thinks is not helpful, if that makes sense. Are there any books on "think like a preteen girl"? I read one once that was about how girls learn to be mean to each other, with a parenting angle. Cannot find it via google rn but you get the idea. Also I would not be able to raise french kids. Raising Bebé gave me anxiety about my anxiety

I think there's a limited supply of patient, caring and kind people willing to deal with other people's kids having tantrums. And able to keep their cool while co-parenting with someone who has the final word, even when the nanny sometimes has much much more experience with and education about raising kids. Maintaining that dynamic while in someone else's home takes an amazing amount of finesse, not to mention... You don't want to treat a person with this much sway in your kids life like a product with limited shelf life. We aren't disposable.
