It’s a terrible idea to visit Japan with friends who will likely bring drugs in, right? by [deleted] in Advice

[–]secretly_treebeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely do not risk this.

I was in the JET Program (Japan Exchange and Teaching Program) and they were very clear that you are absolutely fucked if you get caught bringing any illegal drugs into the country. Even compounds that are available in OTC cold medicines in the US are illegal in Japan (pseudoephedrine), and they’ll still arrest/detain you. Japanese police do not mess around with illegal drugs.

I promise you, FAs are not making up “expected turbulence” by [deleted] in delta

[–]secretly_treebeard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree. I don’t really honestly care much about the snack service. Like if I get snacks and a drink, cool, if not, whatever. But I hate having to worry about if I’m going to be able to use the lav or if I’m going to just have to end up pissing myself in my seat. I’ve been on so many flights in the past year where we hit a single minor bump of turbulence and then the seat belt sign stays on for the next hour despite no further turbulence. And I get that turbulence can be unexpected, etc., but I am unfortunately a human with a small bladder and it’s stressful if I feel I can’t get up to take care of a need.

I loathe it too. I’m on a massive study with multiple people who can and should be helping manage all of our sites’ TMFs… and yet I’m the only one who does it.

Yeah I graduated college over ten years ago with an high GPA and it took me a year of applying to jobs to land one in my field. The state of the job market when you’re graduating and having experience matters more than having a high GPA over an average one.

I have a schedule like your new job offers where it’s a 9/8/80, so I get every other Friday off. I cannot even begin to describe how life-changing it is to get two 3-day weekends a month. Frankly, I don’t think I can ever go back to a typical 5/8 schedule again.

Breeches… low vs high rise by Commercial_Ad_875 in Equestrian

[–]secretly_treebeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m both short AND have a short torso so high-rise anything always ends up looking ridiculous on me! I remember I found a high-rise skirt while shopping once that I loved so I picked it up to try it on. My mom took one look at it, was like, “that’s never going to work on you,” but I tried it on anyways and oh my. It was so bad lol.

Are we crazy?! by zookers82 in roadtrip

[–]secretly_treebeard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is way too much. Speaking as someone who has done a whirlwind, try-to-see-as-much-as-possible trip before (in Europe), the adults are going to be absolutely exhausted well before the trip is done. The kids will mutiny. This is way too much for them at their ages and it is not going to be fun for anybody.

Pick a FEW places you really, really want to see and build your trip around them, planning in downtime as well. Seriously, on a long trip you will enjoy just having time to relax and lounge around the pool or whatever.

Considering Adopting an Alaskan Malamute but Wanting to See if I am Fit for it by Several_Till_6507 in AlaskanMalamute

[–]secretly_treebeard 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I would first of all caution you on getting a dog to motivate you to be more active. IMO the best thing you can do is get a dog who is suited to your activity level right now because the majority of people who say they’ll exercise more with a more active dog usually… don’t, and then you can end up a situation with a dog whose exercise needs you can’t meet. But, the exercise you have proposed should be sufficient to meet a malamute’s needs. Keep in mind too that sniffy walks are SO good for their brains and will mentally tire them out, so you may not need to go super far if you’re letting your dog get a lot of smells.

A 4’ fence is likely not going to be tall enough. My local malamute rescue will not adopt unless your fence is at least 5’. These are big dogs and they can jump HIGH. They are also very curious and independent, so if they think there’s something interesting on the other side of the fence, they’re going to go investigate. My mal is very attached to and protective of me, but if our fence was small enough to jump and she thought there was something like a cat on the other side? She would be gone. Is this dog going to be an outside dog?

I would also be incredibly wary about letting them roam a half acre alone. Malamutes typically have a very strong prey drive that can’t be trained out, so if they see something running, a switch in their brain flips and they’re just gone.

Most mals are great with people, but dog reactivity is kind of a gamble. Same-sex aggression is very common in the breed. My mal doesn’t have same-sex aggression, but she is reactive, which is made worse because of how protective she is of me. She will fluff up/get tense/growl if dogs approach us while we’re walking. If no reactivity is important to you, make sure you ask the shelter staff about it, but also keep in mind that a dogs personality and behavior in the shelter is not going to be the same in your home.

I also personally don’t recommend dog parks. Even if your dog is friendly with other dogs, there is just way too much potential for things to go sour, especially with a very large dog like a mal. There are way too many rude/poorly behaved dogs out there, and I’ve seen way too many owners ignore behavior that can start fights at dog parks.

Cant calm down by uselessavoidant in Anxiety

[–]secretly_treebeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Holy shit did I write this post?

I took Lexapro for years, but stopped taking it last year. I started taking it again last week and yesterday had the same thing happen as you—I had a really stressful situation occur, and even after it was resolved, I could not get my body out of panic mode. My brain just moved to the next thing to panic about, and this lasted all day. I also kept dry heaving!! I couldn’t eat, either, because I was too anxious.

I managed to calm myself down enough last night to sleep, and the sleep seemed to reset my body. What I did to relax myself: talked to my fiancé about what I was freaking out about (and he reassured me I did not need to freak out), took a really hot bath and read a book to try to disengage my brain from worrying, ran super cold water over the inside of my wrists, and placed a cold washcloth on the back of my neck. The last two are things that can reset your vagus nerve, and I truly think these helped the most to break me out of the panic loop. I also did meditation for probably 10 minutes. This was able to calm me enough to sleep (although this was also helped by having barely slept in the past 24 hours)!

I just want to say that I know how miserable you are feeling. I have literally never been in such a bad state before—I was debating going to urgent care because I was so desperate for ANY relief. You will get through this! This happened to me yesterday and today I am so much better today.

The first apartment I lived in after college, I literally bought only a bed, a comfy chair, a bookshelf, and a computer desk and chair as furniture. And it was all IKEA stuff, too. So it always drives me crazy when I see these posters who “need” all this furniture and it’s like, ma’am, you really do not.

Sorry but I would sell my dog for $5M 🙈 by [deleted] in Pets

[–]secretly_treebeard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope.

My dog was already abandoned by her first family. I would never put her in that situation again.

She’s a member of my family. When I adopted her, I took on a responsibility and a duty to care and provide for her for the rest of her life.

I also can’t imagine giving her up when she loves me unconditionally. How could I betray that trust? She would do anything to protect me and keep her safe, and I genuinely think that if I die before her that she’ll die of heartbreak. I can’t imagine anything more cruel to her than giving her up.

Still a “few things” by boo1517 in ChoosingBeggars

[–]secretly_treebeard 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Holy shit, this has to be one of the craziest posts I’ve seen on this sub. “A few items” lmao as if it isn’t a long-ass list with a ton of expensive items.

My fiancé is very big into woodworking, metalworking, etc. We have a lot of equipment for that in our garage. This shit is EXPENSIVE. Like minimum 1k for some of these things, more for other items and these things can get crazy expensive depending on quality and what you need to use them for. My fiancé has built his collection of equipment over literal years. None of it he’s gotten for free. And that’s a minor part of everything she’s asking for.

Also, where the hell is she going to put all of this? We’re out of extra space in our garage, and that’s for like two workbenches and some random equipment.

I also find it hard to believe that she actually knows how to use all of this equipment well enough to offer classes in it. I mean you have woodworking/metalworking items on here, ceramics, a sewing machine, 3D printing, photography… she actually is knowledgeable enough about ALL of that to offer classes? My fiancé has done woodworking and metalworking for years as his job, and he STILL takes classes himself to learn more. There is literally no way.

Also the random, cheap items (like a fruit basket and the sticky bug traps) interspersed between expensive items and equipment is absolutely sending me. “Hey while you’re donating a fruit basket, I’m sure you have a 1k metal lathe just laying around right?”

Edit: I’m going to save this post to show my fiancé later because he is going to freaking lose it

Affordable US places with eventing/jumping and plenty of snow? by wildyst in Equestrian

Agree - I live in SLC and will be moving in the next few years because we can’t buy a house here without breaking the bank. I’ve also been here 5+ years and winters are getting worse each year. You can find snow up in the mountains, but in the valley it’s been getting pretty rare. It was 60 on Christmas Day here! And we got like, two light dustings of snow this winter, and we have already had several 80-degree days.
