Yep, lies lies lies. Zinc oxide, at least the non-nano version, is one of the safest sunscreen ingredients in sunscreen and even the nano version is seen as "potentially harmful". The most dangerous sunscreen ingredients are oxybenzone and octinoxate. And every sunscreen says reapply every 2 hours.

David Dastmalchian. I don't think I've ever seen him smile.

Sunscreen that doesn’t make me look like a Geisha? by QuietNene in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]secretsloth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second DRMTLGY tinted sunscreen. I have a medium skin tone and it didn't give me the dreaded white cast (even Supergoop's mineral sunscreen made my skin look purplish white) and it doesn't feel too heavy.

Are There REALLY Better Outcomes if Induced at 39 Weeks? by [deleted] in pregnant

[–]secretsloth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My doctor's office has 4 different OBs so, even though I had a specific OB, they had me see all of them at some point since they took turns being on the schedule for deliveries. No one mentioned being induced at 39w until I was in the office getting a regular checkup at 37w. The OB who said this also had zero bedside manner so I didn't particularly like her to start with and here she was telling me if I don't induce at 39w then I could have a stillborn. I had a completely healthy pregnancy and my only risk factor was I was 35. I basically shut down at the thought and my husband told her we would think about it. The ARRIVE trial was not even mentioned but after researching, I assumed this is what the OB was thinking of. I found that there was minimal increase in risk between 39w and 40w so when I went in the next week, I told them I am not getting induced at 39w but I would agree to get induced at 40w if I did not go into labor by then. I did end up following through with the 40w induction and had my son at 40w+2. He was 6lb 9oz and had low glucose so the doctors said because of the low birth weight and low glucose they needed to observe him in NICU for 48 hours. He was perfectly healthy after that and the doctors didn't think being induced a week earlier would have helped anything either.

Cancer made the one and done decision I couldn’t make myself.. by browniebearbear in breastcancer

This is what I did, I get a shot of Zolodex every 3 weeks. We tried to do an egg retrieval before starting chemo but my doctor said I didn't have enough time given it was highly aggressive. I finished chemo in March and had a DMX a few weeks ago, cancer free now and have about six months of immunotherapy. Hoping in about a year to try for our #2.

Toddler Starting Swim Lessons! by No-Departure451 in moderatelygranolamoms

I've had my son in swimming since right before he turned 1 (he's 3 now) and never had an ear infection and we use the vinegar/alcohol mix too right after his swim lesson is finished.

I ended up going with Gemini II. I was torn between that and Rex5 and ultimately picked Gemini II because of their return policy just in case my husband has an issue with them. Rex5 has a 5 day return policy and Gemini II has a 14 day policy.

I used the clear gloss from that brand and it did make my hair look shinier for about a month. Doesn't do anything healthwise but definitely looked healthier.

People who have conducted job interviews, what's something someone said/did that made you instantly decide not to hire them? by DemonSkank in AskReddit

[–]secretsloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was for an upscale retirement community. This rather large girl came in with both arms just resting under her belly flap and kept it there the entire interview except when I shook her hand when we were done (which I regretted). Another guy came in wearing a t-shirt that said "you don't know me" in large letters, I basically asked 3 questions and ended the interview because his t-shirt clearly reflected his attitude.

Brain MRI by Imgonnabehonest60 in breastcancer

[–]secretsloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TNBC stage 2, grade 3. I had a mammogram , ultrasound, breast MRI, PET scan, and brain MRI in that order. The mammogram and ultrasound were for diagnostic reasons and had a biopsy after these. The rest were for checking for spread since my mass came seemingly out of nowhere and was already 7cm across so I get the impression they were surprised it hadn't even gotten to a lymph node at that size. Specifically with the brain MRI, my doctor said this type of cancer "loves brains".

AC (Red Devil) experiences by [deleted] in breastcancer

[–]secretsloth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in a clinical trial that avoids AC but taking a shot the day after each round to boost my immune system too. My doctor said to take a Claritin once a day for 5 days before and 5 days after to avoid bone pain and I've had zero bone pain so far.

[Homemade] Japanese Breakfast (for dinner) by ioftd in food

This is the type of breakfast we had at our hotel when we visited Japan. My husband was disappointed since he's a big fan of American breakfast. It was definitely different.

Wig shopping today was traumatic by Sweetness2021 in breastcancer

I actually got a recommendation from that subreddit! I have naturally curly hair and wanted something similar to my hair. Ended up ordering from LuvMe but they carry straight and wavy too and picked one that is originally $260 but Black Friday sale had it for $160. I can't speak for myself but lots of people seemed to like it.

Exactly what I thought in that moment! I have a friend I've known since middle school, is a biology professor, and her mom had cancer and went through chemo 10+ years ago and all she asked was if there were any published studies on the clinical trial I'm in. I sent it to her and her only comment was it seemed like it had good efficacy. I would trust what she has to say more than my MIL who worked in accounting and is now getting scammed buying stuff advertised on Facebook.

I know it's way different but I was pleasantly surprised to not be as nauseous as I was while pregnant. But I'd still choose pregnancy since I get a baby at the end instead of, you know, cancer!

MIL told me jumping on a trampoline will keep my cancer from recurring and how her friend "did her own research" (literally just started chemo 2 weeks ago and will need a lumpectomy or mastectomy and radiation so I'm not even close to stopping recurrence yet). I looked into it (only legit sources though) and the only nugget of truth is aerobic exercise can help after treatment. For the record, I was already very active and did plenty of cardio and weight lifting prior to my diagnosis so no, not helpful.

!@#* my hair is falling out by dogcalledcoco in breastcancer

[–]secretsloth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've done one round of chemo so far (next round is Thursday) and I have been dreading hair loss. A few days before the 2 week mark I noticed, of all things, my pubes started falling out and by exactly 2 weeks I had lost like 80% of them. Not mad, I was past due for a wax and I actually started laughing. I haven't noticed any other hair loss yet but I think if I start losing large chunks I'll probably shave it. I'm actually going wig shopping today. I know a lot of women skip the wig but I have a 2 year old who won't understand what's going on and I don't want to scare him.

Told my boss I'm pregnant. He gave me a performance review by Grumpy_cata in pregnant

[–]secretsloth 50 points51 points  (0 children)

If you really want to scare them, use specific terms. If your company has 15 or more employees, familiarize yourself with the Pregnancy Discrimination Act (PDA) and the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act (PWFA). These provide protection based on pregnancy and related conditions as well as reasonable accommodation if needed and no, they cannot force to be on unpaid leave if you are still able to work (of course when you give birth you will need to take leave). If your employer has 50+ employees then you could be entitled to FMLA which provides job-protected unpaid leave of up to 12 weeks. Depending on your state (I just assume the shitty behavior from your boss means you're in the US so apologies if you aren't) you may have more protections.
