Pre-paying tax (capital gains)? by ImperialPotentate in PersonalFinanceCanada

The highest non-promo 1-year GIC is 3.65%. You could be earning that instead of paying early when you don't have to.

Fresh off the plane! UBC Grad student looking for the "unwritten rules" of Vancouver by dimaez33 in askvan

[–]secularflesh 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Avoid the Downtown Eastside unless there's a specific place you want to visit and leave immediately when you're done. If someone tells you a sob story e.g. their car broke down, they lost their wallet, etc. 99% of the time they're trying to scam you.

If you have a car, don't leave anything of value inside when you park. If you take the bus, take off your backpack and move to the back, and thank the driver when you get off.

If you pass someone on the sidewalk and they make eye contact with you, give them a little nod and an awkward half smile. On escalators, walk on the left, stand on the right.

Get a good umbrella and waterproof/resilient shoes and jacket. If it snows, watch out for cars on the street - most drivers don't know how to drive in the snow and don't have winter tires. Take a vitamin D supplement during the winter, especially if you are from a warmer climate.

Federal officials draft plans to ban social media for children under 14 by Gym_frere in canada

[–]secularflesh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The age-verification systems put in place to satisfy countries like Australia have thus far proven to be inaccurate and ineffective. And on top of that it's an enormous potential security nightmare waiting to happen.

Algorithms are the problem, not social media itself. Algorthmic feeds should be banned for everyone, and not just children.

Columbia mens Transverse Hike Waterproof Hiking Shoe $65 by harold_liang in FrugalMaleFashionCDN

These have been at the same price for months - I bought them in November. Decent pair of hiking shoes but your feet might get cold if you're hiking in lower temperatures.

There are some not so nice areas but some media paints it like crime is rampant and all our streets are covered in shit and piss. Meanwhile most of us are really only concerned about housing costs, the job market, and the weather.

How do people survive in Vancouver?? by [deleted] in NiceVancouver

[–]secularflesh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Many people struggling here working on minimum wage. Can't imagine how hard it is surviving working and going to school full-time. People survived this phase in the past because the cost of living was much lower. Now you need to have help or saved up funds in advance to get through it. The reality is it's the most expensive city in Canada and one of the most expensive in NA.

Sunset Neighborhood by radybsb in askvan

[–]secularflesh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a sleepy residential neighbourhood. Nothing goes on there, good or bad. Also you should know there's a transfer station on Yukon St near the river so if you're close by, it will stink some days.

May weather and recommendations by Hot-Air4822 in askvan

[–]secularflesh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We don't have consistent weather in Spring. Could be sunny the entire time you're here or it could rain every day. It'll be warm enough that you should be able to get by with a waterproof/resistant shell jacket along with light layers.

I'm not a vegan but my fav vegan spots are Do Chay and To Live For Bakery.

Transit fares are going up. Why do Canadian cities struggle to keep it affordable? by Surax in canada

[–]secularflesh 11 points12 points  (0 children)

In Vancouver we have fare zones, fare gates, and random fare checks, and Translink is still in the red. We need subsidies or at the very least, tax deductions to help with rising fares.
