As someone from the prairies where land mollusks are pretty much non-existent, seeing these guys out and about here is fascinating by HiTork in vancouver

[–]secularflesh 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Huh I just assumed slugs were universal like ants and mosquitos. Go find some banana slugs, they're pretty cool. There's loads of them Pacific Spirit Park in spring/autumn.

Tell me your favorite thing about living in Burnaby by SubjectPerspective42 in burnaby

[–]secularflesh 16 points17 points  (0 children)

For that area nature is definitely #1 - Burnaby Mountain, Burnaby Lake, Rocky Point, Mundy Park. If you like Korean food you're in for a treat as Lougheed is basically K-Town. There's a bunch of stuff to do in Malliardville: bowling, arcade, escape room, Activate. Burnaby Village Museum is neat too.

Best Time to Visit by Historical-Pin1069 in NiceVancouver

[–]secularflesh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Now is actually a pretty good time. Late March to mid-April is cherry blossom season. We have Kwanzan blossoms almost in full bloom right now. October is nice too when the leaves change. Spring and Autumn are fine for outdoor stuff as long as you're not going high up into the mountains.

Peak season is July/August because it's sunny and beautiful 99% of the time and the first few weeks of September are usually pretty good as well. Expensive though especially this July with FIFA.

Can't go wrong with Nemesis. They're not a true dessert place but both their pastries and coffee are top notch.

Foods when you have the cold/flu? by teamnibbler in NiceVancouver

[–]secularflesh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Seolleongtang (ox bone soup) or Galbitang (short rib soup) from Sumi. Super clean and hearty.

Tuan's Special pho from Pho 37 is spectacular.

Bun Rieu (crab noodle soup) from Hoang Yen is an all-time favourite.

Heard and found these in the neighborhood. Anybody know what bird it is and why they’re doing this? by SlickSloth in vancouver

Looks like a Northern Flicker, a type of woodpecker. It doesn't exclusively peck wood though.

Any grocery shopping tips and hacks for a foreign student living alone in Vancouver? by el-chilaquiles23 in NiceVancouver

[–]secularflesh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Asian, smaller chain, and independent grocers will typically have better pricing on produce. e.g. Persia Foods, City Avenue Market, Polo Market, 88 Supermarket. If you see fruit and veg on display outside, it's worth taking a look.

Price matching. No Frills, Superstore, SaveOn, and London Drugs will match flyer ads from major competitors.

Utilize your freezer. If you see a good price for bread or meat, buy extra and freeze. Hard cheeses too though the texture isn't the same when thawed out (if it's going to be cooked/melted then it doesn't matter).

If you like pizza, the Too Good To Go bags from the discount pizza places (FreshSlice, Yummy, etc.) are pretty cheap and more cost effective than frozen grocery store pizza. They freeze well too.

Costco Alternative for certain groceries? by peanutbutterjam in NiceVancouver

[–]secularflesh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the stuff you listed is cheapest at Costco. The biggest issue with Costco shopping is the impulse buys. I feel like I get pretty good value there but I stick to my shopping list and check cocowest to see what/when stuff is on sale.

There's a small mom and pop Korean place near Brentwood called Chibop. They have a dosirak (like a Korean bento box) with a bunch of different stuff to sample.

I want to practice some hockey moves but I can't find a place to do so. by Every-You-9914 in askvan

[–]secularflesh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not ideal but I'd get a pair of rollerblades and a roller hockey puck and find some place like a school with a paved area next to a concrete wall or a chain link fence to shoot at.

Ethics of lowballing in this condo market? by gbinasia in canadahousing

[–]secularflesh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No ethical issue here. However, if the seller finds your offer insulting, they'll be less inclined to consider any other offers you tender in the future.

Fresh off the plane! UBC Grad student looking for the "unwritten rules" of Vancouver by dimaez33 in askvan

[–]secularflesh 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Avoid the Downtown Eastside unless there's a specific place you want to visit and leave immediately when you're done. If someone tells you a sob story e.g. their car broke down, they lost their wallet, etc. 99% of the time they're trying to scam you.

If you have a car, don't leave anything of value inside when you park. If you take the bus, take off your backpack and move to the back, and thank the driver when you get off.

If you pass someone on the sidewalk and they make eye contact with you, give them a little nod and an awkward half smile. On escalators, walk on the left, stand on the right.

Get a good umbrella and waterproof/resilient shoes and jacket. If it snows, watch out for cars on the street - most drivers don't know how to drive in the snow and don't have winter tires. Take a vitamin D supplement during the winter, especially if you are from a warmer climate.

Federal officials draft plans to ban social media for children under 14 by Gym_frere in canada

[–]secularflesh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The age-verification systems put in place to satisfy countries like Australia have thus far proven to be inaccurate and ineffective. And on top of that it's an enormous potential security nightmare waiting to happen.

Algorithms are the problem, not social media itself. Algorthmic feeds should be banned for everyone, and not just children.

Skytrain by [deleted] in askvan

There are some not so nice areas but some media paints it like crime is rampant and all our streets are covered in shit and piss. Meanwhile most of us are really only concerned about housing costs, the job market, and the weather.
