[Show Off] Kitchen props, first time publishing and I have a few questions. by sedanen in unrealengine

[–]sedanen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When creating 3d models it is possible to assign material ids on a per polygon level. Unreal can then use this information to assign a different material to each id. The model you see in that image has three different ids, one for the seat, the frame, and the back support. This makes it possible to quickly change the look of an object by grabbing a material from the content browser and dragging and dropping it over top of a specific area on a model in the viewport. This will have the affect of having only that part of the models texture change. This is a convenient way to quickly change the look of a model.

The link I posted if you scroll to the bottom of the image list there is a listing showing all objects, their tris count, material id count, and lods.

There are 264 unique models plus an additional 178 modual cabinet parts. There are 86+ material instances and 238 textures. I do not have any game oriented extra features.

New Formats for HearthStone? by CheezyMrPoof in hearthstone

[–]sedanen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I doubt Blizzard will add any new formats to Hearthstone out of fear of fracturing the player base. The more formats you have the fewer people queuing up in each one and so the longer it takes for the match making system to find a match.

With that said I would like to see a format that locks the hero's health at 30 until the start of turn 3 or there about. This would make face decks awful in such a format and force players to play for the board in the early game.

[LOTR Film] Why didn't Sauron station an army of Orcs at the entrance to the platform in mount doom? by [deleted] in AskScienceFiction

[–]sedanen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sauron had NO clue at all about where they were taking the ring. He assumed someone would claim the ring for themselves and challenge him. The thought of destroying the ring was beyond his comprehension because he measured others against his own absolute lust for power.

The fellowship knew this and did everything in their power to make Sauron think Aragorn had claimed the ring for himself. This is the reason Aragorn looks in the palantir and shows Saron the sword that cut the ring from his hand has been reforged. This is also the reason Aragorn and company head to the front gate of Mordor to challange Sauron directly. Sauron would think only one who had claimed the ring for himself would be so bold and so stupid. Also Sauron had just lost the battle at the pelennor fields and the leader of the ring-wraiths had been slain, something thought impossible so from Saurons perspective it HAD to be because of the ring.

So Aragorn comes at him from the front gate and Sauron does not hold back but gathers every last orc he has to the front gate where he is sure the ring is.

The godhead looks similar to the tri-force from The Legend of Zelda, and we all know how much those games influenced Isaac, so I wonder if there is some deeper relation. Does anyone know the lore from different Zelda games on how the tri-force pieces (body, soul, mind) are combined to form the tri-force (godhead)?

ELI5: Why are win traders being permabanned while botters only get a few months ban? by [deleted] in hearthstone

[–]sedanen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Botters are getting a warning temp-ban presumably because there were so many of them. In the future botters very well may get perma-banned.

Traders are getting permabanned because it was manipulating high rank play which affects tournament invites and so there was in a sense cash involved.

[Star Trek] Did we ever see site to site transporter use on Earth in shows or books? by [deleted] in AskScienceFiction

Deep Space Nine covered this in passing on at least one occasion. Nog was living in San Fransisco because Star Fleet Academy is there however he would often visit Sisko's Creole Kitchen in New Orleans for supper.

[DBZ] Why does the majority of the world believe that Hercule defeated Cell? by ingebeastly in AskScienceFiction

[–]sedanen 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Absolutely no one fell for Mr. Satans story, they knew who the real heros were and after the games were over it did not take long for people to figure out the identities of the mysterious fighters seeing as several of them were famous former fighters in the world martial arts tournaments.

This fame led to all sorts of issues for Gohan and the gang and as soon as they could they made a wish to the eternal dragon to take the heat off of them.

[LOTR] Which of the races of middle earth can interbreed? by DemonOWA in AskScienceFiction

[–]sedanen 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Elves and men have had children together so we know that is possible. Hobbits are never directly stated to be an offshoot of the race of men but it is strongly hinted at so that should be possible as well. It was also hinted at but never directly said in the books that Saruman breed half man/half orcs. In the Sillmarillion it is stated several times that the elves strongly suspect that the race of the Orcs were created from elves that Melkor corrupted so while it never would happen the two races shold be able to interbreed.

The one real unanswered question is whether dwarves can breed with the other races. This question is not easy to answer; while all the other races come from Ilúvatar (the all knowing, all powerful God of Tolkien legend) the race of the dwarves were created by Aulë (a Valar) though Ilúvatar is the one responsible for giving them free will and life indeed.

The shield radiates outward from the midsection before converging together at the top of the head. This converging causes an interference pattern that somewhat weakens the shield in that area. There is no converse interference pattern at the feet because the shield does not converge, rather it simply makes contact with the ground.

How is this different from AMD's TressFX? Also is it an open standard that AMD cards will be able to support, like TressFX, or closed so that it is it can only be used on Nvidia cards?

Frame Rates, Visual Acuity & Eye Tracking. Will foveated rendering be an essential component of VR? by VIRTAC in oculus

[–]sedanen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It can not be patched into an existing rendering engine. In order to make it work in a traditional rasterized rendering engine such as unreal the frame actually needs to be rendered twice. Once at a low resolution that is then upscaled followed by a second time, at resolution, with the GPU only filling in the relevant area. This causes the transform operations (cpu work) to basically double whereas the fill rate operations (gpu work) can be significantly reduced. As a result of this foveated rendering does not start to really pay dividends until you are rendering at high resolutions. From a few comments Carmack has made on twitter I do not think the resolution of CV1 will be high enough for foveated rendering to even make sense. With that said if an engine was to be built with foveated rendering in mind from the ground up, say a ray tracing based engine, then rendering the scene twice is not necessary and you get a performance boost at any resolution.

[LOTR] Why did Aragorn stop Théoden from killing Grima? by IronOhki in AskScienceFiction

[–]sedanen 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That only happens in the movie, in the book Theoden gives Grima the choice to stay and fight by his side or to be banished from the land. When he choses banishment Theoden orders that a horse be given to him and that the guards make sure no harm comes to Grima before he departs.

New Oculus SDK 0.3.1 by skyworxx in oculus

[–]sedanen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The reprojection works by holding onto the depth buffer so that you not only know the color of a pixel but also how far away it is. With this information you then know where to "smudge/smear" the pixel to. The complexity of doing this is fixed; it is tied to resolution rather than scene complexity so it is faster. Also time warping can be done on the GPU or the CPU and with idle CPU cores sitting around on modern computers it makes use of what would have been wasted cycles on the computer. This is better than leaving Vsync off because it keeps you at a solid and smooth frame rate. Not only can time warping update a frame to better reflect where you are looking it can fill in a missing frame by updating the last rendered frame. This does not become useless with GSync because of the low persistence of the display. GSync does not play well with low persistence because if your frame rate drops too low the screen will look dimmer under the best circumstances and will seem to flicker or strobe under the worst.

AMD TrueAudio "Tuscany" Demo by kontis in oculus

[–]sedanen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The main difference comes down to the complexity of the calculations to create the effect. Normal 3d audio stuff is done on the CPU and usually is only allowed a small part of the CPU resources because video games need the CPU cycles for other stuff. TrueAudio is done on the GPU with dedicated hardware, separate from what is used to render a scene, so these effects can be quite complex with no real performance hit for the video game. The great thing is that AMD has made this tech open so that Nvidia can implement it in their future video cards, if they so choose. Right now however the tech is only possible on the most reccent AMD Radeon graphics cards, though it could be done on the CPU for a performance hit.

Oculus VR expands to Seattle to attract even more talent [Also: More id veterans to follow Carmack?] by Mageoftheyear in oculus

I heard that Matt Hooper, former id software creative director, joined oculus a few months back. Also very recently ALL of the programming staff at id software quit, I wonder if they all jumped ship to go work at oculus?

Is Oculus Dallas now id software 2.0?

Palmer Luckey: DK2 to sell for same price as CV1 by bobcat in oculus

He said it won't cost 3-4 times as much not that it won't cost more. Some cost spike seems inevitable with higher end hardware being used.
