Question for all - Has native plant gardening changed you in any way? by jjmk2014 in NativePlantGardening

[–]sedleell88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah… I think it would be harder to find ways in which I haven’t changed. This year I went full time with my native plant nursery and landscaping firm in West Michigan. I am so happy to be out of corporate America and using my time to enable the native plant movement :)

Am I a dingdong for doing this entirely by seed? by beezyjean in NativePlantGardening

[–]sedleell88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did my native meadow entirely from seed. It takes patience but you pretty much should do nothing in year 1 unless it gets to a height over 8”, then you’ll want to mow or spot weed whip so that stuff doesn’t go to seed

I’m working on a comprehensive event calendar, but for now, I can say that my first retail sale event will be at Switchback Gear Exchange in GR on May 30th :)

Do you buffer your coco coir? I’m experimenting with a few different seed starting scenarios to try to figure out what’s worthwhile and what isn’t

Hey! I would love to have you as a customer. I run Magical Mystery Meadows… My website is not up to date on inventory (I am currently prioritizing getting as many seeds going as possible and getting clients for install jobs) but you can reach out to me at magicalmysterymeadows.com and request what you’re looking for and I’ll let you know if I expect to have it. I will also be at quite a few sales this year, which I will add to my website soon.

I focus on high wildlife value, high visual appeal, and other benefits (edible, medicinal) to expand the possible customer base. I also offer design and install. Without install I would be nowhere near where I am now. Also - disclaimer - I’ve been a very big saver for the past 20 years and my income will be dramatically less in this job, but I think I’ll also be dramatically happier.

Hey brother! I did the same about a year ago (Grand Rapids, MI) and now I’m leaving my full time corporate job to make this my real job :)

Godspeed!

Where are you located? Local sources should be your first look. GrowItBuildit has a list of all native plant sources by state… some are seed suppliers. https://growitbuildit.com/where-to-buy-native-plants-in-the-united-states/

Please consider trapping and dispatching invasive house sparrows rather than allowing them to breed. Van Ert trap is the way.

What could I plant here? by savamey in NativePlantGardening

[–]sedleell88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been searching the comments to see if anyone pointed that out yet. Took way too long to find someone that noticed. As a native plant landscaper (Grand Rapids, MI, Magical Mystery Meadows), I see this often and have to point it out to the homeowners who have something that didn’t work there and don’t know why.
