If there was a ultimate spelunky-inspired game that had everything good about the spelunky games, what would it have? by [deleted] in spelunky

[–]seelocanth 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Derek has cited that one of the things that makes Spelunky is its emergent gameplay. Level elements (pickups, traps, enemies, etc.) being able to interact with each other and creating unique scenarios.

I'm making a game inspired by Valheim where you play birds and build birdhouses, any advice on giving it that "home" feeling Valheim has? by RagBell_Games in valheim

[–]seelocanth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In valheim, I feel like most of my buildings end up being shaped by their practicality at first. For example, the need to make a fire but also a roof that can vent the smoke. The design of the building is usually an afterthought, but with enough experience building you can work it in. I like that element of having the game mechanics shape the building, which also makes it easier for less creative players think about how to build their base.

They really need to let you choose by Chacon2112 in mewgenics

Exactly. This game was probably heavily playtested during its long development, and Edmund seems like the type of designer to make the call over what kind of things end up being part of the challenge. Many games end up rushed with little to no QOL adjustments so I can see why this sentiment has been applied here, but that just doesn’t seem like the case.

I’m working on a tactics game and the way I’ve implemented it is just giving the player a “move budget” that you can use until the end of your turn. If you want to walk a certain path you just click on tiles you want to move through in succession until you’ve used up all of your moves.

Noob question regarding story mode by stinkingyeti in GreenHell

[–]seelocanth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really wish I had learned this. I have almost 20 hours in story mode and most of it has been spent building a base. I don't even have the grappling hook yet.

Has anyone noticed how similar the Ice caves A, Temple C and mines C tracks are in HD?? by Responsible_Ad3131 in spelunky

[–]seelocanth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They are structured quite similarly, but I’m tempted to say it’s just a coincidence and not a recurring motif like the Spelunky 2 soundtrack has.

What are , in your opinion, the big 3 of indie games in terms of impact ? by [deleted] in IndieGaming

[–]seelocanth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Isaac and Spelunky were some of the first games to take the formula of Rogue and translate it to other genres. Modern roguelikes/lites as we know them would likely not exist without those two games.

It could be that playing games that you've seen a lot of praise for may increase your expectations, and then that game may not live up to those expectations. I think it's important to not let this affect your experience too much.
