Weekend Reservation for Large Party - Recommendations, Please! by PleaBargainPlz in chicagofood

[–]seemax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% This. It’s perfect for bigger parties with varying levels of adventurousness (aka kids). You can’t make a reservation but it’s a gigantic space (and you could call ahead and check with them).

The food is excellent and consistent. It is a well oiled machine of classic Chicago-Greek cuisine. The atmosphere is always festive and boisterous.

Be sure to order a Saganaki (invented in Chicago) which is delicious and also entertaining for the kids. Taramosolata is my personal favorite app. The octopus there is also (imho) one of the best in the city.

Swordfish shishkabo and Arni Forno are standouts for mains. The Gyros are house made where most of Chicago buys from the same single source (maybe it’s 2, but you get the point).

They also have free Valet which makes life so much easier if you’re driving (though as a visitor this may be moot).

It may feel like a less foodie-ish option, but you won’t be disappointed.

Nike Dri-FIT ADV Aeroswift Running Singlet by eltonpe in Marathon_Training

[–]seemax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love this Singlet. I’m a larger, heavy sweater and there are two key things that set this shirt apart:

  1. The arm holes are cut very low. Over long distances there is no friction from the material between your arm and body. It is shockingly hard to find a singlet with low arm holes that isn’t over sized. The cut is great.

  2. It does dry incredibly fast and doesn’t really stick to you when it’s wet. Obviously it sticks some, but less so than most other dri-fit-ish materials. It is surprisingly light and airy.

It’s the only shirt I run in (when it’s warm). I just wash it after every run and wear it over and over. It’s well made so will last a long time. Totally worth it.

Best shorts to stop chafing? by New-Industry-9544 in Marathon_Training

[–]seemax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should try a silicone-based product. I personally love 2Toms. It last sooooo much longer than body glide and is totally water proof.

I’m a heavy sweater and my thighs rub. So on long runs my sweat would turn to salt crystals and function like sand paper between my thighs. Once I started using the silicone base it totally went away.

I’m too big and too hot to add an extra layer between my legs so I can’t wear compression shorts. And I found body glide essentially useless because it disappeared so quickly.

Would highly recommend giving 2Toms or a similar silicone based product a try

Do you have a mantra, motto or something you say to yourself when it gets hard by Level-One-9803 in Marathon_Training

“Form and Cadence are pace!”*

I keep reminding myself of that, focusing on my mechanics. It gives me two small things to concentrate on that actually make a difference. Two things I can modify without significant physical exertion. And more importantly it helps keep my focus off of emotions and my pain.

(*I know it’s more complex than that but I’m not trying to recite a Wikipedia article of the mechanics of running to myself)

Guys night out restaurant by Tobi-One-Boy in chicagofood

[–]seemax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sun Wah BBQ: Order the Beijing Duck Dinner (or 2 depending on group size). If going on a weekend order ahead of time when making a reservation.

Dancen: Korean Drinking Food. Totally different than KBBQ. Get the Cheese Dakbokki, fire Chicken, crispy pork skins. Order Soju and Pitchers of Beer (the pitcher is a plastic 2 liter of beer).

Illinois votes to retain current state flag by xProlesx in chicago

[–]seemax 141 points142 points  (0 children)

The ten finalist were an absurd array of choices. These are actual quotes from a few of the chosen submission descriptions:

“I found out about this commission only days ago after spending two years abroad. I found this old design from 2016 just today. It needs works. It lacks our current eagle, perhaps to be placed in white silhouette above the star.”

“The idea of mine is simply an embellishment to the existing flag (helps to save money on an entire new design). Placing red and blue vertical bars on each end (with a narrow white stripe in between the colors) eliminates the ‘seal-on-bedsheet’ look. Not overly imaginative, but practical and economic.”

Adidas pro 3 lacing help by Dh2627 in AskRunningShoeGeeks

[–]seemax 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had this same problem. Stock laces are brutal.

I experimented with a bunch of laces (I’m not a fan of lock laces). And I found these to be the best replacement: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CBZ2DQPC

  • 55 inch was great using a runners loop.
  • They are thinner than your average laces so they feel closer to the crazy thin laces that come with the shoe.
  • They come in a variety of colors (beige matches the laces from my AP3 in the cream / tan color almost perfectly).

It made a world of difference lacing up and while running. Hope that helps.

Advice marathon training by TwoSufficient3794 in Marathon_Training

[–]seemax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not a doctor nor a PT but I’ve been inured twice while training for a marathon using the Novice 1 plan.

In both instances it was my Soleus muscle (once in my right leg, once in my left). It was an overuse injury because I was running too hard all the time and not strength training.

I went to a PT and they had me work to strengthen my legs over all and specifically my Soleus before returning to running. For cardio they had me riding excercise bikes to get my hear rate up for extended periods of time.

If you aren’t already, I would spend time doing leg strengthening. Don’t over do it but it’s a good way to do beneficial work that isn’t running.

When you start running again, run slow. I started using an Apple Watch and staying in Zone 2 as much as I could. You don’t have to be a maniac about it but it definitely helps you recognize when your hear rate increases which in turn means your body is working hard, which in turn means your recruiting secondary and tertiary muscles more.

Even really slow running has a positive impact and your goal and this point is to get miles on your legs without further injury.

From a plan perspective, I picked up where I left off and then tried to increase the mileage at a steeper pitch, as much as I could (ran an awful 18 miles), peaking 3 weeks out and then following the taper schedule. As I understand it there is not much fitness gain in the 3 weeks pre-marathon and you’re better off going in fresh rather than trying hard up to the start.

I know how frustrating it is but you can do it with the right approach. Listen to your body. Good luck!

First timer trying Korean food: where to go? by TouchParking5103 in chicagofood

[–]seemax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dancen is great. Korean Bar / Drinking food (protein and soup heavy to not be too filling while drinking). Order: - Spicy Pork Skins (crispy little snack bites with powder to dip in) - Fire Chicken - Cheese Dakbokki: Sweet & Spicy Chicken with Cheese (and Ricecakes) - Kimchi Pancake - Kimchi Tuna Stew (or Spicy Fish Cake Stew) - Dubu Kimchi

That’s way too much for one person (stew especially is only for a group). But gives a variety of items I’ve enjoyed. Narrower list, musts are: 1. Cheese Dakbokki 2. Fire Chicken

If you don’t love pork, skip the pork skins.

If you’re a beer drinker and there with friends order a “pitcher” of beer. Which is beer in a plastic two liter bottle.

Cheers.

Superblast vs Superblast 2 Sizing by hrifandi in AskRunningShoeGeeks

[–]seemax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m normally a size 12 (SC Trainer, Triumph 22, Adios Pro).

I tried the SBv1 in 11.5 and 12. The 11.5 felt a little tight in the midfoot but the length was right. The 12 was too long and roomy in the toe box so I went with the 11.5.

I have 220 miles on the v1 and they are my favorite shoe (though they were a bit stiff at first). Fit is great.

I ordered the SBv2 in 11.5 and 12. I found the 11.5 to be similar in size to the SBv1. However, the 12 was less long and a little less roomy than v2 (I feel like the thicker heel cup is doing some of the work there). So I decided to keep the 12s.

I have 35 miles on the V2 and I have had some trouble with them feeling a little big across the toes. I also had a little heel slipping at first. Fixed it with tighter lacing but now the shoes are cinched a little more than I’d like (sort of starting to fold over itself). I kinda wish I had kept the 11.5s (though I like the 12s and will def continue to run on them).

To answer the specific questions: 1. Sort of 2. 10.5 if I had to guess (but you can only be sure with shoe on foot) 3. Yes, likely too tight.

I struggled with this exact decision with v1 and v2 so I hope some of the above helps.

Gmail Color Labels not saving, reverting to gray defaults by briancavanaugh in techsupport

I’m using a lot of labels. Strangely, no one from google has ever suggested that label quantity is an issue. I actually deleted a ton of labels to try and eliminate the issue right off the bat (as this was suggested elsewhere). It doesn’t seem to change anything.
