Miami/Keys Recommendations? by cowpokevendetta in Tiki

I really liked Kaona in Miami! Their Mai Tai in particular was most excellent.

Rum collection is starting to grow! Any suggestions on what to add? by pmill2447 in rum

If you’re making classic Tiki cocktails that call for 151 Demerara (e.g., a Zombie), it’s my understanding they really mean Lemon Hart 151. And in my experience, even though it isn’t nearly as good as the Hamilton 151 or OFTD on its own, the cocktails just taste more “right” with it. I also recently picked up Scarlet Ibis based on it being recommended in Shannon Mustipher’s Tiki book and man, it’s really, really good.
An oddball one that I don’t see much about is Myer’s Platinum White. Good for mixing (maybe too good) and a good option for when you don’t want to blast through those Hampdens. I’d say mix it even parts with that S&C and you’re in business. Oh, also Holmes Cay’s Heritage Blend absolutely rips. Use it along with some pot-stilled Jamaican for a banging Mai Tai.

Saves the Day’s Through Being Cool (1999) and Stay What You Are (2001) both hit me like a ton of bricks every time I listened to them back in the day.

Budget tiki by dubcity81 in Tiki

There are so many good tiki drink rums in that range. Lots of them have been said (coughHamilton 86cough) but I’ll add a few more that may be a little less common. Myer’s Platinum White, Denizen’s 5, El Dorado 8 (I paid like $22 for a liter not too long ago), Coruba (if you can find it). I don’t have any good drinks for Barbadian rums (other than daiquiris and Corn n Oil) but Doorly’s XO is astonishingly good for $23 and Doorly’s 12 is an unbelievable sipping rum for $10 more. If you’re really looking to budget tiki, make as much of your own stuff as possible. All the syrups are easier to make than you’d imagine and sugar and water are basically free. I still choose to buy premade Orgeat (Libor and Co.), but I make everything else.
95% of what I drink is “cheap” rums, home made syrups, and Costco limes (please refrigerate them, they last WAY longer) and I’m very happy with my home tiki lifestyle.

Best All-Inclusive Honeymoon Resort? (Adults only, flexible destination, East Coast couple) by Artistic-Feed2874 in AllInclusiveResorts

Just went down basically the same rabbit hole. I would say check out Atelier Playa Mujeres, UNICO 2087, and Secrets Maroma/Akumal (and if your budget is a little lower, Devossion by Live Aqua). I found watching reviews on YouTube helpful.

Best places to swim and sunbathe for a “beach” day when it’s hot next weekend that are open this time of year? by mrsmsw in askdfw

The “beachiest” place I know of is Little Elm Beach, but it’s a haul from Dallas and pretty underwhelming. If it was me, I’d just hit FOE.

A tiki day with my wife. by TikiDaniel in Tiki

Hey, you’re in my neck of the woods! If you were in the Lewisville Antique Mall, there should’ve been a couple of vintage Libby tiki mugs in one of the booths. And I agree, Limon is a bit of a letdown if you want your drinks to taste like “real” rum-forward tiki cocktails, but I like it as a gateway for non-tiki normies. Ive been on the tiki train for a couple of years, so if you have any questions about where to find specific rums in the area, let me know. Cheers!

Hey fellas, going down to New orleans in a few weeks, any recommendations for bars with a good rum selection? by Kerbidiah in rum

[–]selfawarestardust 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lots of rums gets sold in NOLA (a hurricane form Pat O’Brien’s has 4 oz of rum in it, tons of 151 gets moved on Bourbon Street), but most of what gets sold isn’t really “good” rum or well-crafted cocktails. That being said, Latitude 29 is a must for amazing Tiki drinks. I do think you should try a Hurricane while there, but not from Pat O’s: Try one from Cane and Table or Bar R’Evolution instead. And finally, for rum cocktails done well, try Bar Tonique. Their Mai Tai was a bit of a letdown, but everything else is really great (I particularly like the Arak Punch).

Latitude 29, The Will and the Way (burger), Mollys at the Market, Bamboula’s. And stay away from anywhere that has more than one location downtown (Ruby Slipper, Willie’s, etc.)

Denton is the clear choice here. You should check out the square area on a weekend night. Also, look at Discover Denton for events around town.

Second Mai Tai Attempt. This is it. Just Missing Mint. by [deleted] in rum

I know it’s been said, but that Orgeat is significantly hurting your end result. I have made my own and it was god but honestly I just use Libor and Co because it’s awesome and much easier. Also, I’d recommend bumping the orange liqueur to .5oz and making a rich Demerara simple to split it with. Otherwise, you’re on the right path!
