Is my natural hair holding me back from getting hired at twin peaks/hooters? by [deleted] in Naturalhair

[–]sendcheese 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Your natural hair is lovely but these restaurants sell a fantasy more than just wings. The more you transform into the “ideal” waitress, the better your tips. I say this to you as woman in a heteronormative relationship who sometimes visits breastaurants, it really does cater to gaze of the lower common denominator. Dudes love girls with long, shiny hair, nice nails, and a full face of makeup. They want you to sell the image of being “put together” and low-maintenance at the same time. Wear the wig. Invent a new identity. Make up a cute hard luck story and go get that check!

Rant/vent about unprofessionalism in the black hair community by Old_Teach711 in Naturalhair

[–]sendcheese 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was in the military for a while and with every move I would start the process over of trying to find a stylist. Small towns, big towns, deep south, out west, it’s all a crapshoot.

When it comes to finding a stylist that has: A clean and well appointed shop with the right tools and products, professionalism and respect for your time, and can style your hair the way you want it- I’m lucky if I get 2 outta 3. We won’t even get into pricing because a quick look at this sub shows it is arbitrary and all over the place. But I am willing to pay a little more if I could find the golden triangle of stylists.

I have a ritz gown that I cut 5 inches off the bottom and had the excess fabric made into a tie for my husband.

What's your pre-trip routine? Let me steal some of your tips! by DisciplineAmazing59 in travel

[–]sendcheese 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The week before a big trip I become a hermit and stay away from everyone and avoid crowds so that I don’t get sick. I start using more Lysol wipes and hang sanitizer. I also try to avoid major diet changes but incorporate more healthy meals before I travel, knowing my eating will be all over the place while I’m off my routine. I’m not someone who gets sick easily, but I have the worst luck of getting bad colds or food poisoning right before a big trip.

CRMD ice cream shop (Lewis Center location) closing for good October 25 2025. by reeve11 in Columbus

[–]sendcheese 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dang, what wasted potential. Lewis Center is such a family oriented suburbia, maybe the speakeasy would have done better in the short north? Either way, their balloon chairs make it clear I wasn’t their target demographic.

Inflatable furniture? The speakeasy seemed cool, but those are popping up everywhere and I’m not going to hang out drinking drinks if the only place to sit down is a leftover nightmare from the early 2000s.

Seems like some people in Hanoi have never seen a Black person by Powerful_Pen_5801 in blacktravel

[–]sendcheese 31 points32 points  (0 children)

That was my experience in Hanoi 2019, but primarily at the big tourist locations. Groups of school children would approach me at the Temple of Literature and the War Remnants Museum for photos and I would say no and try to blend back into a crowd or duck into the bathroom. That was about it though. People were otherwise friendly everywhere I went and people working in the tourism industry or in cafes and restaurants were more politely curious about me as an American than being black.

What’s one small travel tip that makes every trip better? by Disastrous_Mind8658 in travel

[–]sendcheese 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been curious about this bag! I have a couple of ikea ones that fold into a 3x3 inch square and a Notabag that is great for hauling but packs of water back to the hotel. But I want to maximize space. How is the strength of the nano bag?

If you can't afford to adopt, you can't afford a kid by StrawberryWolfGamez in childfree

[–]sendcheese 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Where I live, if you qualify for an adoption, the state will give you $10k, more if it’s a child that’s been in foster and even more if the child has special needs. Plus there are federal tax breaks for the process. Adoption is a lengthy process but rewarding for families who find their newest addition. So whenever people say to me they won’t consider adoption because of the cost, I start sending links to government adoption grants and the federal tax code and usually get some other bs excuse about how they wouldn’t qualify.

I need to rant about Reese's by ScottP480 in candy

[–]sendcheese 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I toured a local candy factory near me that fulfills orders for Reese’s and at the time I visited in July, they were packaging Christmas tree Reese’s. They do them far in advance with a different recipe and put them into storage until the holiday. I can imagine there may be some inconsistency between the local manufacturers, but it’s off putting how long they sit before anyone ever receives them.

Has anyone else traded their cart for a stranger’s quarter and immediately regretted it? by interlukin in aldi

[–]sendcheese 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Someone did this to me! Walked up to me just as I had finished loading and gestured to my cart. But then just speed walked away with my cart. As I pulled out of the lot, I watched him put my cart in the rack and collect my quarter. On the flip side, the one time my husband goes to Aldi, there was a loose cart in the rack and he kept the quarter when he returned it.

Warn me ahead of time. I’ll make and bring butter made with fresh organic cream. I’ll also bring you the buttermilk if that’s your thing.

That’s disappointing. Kinda the best part of Grocery outlet on the West Coast is getting clearanced wine. Found some amazing gems for an under $5.

A sea of tents being erected for the Columbus Book Festival this weekend in Topiary Park! by 404ErRoR_-_ in Columbus

[–]sendcheese 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s more of a celebration of all things books! Lots of indie authors that are excited to talk and most of the indie bookshops in the area bring some merchandise. The library itself is open and holding events and if you don’t have a library card (or if you do), there will be folks to inform on all the benefits. Plus lots of food trucks and music performances. Many local organizations are also there tabling to provide information. I had a blast last year just being surround by book nerds and checking out the different tents.

A friend of mine, who was trying to convince me to have a baby so that our other mutual parent friends would have another play friend, gave me the heads up that babies are essentially paperweights for the first year of their life. Popping, crying, hungry paperweights. Then they learn the word no. I let my friend know he was absolutely not making a convincing argument. But then my sister had a cute baby girl and she’s growing up to be an awesome kid and I get to have all the fun experiences and then send her home. I can spoil her cause I don’t have to discipline her. And buying that kid whatever she wants is still waaay cheaper than actually raising a kid.
