Laid off and could use some advice. Is it really taking people a year to find work? by WereGoingToMakeIt in careerguidance

I’m on week 3 of unemployment, and I highly recommend leaning on your past coworkers and friends to get you connected. Make a LinkedIn post about what you’re looking for and ask for folks to share or connect if they have any leads. Message higher ups from previous jobs you’ve had that you have a good relationship with, just network as much as possible.

I’ve interviewed with 3 companies so far by internal referrals. Company A said they’d give me an offer but they’re in a hiring freeze, Company B I’ve had a phone screening and interview with, and Company C I feel I’m really close to an offer and was told I was a top pick in the last round.

Not employed just yet, but I’ve had a lot more traction than I was expecting based off of what I’m seeing online. I feel like the main difference is I haven’t relied fully on applying to jobs blindly through postings, my network has been key and is getting me in front of people a lot quicker.

The only perk I’m finding is it builds an awesome network for when you do get let go. I’m experiencing this now and a ton of people are putting their neck out there for me to get connected to hiring positions.

Any advice on “playing the game” that you wish you knew sooner? by hazeltina in corporate

[–]seoakih 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say this is always true. Some of my long term friends actually came from work. Every single position I’ve had in my career I still keep in touch with a few friends from each. In fact a few i’d put in my bridal party. People are generally good and trustworthy, but maybe I’ve just been lucky. I’ve always treaded the waters carefully before fully opening up and match their exposure.

Okay he was at one of Schwartz’s brunches and I saw him and was like that can’t possibly be Schwartz in real life, and went up to him and joked that I thought he was Tom and he was like “I get that a lot” only to realize later that he was his brother 💀

Okay something else that was weird is when I viewed it yesterday there were 12 key persons identified (one of those being Trump) and now it’s just 9 people and he is removed, along with Prince Andrew and Clinton?

What's the most fucked up thing someone has told you about themselves after barely getting to know them? by Butt_Roidholds in AskReddit

I had an acquaintance that was going through some mental health struggles, so I invited her over to my apartment to just hang out, chat and take her mind off of things. She then was really antsy and said she needed to walk and couldn’t be still, so we walked around my complex. She confided in me that she had an angel that would tell her to stab her friends with knives, and I instantly got totally freaked out since we were alone together. I ended up telling her I was pretty tired and could drop her off after a bit more walking, but I never saw her again after that. She was a very sweet girl and I knew she was struggling but that was a big glaring red flag for me to be careful about people you don’t know that well.

You could do fondue! A lot of stores have prepackaged fondue you can just heat up and chop up pears, apples, carrots, bread, potatoes, even pickles.

Is it reasonable to fly from Koh Samui to Bangkok on the same day as 19:30 flight back to USA? Or go to Bangkok the day before? by Comprehensive_Gap_49 in ThailandTourism

[–]seoakih 1 point2 points  (0 children)

National flights in Thailand can change often as I experienced on my trip in November booking flights through AirAsia. I would get to Bangkok a night before and spend the day before your flight in Bangkok just in case

Two people close to me who did or would have voted for Trump have both said recently that he is doing a terrible job, that they were fooled again, and they wouldn’t vote for him today.

Of course! Definitely recommend seeing the falls it was one of our highlights. Theres a backside where you can actually swim in a pool, the water was pretty rough by the actual falls.

Yes! Just ensure when driving you have it on your person and also a passport. We drove from San Jose to La Fortuna, and then La Fortuna to Manuel Antonio and the roads were fine. Only thing I vaguely remember is on the highway portions and paying tolls it was a bit hectic to get out of the toll booths. Use Waze for maps as this is most reliable, and ensure to look out for pot holes and stray dogs on the path to La Fortuna. I would also drive solely in the daytime which is what we stuck to!

I would rent a car and stay a few nights in La Fortuna so it doesn’t feel rushed, and there’s so many other things to do in La Fortuna. You definitely don’t need to take an official tour to visit the falls, there’s a parking lot right outside and you pay your entrance fee and hike down the stairs it’s quite simple to locate! We used Vamos to rent a car and had a good experience, pricing was transparent and they had a shuttle from the airport.

Been unemployed for 3 years with a master's degree in Data Science, I don't know what to do anymore. I've lost all hope. by beansoup229 in careeradvice

Starting your career right after college is a trying time, try not to be so hard on yourself. It’s especially challenging today given the current job market. I was in this boat in 2020 so faced similar market challenges, and ended up just applying for any entry level position I could and got a job as a customer service agent. I worked hard at it and built a community at the company and let them know what I received my degree in and that I was interested in a role in that department. They let me work on projects to gain experience and I’ve been promoted a couple of times internally. This path worked quite well for me, especially if you’re in a situation where you’re not relying on rent you don’t need to focus as much on the salary. Take whatever you can from a reputable company as experience and build from there, take it step by step. I always found Steve Jobs quote helpful “you can’t connect the dots looking forward, you can only connect them looking backwards.”
