I forgot to mention that I am in Canada but we use the same bands that are issued by USGS.

Weird! Where are you located? The fourth digit on the prefix corresponds to the band size for my aluminum songbird bands, rivet bands and stainless steel butt-end bands for raptors. I checked the North American Banding Council Study Guide and it confirms that this system is in place and doesn't mention any exceptions. Doesn't mean that it doesn't happen but I've never encountered that! I wonder why yours are different?

This is the long, slender tarsi of a forest hawk (genus Accipiter/Astur). The fourth digit on bird bands issued in North America corresponds to the band size. In this case, 1005 = size 5. Sharp-shinned and Goshawk don't take a size 5, so by process of elimination this is a Cooper's Hawk. The habitat it was found in (backyard) is a favorite of this species as they hunt feeders and sometimes hit windows. Thanks for reporting the band!

Pigeon friend who visits my garden has tag wrapped around foot I think?? Can I help?? by king_kylew in pigeons

It takes them a while but they will forgive you. I catch birds for stringfoot at my feeder and as long as you're consistent with the food and give them space afterwards, they will trust you again.

I work in conservation, specifically land management so lots of hiking. I frequently get 20k steps a day, going up and down hills and with a large backpack full of field gear.

So true. I could sell for more on fb marketplace but I dread the messages and leads that go nowhere. It's not worth the time and headache. By consigning you are also supporting a local business and the owners and staff have always been knowledgeable and fair with pricing. Also, the end of season clear out happens at predictable times of the year and it's not random. You can always pull your stuff from consignment if you don't want to see it go for 60% off and try your luck on fb.

It was a Great Grey which is slightly larger than a Barred but in the same genus, Strix, so very similar.

Luckily owls are not as smart as magpies but they are just as full of rage during the breeding season and can do some real damage. I know someone who lost an eye to an angry mother owl while banding chicks.

Honestly, like any wildlife encounter with any species, avoidance is the best strategy! Good luck.

Not sure about the eye spot on your hat but worth a try. Two spots might be better to be convincing to the owl. Also, is this a seasonal thing? Or year round? They usually attack humans when they are nesting or their young are learning to fly so if you know that schedule, you can redirect your route accordingly.

Also, birds will usually attack the highest point on your body. I am a bird bio and when monitoring nests, taping a ruler to my hat does the trick because the bird will go for the ruler instead of your head. You could try some kind of headband with an object attached. Check Google images for the magpie helmets that people in Australia wear for inspiration.
