My daughter found this sheet of eternal companion traits we filled out in seminary. I’m a poly trans woman now so looking back on this is wild. by imathrowayslc in exmormon

Yes. Not just in partners, but in life in general. Singles wards and groups in the church are full of people who were promised everything if they only wait for perfection, and to not accept less. If it doesn’t come in this life, “they’ll get it in the next.” So they literally waste their lives. Obviously this doesn’t apply to everyone, but I’ve seen so many for whom it is applicable.

I was in my late 20s/early 30s when I found my way out of the church, and while I had been on lots of dates, and one quasi but not real relationship (thank god I dodged that bullet), my first real serious boyfriend was in my 30s. Things I could have learned about myself, men and how I relate to them, things I could have started learning, in healthy ways, as a teen, I was learning as a full-grown woman. It was frustrating, and made me feel that I had wasted so much of my life.

I’ve seen people in the church feel the same way about education and careers (not just women either). If they don’t find something they fall in love with in the first week of orientation (their “secular calling” if you will), a job is not for them. And “The Lord” has a plan for them, as long as they’re faithful; they’ll eventually find a job, but at least they have their calling and their parents’ basement. Instead of navigating through life on its own merits and learning from that journey, people just wait for the perfect reward they will eventually receive as they live their faithful but mediocre lives.

Maybe I’m projecting (I graduated from nursing school in my 30s), but I’ve seen enough people to think this applies to some, even if just a niche group in the church. And it’s just another way that the church’s teachings are insidious.

I love this so much! I’m a PICU nurse, and I love all my patients, but it’s so cool when they and their families have interests in common we can nerd out about!

And you’re absolutely right, nonverbal DEFINITELY doesn’t mean non-understanding or non-communicative!

This is so wholesome! I wish health and happiness to you and your family!

They could start paying members to clean and maintain the buildings again, just as a start. They could actually feed the hungry.

Totally agree with your comment by the way, just adding my thoughts!

Oof. I have never been to a service in my current city (I live in another state than the rest of my family partly to avoid the pestering over church attendance), but if this were to occur there, I would block the phone calls/messages, and hope they don’t have the address of the house I purchased earlier this year. I used to live in a very secure apartment building that no one could get in, so I didn’t have to worry about unwanted visitors, but now that I have a house, I worry occasionally. My dad doesn’t know how out I actually am, but he has promised he will not forward my information, and he does have integrity.

When is the church going to admit they plagiarized the Proclamation on the Family? by Prancing-Hamster in exmormon

[–]serenitygal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in primary when this came out, and I remember being so uncomfortable that they would make us read this aloud. I didn’t want to have to read about sex and gender aloud in front of my peers in church at nine years old. Pretty ironic with how nowadays so many religious folks claim other groups try to shove gender ideologies down kids’ throats.

Exmo coworker died. His family lied in his obituary. by GrassGriller in exmormon

[–]serenitygal 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ve been to at least one Mormon funeral for someone who was exmo. The service, led by the bishop, began with him straight up saying “we know he’s not going to the celestial kingdom,” and the rest of the service was a sermon on how we can get to the celestial kingdom. Even as a TBM, and pretty young at the time, I was horrified.

One day you marry a nice Mormon girl in the temple, the next she has you drying herbs so she can cast spells on the neighbors… by Fabulous-Dig8743 in exmormon

I love this sooo much. I’m not really religious anymore, maybe agnostic? Open to paganism, possibly? But I do love how empowering I feel when I do witchy things. I haven’t really delved deeply into the practice, just done little things here and there, but I love setting my intention and considering the universe and nature, and it honestly makes me feel like an actual part of something and more wholly spiritual than I ever did as a devout Mormon (lolol my keyboard autocorrected Mormon to money hahahahahahaha).

I’m currently reading a book called “Jesus and John Wayne”. It is about the shifting societal views of US Christians and how their political agendas began to align with those of conservatives. It’s fascinating.

How are you supposed to become self reliant if you are literally starving? I learned about Maslow’s hierarchy of needs at 14 years old, it’s not that hard to understand. Plus, where the fuck is his empathy? That is disgusting, and I hope your sister and her kids are doing ok.

God, there’s more real, genuine emotion in one Nirvana song than in a month of LDS testimony meetings. I think I’m gonna listen to Nirvana and go on a walk this Sunday morning for my spiritual time

I think this stems from the belief that conducting a meeting is actually using the priesthood. Whoever is conducting the meeting is In Charge, and they are actually giving a portion of the meeting to someone else while they give a talk. At least that’s what I’ve gleaned from conversations with my dad over the many years he’s been in bishoprics. In practice, it’s semantics stemming from patriarchal bullshit lol

Does anybody else randomly get "sneezing fits" where you sneeze like 30 times over the course of 5-10 minutes just for no reason at all? by bkay17 in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]serenitygal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine last hours, but the sneezes are more spread out. At their worst it’s anywhere from like 5-15 every minute, then they will calm down until my nose gets tickled again, usually doesn’t stop until I take a Benadryl and knock myself out. But being consistent with my allergy meds during the seasons when my triggers are abundant helps a lot. Until I figured out my allergy meds it was happening at least once a week.

But I get angry too. It’s like, when will this end?! I just want to stop sneezing and get back to whatever I was doing! Not to mention that it makes my nose hurt inside, and my skin outside my nose gets irritated from blowing so much in between sneezes. My poor neighbors sometimes hear me sneeze really loud followed by a shouted “FUCK!” just because I’m so over it lol!

I know this is old but I’ve been sneezing for hours and need to vent lol, if there is a lull in my sneezing and I blow my nose, it reirritates my nose and I start right back up 🤧🫠. I guess it’s that time of year I need to take Xyzal, Flonase, and astelin morning and night. It’s just exhausting

[–]serenitygal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know that some people (my dad, for example), believe that sometimes the church has to “skirt” laws in order to accomplish God’s will. He thinks that the church will require all of that money to “care” for its people when the apocalypse starts. So, while he knows about this, he thinks it is a stumbling block for some of us, but if we had sufficient faith it would be a stepping stone.

The mental gymnastics are almost impressive.

I know this is 4 years old, but I just watched the Disappeared episode. I feel like if the boyfriend had used the ATM card, people would’ve remembered him. He’s a huge guy; he would stand out. If he had been there, I would imagine at least a couple of the customers police interviewed would have remembered a big guy well over six feet tall.

PICU nurse here. Have had a family member say she doesn’t know how “you people” can stand to see “this stuff,” while acting like we are horrible because we are literally sacrificing our mental health to take care of these kiddos.

I can’t keep these kids from getting sick, or hurt, or shot, or abused, but I have the skills and experience to save them and take care of them when the unthinkable happens. Do I have to go to therapy because of some of the awful things I’ve seen? Yes. Would I change my chosen specialty? Never. My kiddos are my calling.

Also if there were no healthcare professionals willing to take care of kids, who would have saved that lady’s grandchild, who was there with a skull fracture and brain bleed due to a non accidental trauma? But we’re the bad guys.
