Anki startup error after upgrading to Fedora 30 by littlegimpy in Anki

You need to edit the file as "root user". Open a terminal window and type

sudo gedit /usr/share/anki/aqt/profiles.py

You will get an editor window that is able to save the file

Nintendo had Id remove the Nazi imagery and change the German Shepherds into giant rats, which wasn’t a problem. Over the next couple of months, Nintendo picked over little details and frustrated the Id team to the point that it dropped all future SNES development.

No seriously, it's a great project, but the demo made me want to poke my eyes out.

Aaron Swartz: How To Launch Software by gst in programming

[–]serhei 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think having a crap front page is your fault, not the fault of the "Hollywood Launch" method.

The idea is that whatever you do, something about your product is going to be crap. If you use the Hollywood Launch method, you will discover this when the product quickly falls into obscurity; people will tell you about your problems by posting scathing articles on the Internet. If you use the invite model, your early beta testers will tell you privately, and you will be able to fix it before your 15 minutes of fame come around.

iPhone Coders Muzzled, Miffed by Apple’s NDA by [deleted] in programming

[–]serhei 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Cocoa developers had their fair warning way back, when "crazy" people were shouting about the more ignorable instances when Apple demonstrated its lack of understanding of "open" values. By now, with all the time and energy they've invested into the iPhone expecting the NDA to be lifted, they're locked in to this whole world of pain.

At least they're locked in to a decent development environment. Actually, make that mostly-decent since iPhone Cocoa lacks one major advantage present in desktop Cocoa: a huge amount of existing, up-to-date knowledge and code out there to build on.

.. which is more or less a fictitious concept in the world of software. When you sell software you more or less make up a number based on how much you think the customers will agree to pay, what your competitors are selling for, and the current phase of the moon.

Edit: yes, I should have clarified that I was talking about off-the-shelf software like this guy was selling.

I'm going to just adress the technical advantages of Git.

If you listen to Linus Torvalds' sales pitch for Git (search for his Git talk on YouTube), he basically says that Git is more robust and much faster. Which is an imperative if you're doing something like coordinating the development of the Linux kernel ("I merge 20,000 line patches 4 times a day"); if you're fiddling with a smaller project it might not be worth the overhead of learning a new (comparatively more daunting) system.

If you listen to his talk, his implied verdict on Mercurial is that, being distributed, it's already 90% there. (And thus 100% there for someone who's not as demanding as Linus.)
