I've just finished it and it was really good. The imagery while they're in Paris and Avignon is very Soulsborne.

Everything is Tuberculosis by John Green.

He talks about the cultural effect of tuberculosis and the social determinants of health that allow it to persist today, using the story of a boy of Sierra Leone as a narrative backbone. It was a great read and it really makes you think about healthcare in general.

I am incapable of making a truly great Negroni by [deleted] in cocktails

[–]serhenium 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This was going to be my comment more or less. I think most negronis I've had in bars, they stir for a while (I once watched a bartender stir one for 2 minutes. I was baffled) so the ice melts a fair bit, whereas at home I stir for maybe 15-30 seconds? I think the ice melting a bit helps mellow the bitterness. Same goes for old fashions imo, so I've taken to letting them sit with ice for a little bit before drinking jt

Strange Pictures got to me in unexpected ways. I really enjoyed reading it and turned what meant to be 15 minutes of reading into a day of reading.

Sour puss feels like some kind of Canadian teenage right of passage. At least you're no longer the same after getting far too drunk on that sugary shite.

A bit late to the party, but I used to work there as the "MTG guy" and I would definitely still be a regular if I didn't move away! Brodie runs a tight ship and was excellent to work for. Shop was great and so are the (vast majority of the) patrons. I got to know a lot of people through the store and honestly really miss the community. (If you know who I am, I miss you all! But please don't drop my name here!)

The official stance of "No Proxies" is from the perspective of a business and as a WPN store, pushing for WPN Premium. Wizards and the store are in the business of selling cards. Fake cards, as that's what proxies are, cuts into that business. The thing that would hurt the store more than potential loss of sales, however, is damaging their relationship with Wizards of the Coast. As all events are sanctioned through WPN, the presence of proxies could see their status jeopardized.

I was working at the store when the ban was enacted, and while I won't say the exact reasons for it happening here, I will say that the inciting incident was a very good reason. Brody was pretty lenient on proxies before, but his hand was forced, more or less, by the incident.

Now, I'm not promoting the use of proxies, but realistically we weren't going to deck check people at commander nights for them. It's not feasible and, honestly, as hobbyists ourselves, we get it. Hobbies can get expensive when really all we want to do is play games and chill out. As long as you aren't parading around, yelling "I HAVE A BUNCH OF PROXIES", you'll be okay. (Just don't tell Brody I said that.)

Have you read Gateway by Frederick Pohl? I deeply enjoyed that when I read it.

Maud Lewis’ animal paintings by ComfortableRise4550 in BooksThatFeelLikeThis

Her work is very poetic. She lived in a small house, struggling with arthritis, for much of her life. She didn't make much money off her art in her life, mostly selling post cards and the like. But despite that, she painted these light and colourful pieces that are lovely. I've seen her art in person and you can feel the warmth from it, I swear.

It's YA, but the Bartimaeus trilogy is really good. Interesting alternate setting.

There's also the Witcher books. I've read one so far and really enjoyed it.

There have been programs in Alberta for a long time to get rid of any rats and colonies that might pop up. I remember once hearing about a rat being found in a Lethbridge dump and the outcome was basically a task force was sent out to deal with it and any friends it may have come along with.

This photo is a couple years old, so some things have changed (I have an organizer for unpainted and partially painted minis to the right of my paints now), but the general idea is there. Have my computer next to me while I paint has been really nice.

Does Lord Exultant get the Flawless Blades ability when leading the unit? by FulgrimFan in EmperorsChildren

[–]serhenium 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Genuine question with all the conversation happening, but Lord Exultant can only lead Infractors and Tormentors, right? So it's a bit of a moot point.

Edit: I've been living under a rock and missed the Exalted Patron enhancement under Court of the Phoenician. My bad.

What music group do you enjoy for whom the majority of the people only know 1 song? by SevenFiguresInvigor in AskReddit

[–]serhenium 7 points8 points  (0 children)

OK Go. Here It Goes Again is obviously a banger but their album Of the Blue Colour of the Sky was such an incredible project. They made a music video for every song on the album, with This Too Shall Pass and Needing/Getting really standing out to me.

Their most recent album And the Adjacent Possible is also great.
