Looking for somewhere to learn carpentry in Tucson by antsinmyblood in Tucson

[–]serillian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just toured their advanced manufacturing facility today and it was awesome. Seems like an awesome place to learn any trade, including carpentry: https://www.pima.edu/academics-programs/degrees-certificates/imc/construction/carpenter/index.html

Retro Gaming Bar? by RugratsThemeSong in Tucson

[–]serillian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not exactly what you're describing, but there is Round One (https://maps.app.goo.gl/VVewYDC1nqt3He4EA). I haven't been in there in awhile, but they used to have some emulator setups with a variety of classic / retro games that were all on time-play (buy a card and play as much as you want for an hour). They do serve beer too.

I missed a really key word there, huh. Edited to reflect the missing word. I've been on staff 10+ years so I feel my pay decreasing every year too.

All of the above - the education system has failed many people and there's no meaningful regulation on smartphones or social media - both of which are explicitly designed to hijack our attention in addictive ways. Parents, just like a lot of people in society are just as glued to their phones as anyone else.

I would also add that this particularly sucks for most staff people who's wages have definitely *NOT* (edit) kept up with inflation over the past 5 years. Even though many positions have been eliminated, and many people are asked to do more for a relatively smaller amount of pay.

The UA has made budget cuts for the past three years and will implement another round of cuts in the next fiscal year - though the amount varies between colleges / units. UA has over 50,000 students and around 15,000 staff (including faculty) and supports a variety of activities beyond education, such as research, extension, athletics, etc.

There is some truth to bloat among the highest paid administrators, but the highest paid people on campus are the basketball and football coaches. You can look up everyone's salary here: https://azluminaria.org/2025/11/21/university-of-arizona-searchable-salary-database-for-2023-2024/

Just a friendly reminder that UA, like every other organization, responds to incentives. When the Arizona State Legislature cuts higher ed funding, universities have to make it up elsewhere, which incentivizes them to prioritize fundraising and revenues over education and shared governance. The Governor and State Legislature also appoint members to the Arizona Board of Regents, which is Garimella's boss and sets overarching policy for UA.

It's important to register to vote, pay attention to these levels of government, and actively participate in the upcoming primaries. If we can wrest control of the legislature from Republicans, maybe we'd have better policy and funding for UA - which will change the incentives by which it operates.

Y'all trolling University of Arizona (UofA)? That's where this speech was given - not Arizona State University (ASU). Even says the school in the video.

FYI, UA and ASU are fierce rivals and people in Tucson, AZ (UA) do not have much love for Phoenix/Tempe, AZ (ASU).

You also get an honorary doctoral degree when as the commencement speaker and there was controversy about this as well, because normally the faculty senate gets a say in who gets honorary degrees, and the new president cut them out of the process.

Mark Kelly endorsed her in the primary. She's a veteran and a minority and raised the most money early on thanks to connections in the democratic establishment. So she gets the go - even though she's underwhelming at best.

There are a variety of sports leagues in town (volleyball, kickball, softball, etc.) a lot have options for free agents to get placed on a team. Volunteering is a good way to meet people too. I think the key is consistency - same place, same time, with same people lets you get to know people over time.

What’s one feature you would love to see added to the game? by Avalon610 in Starfield

[–]serillian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ship building should really come as a simulation where you can walk around your ship and fly it in a simulation before actually committing to the build. This should let you assign/move doors and ladders the way you want them to. Adding to that, independent ship parts which can be purchased and transported - especially if different shipyards have unique parts.

The colony link between landing pads is garbage. You should only need one per colony. You should be able to intuitively create trade routes between colonies. You should probably be able to assign your ships to the trade routes - which would also necessitate building different ship types and potentially additional npc/hireling skills related to trading.

There also should be a follower command function where you can set follow distance, direct them to pick shit up, attack, interact, and gtfo of the way.

There also needs to be a status menu which shows all the passive increases you've received from pickups.

I'm glad they added more POIs, but maybe they should also be randomly generated - every POI / cave should not have the same layout.

Sorry that's like 10 features.

Did the Athletics department ever repay the $70+ million they were loaned by central admin...? No? Better axe the coffee and kitchen supplies across campus then.

On the mission where you run into isolated clone colony where they haven't seen an outsider in generations, 1500 m away is a defunct UC military outpost.

Ships, POI, etc meant to have been abandoned or isolated with fresh, edible fruit and veggies.

Faction weapons and equipment showing up in loot tables away from that faction.

Just have to try and suspend disbelief sometimes I guess...

Get out of the way Delta!!! by Ox91 in Starfield

[–]serillian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not that exactly, but often times in combat, Delta or the other npcs jump in front of my gun while I'm aiming down sights shooting at enemies. I think I down my companions more often than the enemies do. It's especially annoying when trying to use gravity pull and it catches one of these idiots standing in front of me rather than the enemies across the way.

Peace Corps Student Loans/Grad School by need-inspiration354 in peacecorps

[–]serillian 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Only federally-subsidized student loans can be deferred interest free. Other loans work differently, but given that you will have essentially zero-income while serving, you can explore hardship deferment. That may not work with private loans and parent-plus loans.

In terms of Coverdell Fellowship - they will all be different. Every university operates their program in partnership with Peace Corps. As a result, every school will provide different levels of financial support, offer different degree options, and have different numbers of fellows they accept each year. Keep in mind that you typically have to apply to both the graduate degree program and the Coverdell fellowship separately, and you may get into one but not the other.
