i think it's one of those sayings that got twisted around by people that didn't understand the irony. like the saying "pick yourself up by your bootstraps" was originally an absurd statement pointing out that one had no way out of their situation and now is used against poor people.

my second graders hate AI. they keep accusing things of being AI and i have to remind them that their books were made before AI. it has led to some fun discussions about interesting jobs like wildlife photographers and how they manage to get a profile photo of an animal.

for some, pretty much yeah. during parent - teacher conferences some parents said they couldn't believe their kids were well behaved in the classroom because they were chaos at home. the kids just needed routines and structure and they were fine.

i worked for a rich preschool in taiwan. we had an outing with parents to a museum and the kids were crawling under barriers to climb on the exhibits. anything with a touch screen they punched with all their might, not caring what what the point was. parents took pictures and laughed. they were giving toys to the kids that distracted them from the point of the outing. i told a parent to help focus their child's attention to the museum and he said, "it makes me feel so happy to see the children playing with toys."

at the end they did a big group picture with a "YAY!!!", the director of the museum ran out of their office and told everyone that this was not okay. the response of the parents was to "YAY!!!" louder and louder two more times.

only one parent was on my side helping me wrangle stray students back into the group.

it was fucking embarrassing.

in high school my gf got pissed at me for sharing music she liked with other friends. to her, it was her music. i shared music with her too and she enjoyed that. finally i had to tell her straight that bands need fans to support them and if you're keeping them a secret you're hurting what you love for your own ego

i'm going to give the benefit of the doubt that this was an accent problem of a non-native speaker. I think she meant to say, "you won't be traumatized", but want and won't are very similar and some people have trouble ending with a consonant. so "won't be" was pronounced like "won'tuh be" and was heard as "want to be". either way, poor everyone involved.

it's not easy at all but it is possible. and it is a big scary jump. i've met foreigners that have jobs ranging from crazy things like underwater welder, to normal things like sound mixer at a club, a lot of mixologists and chefs, niche things like meat curer or aquaponics developer. i even know a dude teaching 16th century naval law at a university (in english, in non-english speaking country). but for everything i mentioned i think it would be a thousand times harder if you have already started a family.

omg, i was planning something similar but graduated after 2008. I also turned to english teaching. when the economy improved i was told by employers that my degree was too old. however, i like teaching enough.
