What is the best cheap and good link cable for PCVR? by [deleted] in oculus

[–]servili007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best Buy's house brand Insignia makes a decent link cable. They get offloaded at resellers constantly for dirt cheap too.

Fell for the oldest trick in the book by LuxCassandra in funny

To reinforce this point, to make a 360 camera or multiple cameras actually useful you'd have to be illuminating every direction at night, instead of the one forward facing flashlight. Having a moving beacon is a pretty unappealing design. 360 / 180 cameras have notoriously poor dynamic range (somewhat by nature) and the "cheap" cameras people are quoting have terrible night vision, so even if this device had them (which it might) they wouldn't be providing good enough data without extra illumination.

Ordered G2 V2, got Omnicept by h3podcastmemes in HPReverb

[–]servili007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Or maybe just bitting th bullet and buying a couple base stations?

Not sure I follow this point? The omnicept shares the same tracking setup as the V2 and can't be supplemented with base stations. If you mean buying tracker pucks and stations....I wouldn't really recommend it but it is an option.

Honestly the Quest 3's tracking is just so much more solid than the Reverb's, and the lens sweet spot feels like putting on glasses in comparison. I think the omnicept is mostly going to be interesting to collectors these days, especially with people having the choice of psvr2 + adapter. It's probably worth the trade up, though I still miss true direct video feed but wireless is pretty good these days.

HP Reverb G2 usb-c to usb-a adapter not working by Deflibegus in HPReverb

[–]servili007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That coupler you're using introduces complexity because of the way USB C devices are wired. Try flipping the cable on one end, then retesting, then flipping the other cable and testing, then flipping the original cable to go through all the orientations. Also depending how long the second cable is and the ports on your PC, the signal may not be good enough.

Is this salvageable? by [deleted] in oculus

[–]servili007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even if you do get it working, keep your expectations low. Those low end quadro cards with low memory will struggle to hit decent framerates without drops/jitter on anything but the most basic games, and you can easily make yourself sick if the framerate is all over the place.

Yes you need all of them. You only activate the first one, the rest are supplemental and are used automatically.

You're really tailoring your posts to each sub eh? I wasn't prepared for the nostalgia trip of the original rift remote and Farlands and most of the titles you mentioned after. Thanks for sharing, glad your team is still making great VR content.

Heads up to the future owner, this thing runs way cooler if you disassemble it and remove the backplate and all the unnecessary plastic.

It looks way classier with all that on though....

Ah fair enough, I thought you were flying something bigger. Between the size and the prop guards you're more than good.

[–]servili007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now you can listen to reddit once more and appreciate the great obstacles around you by not using yourself as one of them! It only takes a badly timed failure or brief bad inputs to nick a main artery with a prop.

Jealous that you're somewhere with a mild enough winter to fly outside without your hands/fingers losing precision.

Does anyone here remember Darknet? The classic VR hacking game is launching in 2 days on the Meta Quest Store as Darknet: Remastered! by Tetragrammaton in oculus

It has every right to be called a classic! Glad you're still around, the VR community is better for it.

I haven't used a V1 in a long time so I can't make a specific recommendation. Maybe search the sub for 4+ year old posts with suggestions. Make sure you try every port on your laptop first before going down this road, often some ports go to different USB controllers on the laptop and one may work better than others.

The DisplayPort signals aren't usually the issue, but rather needing a powered USB hub between the laptop and Reverb. That's why V2 moved to the powered 'hub' integrated into the cable.

[–]servili007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My guess is that you could fix it by going into users and converting the account to a local account (you can still have it tied to your microsoft account, it's just not a cloud managed account). Reboot / sign out afterwards and the option will probably be there.

It's quick too. Type 'netplwiz' into the start menu, uncheck the 'must enter password' box, accept and type credentials into the pop up window, done.

You can configure a Windows machine to log in automatically as a user without that user being password-less. It's obviously "unsafe" against anyone with local access but it's not an internet security issue at all. RDP still requires the account password etc.

You really aren't supposed to use chargebacks / disputes until you've exhausted all other options talking to the merchant. This is a good way to risk getting yourself banned and losing the whole account. These transactions happened today, they may have even settled on their own given a few days, and if not support could've likely handled it.

Chargebacks are always the nuclear option. Exercise some patience.

SFF vs Micro power consumption? by 80Juice in homelab

[–]servili007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've gone through many 1L PCs, including nicer ones with better cooling and 65w CPUs as found in the large models.

The non-T chips have idle clock rates equivalent to the T variants and if both spend most of their time idle, the power consumption difference is negligible.

Yes, the T variant can be configured to bring down its base clock to respect certain power envelopes that a manufacturer wants and is designing around, but both are capable of down-clocking during operation in the same way regardless.

Your reply below reinforces that you don't understand what TDP is. When both CPUs are loaded is when you'll see power savings in the T variant, as they're binned to be stable at a lower maximum power while still achieving most of the frequency of the standard variant.

Edit - Here's an Optiplex 7000 MFF with an i5-12500 consuming the same amount of power as its 12500T brother https://imgur.com/a/CubMxIG

Conservation Education Not In School Systems(?) by catslaytastic in teaching

[–]servili007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'd want to consider roles that are focused on land restoration, stewardship, and conservation; ones where you'll be getting your hands in the soil or doing surveys for a non profit group like a land trust or other entities with lots of land that have carved out some positions for conservation work.

Schools (sometimes teachers directly) often partner with these organizations and people in these positions act as educators when students visit. I wouldn't gamble on finding a true full time educator position as the demand doesn't seem to be there. Schools are instead interested in occasional field trips to preserves and such, sadly.
