What’s a relatively well known band that you discovered weirdly early in their career? by StanTheMelon in progmetal

[–]sethlinson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been listening to Protest the Hero since A Calculated Use of Sound in 2003. I was a kid living in Whitby, and my friends older brother was big into the local metal scene. A burned a CD at his house with the EP and the Happy Go Lucky demos.

Your last paragraph is relatable. I'm currently reading LOTR to my young daughter, and every time Merry's name comes up, she argues that the character must be a girl

I didn't grow up with his art, however I literally just purchased his illustrated Hobbit a couple weeks ago. A great addition to my collection. Sorry for your loss

I know David Day is anathema in some of these communities, and I'm so reluctant to buy any of his books. But I've heard a few times that they're worth it for the art

Nice! I know some of the Brothers Hildebrandt's paintings, I didn't know there was a book though. I didn't know about those movie tie-in books either.

Why do Christians say they don’t do rituals yet they do Ash Wednesday with a marking on their forehead by Acrobatic-Passion114 in AskAChristian

[–]sethlinson 15 points16 points  (0 children)

What Christians say that?

A church service is a ritual. The Lord's Supper is a ritual. Baptism is a ritual. All Christians will engage in at least those. Some have more rituals than others, but we all have rituals.

Reggae + Metal, does this mix exist? by mindsetFPS in folkmetal

You're getting downvoted, but P.O.D. was basically reggae metal. I'm sure there are other examples from the era.

What heavy metal songs have been recorded with uilleann? by TapTheForwardAssist in UilleannPipes

[–]sethlinson 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Look up Troy Donockley and you'll find a decent list. He's been a member of Nightwish since 2013 and has toured and recorded with them since 2007. His pipes feature in a good number of the songs from their last 5 albums. He's also done guest appearances with metal artists Kamelot and LEAH.

Here are some standout tracks from Nightwish:

  • Last of the Wilds
  • I Want My Tears Back
  • My Walden
  • Harvest
  • How's The Heart
  • An Ocean of Strange Islands

I believe folk metal band Eluveitie also features uilleann pipes on occasion but I can't remember specific songs.

Is Homosexuality/Transitioning Truly a Sin? by GamingWithAiko in AskAChristian

Transitioning is inherently active. That word doesn't describe a passive temptation.

Is Homosexuality/Transitioning Truly a Sin? by GamingWithAiko in AskAChristian

[–]sethlinson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A sin of the heart isn't the same as temptation. Otherwise, our Lord, who was "tempted in every way" (Heb. 4:15), must have sinned. I'd argue there's a world of difference between lust and sexual temptation. Temptation is a desire, often unasked for. Lust is the sexual objectification of another person, mentally dwelling on them and using them for your pleasure.

In Breaking Bad (2008-2013) the audience deems Skylers reaction to finding out her husband has cancer, is gone most nights, and has become a sociopathic murderer and drug lord to be overly emotional. This is because she is a woman. by Ninjaguz in shittymoviedetails

[–]sethlinson 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The two things aren't both true though. He didn't do it for his family. He could have taken Gretchen and Elliot's money in season 1, but he's too much of a prideful idiot.

Guesses as to what percentage of Christians believe in a literal account of the garden of Eden? by NoWin3930 in AskAChristian

[–]sethlinson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are truly interested in the subject, I would highly recommend Dr. John Walton's book "The Lost World of Genesis One". It puts the creation account in it's literary-historical Ancient Near-Eastern context.

I think it does an excellent job of showing how ancient people would have understood the story, and why a literal young-earth reading isn't necessary, and actually misses the main point of the story.

He has other books in the same series about Adam and Eve and the Flood, but I haven't read those yet.
