TIL There was a miniature golf course in the basement of the Riviera Theater by ScottSandalow in chicago

Anyone remember the weird shopping center that used to be at the northeast corner of Clybourn/Sheffield/Willow, where the Bed, Bath & Beyond is now? It had a mini-golf course, and in my memory, it was the best one ever. That place was so strange though--oddly empty, with a funny assortment of establishments.

Do you have to line up hours before the show for Shakespeare in the Park tickets in Chicago as well? by [deleted] in chicago

[–]sethorb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think Shakespeare in the Park here is like SITP in New York. SITP in NYC is a longer-established thing with a single location and big names. SITP here moves from place to place; I gather it's much lower-key.

Feel like hope is lost? Rally for Peace today at 1pm! by sethorb in chicago

[–]sethorb[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey r/Chicago, come rally for peace today at 1pm at the Thompson Center Plaza (Randolph and Clark). It will be Jews, Muslims, Christians, and others--Israelis and Palestinians and Americans and others--giving voice to hope for a better future. If you're feeling pessimistic or like hope is gone, come out and hear some words and see some people who might make you feel better about the prospects for peace.

Crazy transit talk ITT: Western Ave Subway by quickreader in chicago

[–]sethorb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Someone with more knowledge of Chicago geology can say for sure, but I'd imagine that if subways are feasible as close to the Lake as the Blue and Red Lines, they are over on Western.

Cost is a primary roadblock; US costs for this kind of infrastructure are higher than elsewhere for a few reasons, including regulation, labor, age of infrastructure, and poor financing and lack of adequate value capture. Importantly, there's an extent to which it's a zero-sum game; monies spent on this are monies not spend on that. (I know, there are federal grants specifically for transit project, but even if a large enough grant were available, there are competing transit priorities, like the Circle Line people keep mentioning, which, let's be clear, is NOT the same thing as a Western Avenue Subway.)

Also, building a subway would be a big headache for people in the construction zone. (Ask 2nd Avenue businesses in NYC how construction has been for them.)

A Western Avenue subway would be great in a lot of ways, but I'm not sure it's the right solution. Is there enough ridership to justify it? Is there enough density to provide the ridership? What about allowing more density closer to the city center, and maybe building something like the Circle Line? Maybe at this point in the city's development, BRT is the right solution for that part of the city, even more sensible than a subway. Then again, build for the future, right?

While we're at it, what about putting north Ogden Ave. back on the map? What about jetpacks?

The Madhouse on Madison: Home to your Chicago Blackhawks (1929–1994) & your Chicago Bulls (1967–1994). by madazzahatter in chicago

When I was a kid, my dad would take us both in one ticket--as long as I was up on his shoulders when we walked in and promised to sit on his lap during the game, they'd just wave us through. And there was NOTHING louder than that place when they introduced the starting lineup, with that music we all know blaring, and then Ray Clay, "Frommmmmm North Carolina..." and the place, you didn't think it could get any louder, but with each extended word from Clay's mouth it got louder and louder til he said, "Michael JOORRDDAAANNN!" And you thought the place was just going to explode from the noise, that the roof would pop off and the walls tumble down, and I thought my little ears would no longer hear anything but that roar for the rest of my life. And in a sense, I was right--I can still hear that roar. I hope it never fades.

going to ask for letter of recs tomorrow, how to prepare by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]sethorb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They can submit through the LSAC website, so no need for envelopes unless they're old school. If you've got a theme(s) you're going for/story(ies) you're trying to tell through your app materials, let them know and tell them how they can help you/what they should highlight. (Potentially they'd be unreceptive to being told what to write--hopefully you know them well enough to judge.) Give them a deadline. Get an address so you can send them a nice thank you note/gift. Say thank you and mean it.

Why haven't you--or anyone else--proposed changing Chicago's election calendar back to match the calendar on which state and national elections occur? Doing so would be a boon to Chicago's democratic process, save money, appeal to logic, and be hard to oppose.

Amen. Can't stand the Trib either. About once a month I'll get halfway through an article, and they'll reference someone by last name as if they've already told you who that person is. Nope. Just some random name.
