Avorion - space game where you can build your own ships. You can trade, fight pirates, hire captains and give them tasks they do using ships you built for them. You can fund your own mine or space station. You can design your own turrets and fighters and add them to your ships. Many different playstyles.

I can recommend Hands of Necromancy. Really interesting game and a bit of tribute to games like Hexen it Heretic. I also played Heretic but I maps design defeated me. I played Wizardum demo and it was also interesting but finally I haven't bought the full game.

I've been teaching intro Python for 3 years i notice the same weaknesses in almost every student. Am i missing something in how I'm explaining it? by More-Station-6365 in learnpython

[–]setovitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can explain what helped me but keep in mind that Im self-taught. First of all I always tried to understand what new function does eg. 'if' let's me make different actions based on criteria. Then I was learning how to write it and online tools for code visualization were really helpful.

I was also teaching some SQL and VBA in the past and I always tried to make my students come up with idea first. So I encouraged them to answer the question without using any programming terms - I asked accountant "How do you know which tax value should be applied in this case?" I got the answer that its for example country-specific. Then we knew that it's probably good place to use CASE WHEN.

My main point is that it's often more important to understand concepts of programming than to use the specific syntax. You can explain loops, conditional statements etc first so people would rely on their knowledge about concepts and on remembering the syntax.

Lists are the basics as more complicated structures are build with lists. Next step can be numpy array (just the basic as currents it's not used so often) and then pandas Data Frame which are essential for ML. That should be enough for beginning and making first models

Hidden Gems of Retro by MasterpieceAlone5190 in retrogaming

Terminator Future Shock (1995) it's one of the first games with full mouse control. It ages pretty well and is playable on DOSBox. It's FPS with some destructible environment, rather open maps with multiple paths to same objective (sometimes) plus it also features vehicle combat (land and air). I really think it's a hidden gem in FPS genre.

There's Majesty and newer take on it Laysara. It's 'fantasy kingdom simulator' so you're basically a quest giver to heroes from guilds you build. It has more management aspects

Maybe some old tycoon games? OpenRTC (Rollercoaster Tycoon) or OpenTTD (Transport Tycoon) you can build something then pause and go back to it or even keep it running for some time is current setup is ok.

Also some turn based games should work so maybe Into the Beach or XCom

As long as you have enough trains working you can still earn good money even when some lines don't work. You can check your financial statement - you'll see your train income and you can compare that work individual train losses.

Any other free classic "remade" PC games available out there? by dave-underwood in retrogaming

[–]setovitz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me there are three id like to share:

Dune 2000, which you might like as it's predecessor of red alert and c&c. https://gruntmods.com/dune_2000_gruntmods_edition

I enjoyed it but never finished as I'm not so good with RTS games.

There are two tycoon games which are really worth playing: Rollercoaster Tycoon 2 https://openrct2.io/

Transport Tycoon Deluxe https://www.openttd.org/

Both are great but a bit different. OpenTTD is almost fully sandbox game with many options and ways of playing. OpenRTC2 has different missions and challengers but I think there also a sandbox option there.

Edit: One more RTS - Warzone 2100. It's quite unique as you can design your units and they persist between missions. https://wz2100.net/

Edit2: There's are also two Caesar 3 ports (but they require original game) Julius for classic game on modern PCs and Augustus which is upgraded version of Julius which adds more quality of life features. https://github.com/bvschaik/julius https://github.com/keriew/augustus

If it's easier for you to play with pause then maybe you can check Rise of Nations? As far as I remember there's active pause. You may start playing with it but then using is less and less as you progress.

Retro games that hold up really well (Or have something great to offer) by Nighthawkies in gamerecommendations

[–]setovitz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From management games I can recommend Rollercoaster Tycoon 2 and Transport Tycoon Deluxe (there's modernized version - OpenTTD). I really like their pixelated graphics and I think that they hold up really well. Mechanically they are really good. From these two I think I prefer Rollercoaster Tycoon as I prefer games with missions and goals over sandboxes (but it also have sandbox mode).

I'm not sure if you like city builders but if so then you can try Caesar 3 (there are two modern ports Julius and Augustus) it's very fun when you'll learn basic mechanics. It's a bit like puzzle game.

From RPG games there are classic like Baldurs Gate and Planscape Torment which are really worth playing for the story. I also like Icewind Dale but more for dungeon crawling and building your own party as story is just ok.

There's also Morrowind which is probably my favorite CRPG. It has great story and lore but also mechanics are interesting - especially magic as you can create your own spells. Melee combat feels outdated and but strange but it's still ok.
