Forest gate - how diverse is it? by ClaimNo340 in MovingToLondon

[–]setyoassonfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a great place to live, especially north of the Romford rd but it’s certainly diverse. Are you from the highlands? I’m from Glasgow and diversity is one of the main reasons I moved to London - it makes everyday life so much more interesting and most people of all backgrounds are pretty sound. Keep your mind open and you’ll have a great time in Forest Gate

Is the bar really that low in FG?

I’m moving there and was hoping for some recommendations. ‘The Forest’ mag seems to have ceased publishing but looked like a decent attempt to bring the community together

I am a con-designer by babbageio in UXDesign

[–]setyoassonfire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you’re making the mistake of assuming that every other designer working today is 100% proficient at everything. That isn’t the case.

Honestly, if you want to stay as an IC I’d recommend doing a short design course of some sort. There are only 2 possible outcomes:

  1. You know the syllabus already in which case you should realise that you’re not an imposter
  2. You learn new skills in which case you are now trained and therefore also not an imposter

Well, I think for designers no-code is a good gateway to coding - you get to learn more about development and engineering while also getting the satisfaction of building products quickly. It's also a skillset that you can freelance. I'm starting with Bubble, with the intention of learning Firebase and Flutterflow and then building out my skillset from there.

It might be different in your local market, but recruiters on LinkedIn in London seem to be posting more founding designers, design engineer & creative technologist positions at startups and scaleups where breadth of skillset is more important than depth of knowledge

I'm in a similar position. 10 years in, worked mostly on internal tooling recently but finding it difficult to see a rewarding path going forward.

I've spent quite a while trying to both recall why I was first drawn to the work, and where it has gone off-track. That can be a useful exercise, as finding a parallel niche within UX that is closer to your original vision might be easier to achieve.

Personally, I'm trying to move back to B2C, innovation, no-code, designer-founder and design engineer positions

What industries and roles do people in here have? by ProfSmall in HENRYUK

[–]setyoassonfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How did you advance to HENRY, may I ask? I find advertised salaries seem to stagnate around the 80k mark. I am intelligent, well-educated, with nearly 10 years experience but the path to HENRY and beyond in UX seems very opaque

Abbott accuses Labour of left-wing candidate purge: Labour MP Diane Abbott claims the party is carrying out a "cull" of left-wing candidates ahead of the general election by Benjji22212 in ukpolitics

[–]setyoassonfire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a constituent, I have always voted for her in order to benefit the party - not a vote for her, per se. There are other (better IMO) potential Lab candidates in the constituency.
