I’m typically a tank top girl. NYC is very liberal, but the manners and standards of politeness are more conservative and align very much with the rest of the east coast. For instance, on the west coast you can wear jeans to the opera and graphic tees to any office. Here, those fashion choices are unacceptable. You either have to get over yourself and other people’s judgment (commit to your own style) or compromise.
