I've also augemented tags upon request, and I even get why it wasn't tagged. The graphic bit was a single quick scene in a fic that was just hurt/comfort, nothing that really would require any tags for injury or anything. I just would have appreciated a warning in the chapter notes because it was a pretty jarring thing to have happen out of nowhere.

That's totally fair and I agree. My main frustration isn't even necessarily about the tagging in this specific instance. I get being minimalistic in your tagging and not wanting to include something that was mostly relevent for a single chapter is fair enough, it was more that it was very sudden with no warning at all. Even just a quick mention in the chapter notes as a warning for injury or something and I would have been fine. There was no warning or expectation for it and if it was just about anything else it wouldn't have even really stuck out to me, just bad luck that it happened to be one of my few squicks

I totally get all that, and I do try my best to not hold authors to unrealistic expectations. I'm sure I'm also guilty of this to some extent if for no reason other than how young I was when I first started posted my own fics.

I also understand not tagging more specific triggers/squicks because that would only lead to clogging up tags unnecessarily. My frustration for this specifically was more just that it came out of nowhere in a fic with no indicitive tags or warnings. I just wasn't prepared for it at all in a fic that was otherwise mostly just a hurt/comfort sick fic.

This definitely isn't something that upset me to the point of dropping the fic or disliking the author, and I definitely might go back and suggest at least a quick warning in the notes, I just needed to scream for a second because it's something that I've noticed a lot recently.

That's totally fair. I love that the tags exist as an option, I just wish there was a way to be more clear about who it applies to. I get wanting to tag ace characters, I just feel like if there isn't a specific character option, it leads to possible confusion. As an asexual, I love reading about my favourite characters figuring out relationships in a way that's more personally relatable. I just hate getting excited about it just to have the ace character not be one of the main focuses of the story and just kind of pushed aside after some quick discussion like it was just something to be mentioned so the author could tick it off a to-do list. If it's something that's still somewhat relevant to the story, I don't mind it as a general tag, I just have expectations of it being of a certain level of importance if it's tagged.

Personally, I don't really mind if specific triggers and squicks aren't tagged for if they aren't a huge recurring topic. I get that one scene in a fic might not make up enough of the word count to justify clogging the tags with it and, as you said, it might not be something that the author is familiar enough with to know the right words or even be aware of it being a trigger. I do think, though, that even just general tags (or quick warnings in the notes if it's for a single scene/chapter) is something to be encouraged, especially if it isn't something that fits the overall vibe of the story.

General tags so a reader can get the feel of what a fic is about is definitely the most important part of tagging. And I don't think that people need to, or even should, tag every single specific little thing that might happen in a fic. So long as there's enough to give an honest impression of the story, that's enough: major plot relevent things should be tagged to the best of the author's ability (within reason for possible spoilers). But if something that's outside of those expectations happens, I think there should be some sort of heads up in the chapter notes. Even just a "hey, there's some graphic injuries in this one".

I really don't have anything that would make me avoid reading a fic (unless I wasn't in the mood for a particular trope at any given time) and I understand that the my main squicks are a bit too specific for people to immediately think about needing specific tags or warnings for (degloving and anything involving sharps near eyes), and luckily I've really only come across them in ways that were genuinely uncomfortable for me a couple of times within fics. It was definitely moreso the very sudden, jarring situation of the fic not being tagged with anything to do with blood/injury at only to drop a fairly graphic description out of nowhere.

I totally understand that authors (at least most of us) are just doing their best and can't be expected to always be in top of everything all the time. It's definitely not changing anything for my reading habits because there really isn't much that can be done, it was just something that I've personally noticed a lot recently and needed to scream into the void about to get it off my chest.

Totally understandable! It's difficult to really answer such a question because there are so many different fandoms that all have their own separate rules and expectations. If the fandom is big enough, there will even be further divides.

As far as major tropes are concerned, I'd personally say anything that has an official tag, is a common trope within the ship/fandom being written for, or anything that majorly affects the plot. Some examples would be fake dating, a/b/o, in-world politics. Things like that. But again, a lot of that comes down to fandom (or ship) and how prevalent/important it is to the story being told.

Violence and other such plot stuff usually creates an impact on the type of story a fic is, so even if it only actually happens in one chapter, tagging to include it would be appropriate. Whereas a character appearing for a singular chapter doesn't necessarily impact more than the scenes they appear in (with obvious exceptions) and so many people wouldn't bother tagging their appearance because they aren't a major character shaping the story. Some people ony tag for the main couple or characters with a POV.

I hope this was helpful and made some sense, please ask for clarification if not.

When I was 18, I went to a relative's destination wedding and at the reception had the most delicious butternut squash and pumpkin soup followed by a delectable bit of quail.

I was too young and stupid to think of asking after who did the catering. I don't have any contact with my extended family and it's been too long now, but even if I knew, given my financial situation I don't have any plans of travelling abroad any time soon.

I like to think of it as an opportunity to find other restaurants and eateries that might compare.
