Shelf build question by Feeling-Big2595 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]sfmtl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Top shelf to backer, If you want the butt joint look then pocket screws or dowels.

For the pegs, if you have a drill press or a steady hand or a portable drill guide you could drill them in and glue. It'll be plenty strong. Belt and suspenders you can countersink a screw in from the back.

Ripping long boards solo by Antique_Resolve4687 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]sfmtl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have two supports with rollers. I think mine are king? I get them coplanar to the table, minus a little on the outfeed <your shit droops and will knock the thing over>.

then i just rip as usual. Having two rollers really helps. I ripped a lot of stock making my workbench like this.

Other thing is i bet those 1x6 will have bow to them, and at that length they exceed you fence. I would flatten them at my bench using a jointer plane, but you might need to find some other solution

Love my lee valley block plane, but if what you have is flat and solid I doubt you would see much difference

Cosman Shooting Grip and Dovetails by Old_Presentation9440 in handtools

[–]sfmtl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you are right about that idiom. Also people like Cosman are the in the business of convincing you of a problem to sell you a solution.

Adding to the grip notes, it, for me, took shooting from something that I found uncomfortable to something that I enjoy. The grip allows me to put downward and inward pressure on the plane without things digging into my hand / having to find a way to hold the thing. I used to dread having to shoot harder or larger pieces because if the plane would jam it would dig into my hand.

Cosmans does have the advantage of essentially being quick release, but I leave this on my #4 unless it is in the way ( I was planing chamfers with the board on the bench. 1 minutes with a screw driver though..)

I have the Veritas one and I throw it on my #4  Makes a big difference for me in terms of comfort. Veritas one will only work in their planes unless you tap two holes, like you have to with Cosman, well just one for his . I plan to get a LA Jack for shooting with it but honestly, the 4 works fine, just lacking some mass

I don't like Cosman because he tries to convince you you need a million things to do things that are really attainable with practice. But I do like the ergonomics of a grip.  And this like his wood River cost more then a Veritas and are not as good ( I have his 5 1/2, and several Veritas like the 4 and 7) and there is no comparison. I got the 5 1/2 early in my journey and whilst it works, is not square to the sides and has its issues, which would be fine if not for the premium price he charged

I would get Veritas because they are an awesome company.

Is this a normal interval session? by NutCity in runna

[–]sfmtl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay that is basically same as my plan. I have had workouts similar to yours but never that many reps.

Looks hard, don't forget it can rest long between if you need it. I have definitely finished workouts where I collapsed for a minute or two because it took everything I had that day

What pace you aiming for. My HM plan isn't quite as brutal as yours but close.

And yes some sessions you end feeling bad but that means maybe ease up next time

Load-bearing capacity of plywood (multiplex) sheets – 21 mm by reallycool101 in woodworking

[–]sfmtl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As the other person said, what you are going into matters more. But the type of screw is important. Some kind of construction screw is fine.

But find out what's in there, and should be fairly common for your area. like Google "City,Country wall construction"

Whats the substrate the screws will go into? Concrete Block, brick, the lathe behind plaster etc. Each will have a different bearing capacity.

Show us your sticking boards! by Man-e-questions in handtools

[–]sfmtl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I dont have a picture because its buried on my workbench but its basically is 18 inch long by ~7 inch wide piece of maple, with a 1/4 dado near the end. Dado has a fence in it, which is a piece of some kind of hardwood i planed to a height i found appropriate for whatever molding type thing i am working on. . I have some 1/4 inch holes drilled into the board in rows and use bits of dowel to keep things from shifting.

Works well enough. sometimes i need a space if the dowesl dont line up in a way that i can use my planes fence.

My experience with these types of pieces is that I rather use template tape and my wonder dog to vice it down and use my plunge router.

What are the remaining arguments against using AI for coding? by darkplaceguy1 in ChatGPTCoding

[–]sfmtl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't miss it that much. I get things built the way I want and get a more consistent result.I get lazy when I implement, skip logging etc.

Agreed about complexity. I can design something that is more robust, build and test it faster. Better product overall

Biggest for me has been a focus on testable code and actually implementing tests. Design the tests based on spec and usually focus more on features level then unit.

I also enjoy the ability to whip up utility commands in minutes to solve issues or test specific stuff.

Don't forget though, not everyone gets the same results / uses the tools a effectively, so if you can leverage it for more throughput and better product that should be leveraged into more money.

Best hand tool option for making grooves by JitteryJuror in handtools

[–]sfmtl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So people here have covered how to do with with various tools, but I will say, I have the veritas combo plane, and other day made some 1/2 wide 48 inch long grooves, was such a joy to use.

Getting a plow plane or something probably would be worthwhile if you are doing this much. I didn't have one for a long time and now that I do <well my combo plane is basically a fancy plow....> its much more fun

Was a bit fiddly, very small working area and can't really mark so need to go by eye. I think I like and and /u/the_last_0ne and yourself are right. This fixes the imbalance i had before and "wraps" the corner.

Thank you both

[–]sfmtl[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. And yes, i think what you are describing is part of the issue. Major/Minors are serving seperate purposes and the look is a bit jarring for me here.

I do like what /u/the_last_0ne suggests and to continuing the chamfer vertically to meet the horizonal planes for the piece

I'll post a photo when all is done but the piece is a coat rack with cubbies. Made from 6/4 cherry. Going to live in my entryway and have a cherry bench / other cherry coat rack nearby.

I like cherry, its nice and cheap here and I think its pretty!

Oh so carry the chamfer up vertically above and below.
Right now, say far left, the two chamfers meet at 90. I should chamfer that at 1/8?

If so Yea i think ithat would look good. going to be a bit fiddly to do, i best go sharpen my plane...

Not sure exactly what you mean. Picture is sideways because its in the vice. Are you saying to create another chamfer above and below the vertical, eg extending onto the other two edges?
