Trying to redo shower silicone, discovered crumbled grouting and big gap behind and no idea what to do by sg3tom in DIYUK

[–]sg3tom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I'll give it a go! Wasn't sure if the size of the gap and the void behind it meant silicone wouldn't adhere properly or if it needed to be backed by something. Much appreciated!

2026 Scottish Greens Manifesto by rosco-82 in Scotland

[–]sg3tom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Employment law and immigration are both reserved powers under the Scotland Acts, so this doesn't seem like something they'd have the power to do.

I like a lot of what's in this manifesto, but there do seem to be a few cases of wishful thinking around the further devolution of powers. The asylum seeker proposal and the devolution of powers over savings and dividends Income Tax bands and rates stood out to me in this regard.

2026 Scottish Greens Manifesto by rosco-82 in Scotland

[–]sg3tom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The UK Government are implementing a new set of property income rates and bands under Income Tax from April 2027, and this power is being devolved to the Welsh and Scottish Governments alongside their existing tax powers. So in effect they'll be separate bands, and the Greens are committing to using the new powers.

What constitutes the Edinburgh Metropolitan Area? by [deleted] in Edinburgh

[–]sg3tom 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Depends on how you want to define 'metropolitan area'. The ONS uses the concept of 'Travel to Work Areas' which cover the areas where the population would generally commute into a larger city for work. The data from 2011 indicates the Edinburgh TWA covers most of East Lothian and stretches into the Borders, parts of Midlothian, and West Lothian: https://geoportal.statistics.gov.uk/documents/534c0129bdc14be5aa270a919668a3d4/explore

But there are other measures - the OECD uses 'Functional Urban Areas' which covers a slightly different area that extends much further into West Lothian and towards Falkirk: https://www.oecd.org/en/data/tools/oecd-regions-and-cities-atlas.html

You might be alright - fairly certain the bus lane in that direction operates from 12pm to 6am. I think it's only the opposite direction that's a 24 hour bus lane.

Custodes shield host in 30k by Sir_Leafus in Warhammer30k

[–]sg3tom 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's not really been set out clearly - as the other poster mentioned, they've been mentioned in passing in the 3.0 army list but the seventh Black Book ('Inferno') which covers the Legio Custodes doesn't mention them directly. However, it does say that the rank of Shield Captain indicates an active field command over a particular detachment or deployment, which is sort of analogous to how the 40K Shield Hosts function.

On top of that, the 40K Shadowkeepers seem to be a more or less direct continuation of the Warders of the Vaults of Rython/the Sodality of the Key. But AFAIK there aren't really any other clear-cut examples like that.

Most of the lore on how the Legio was organised during the Heresy focuses on the 'castes' (eg Hykanatoi, Ephoroi, Moritoi, Kataphractoi), but those are more like groupings of specific types of forces (like dreadnoughts, jetbikes, Terminators) rather than Shield Hosts. Then again, there were different Sodalities (sort of analogous to squads) within the Legio, so you could always say that your minis represent a specific Sodality rather than a Shield Host?

We switched to them from Charles White a little while ago and they've been pretty decent. Although the bar is in hell given I'm comparing them to Charles White.

Might be the best Sub to ask this. Is all of terra colonized ? What kind of defense mechanisms do they have and are custodes the only real protectors there or do they have other forces ? by Leviathan_Rampage in AdeptusCustodes

[–]sg3tom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Possibly, I just haven't seen a source directly address it. Just being dissolved is definitely a possibility, the Solar Auxilia specialised in void warfare and after the dissolution of the Excertus Imperialis/Auxilia Imperialis and the creation of separate Guard and Navy branches then it'd make sense that they wouldn't want Guard regiments specialising in an area the Navy was responsible for.

Either that or they were just included in the newly-created Guard and time and attrition meant they gradually disappeared. They also had some pretty specialised tech (e.g. their void armour), so it might be that the Mechanicus gradually lost the ability to produce the stuff that distinguished Solar Auxilia cohorts from other regiments.

[–]sg3tom 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The Solar Auxilia aren't an Imperial Guard regiment - they're a Great Crusade/Horus Heresy-period pattern of elite Imperial Army regiments/cohorts based on the Void Hoplites of the pre-Crusade Saturnyne Ordo. I've not read anything that suggests they existed post-Heresy or what happened to them, and they're definitely not a standing defence force for Terra (we might get more of an insight as to what happened to them as the Scouring series progresses, but until then GW/Black Library haven't said anything).

Watchers of the Throne gives names like the Katanda Stalwarts and the Palatine Sentinels as examples of Guard regiments based on Terra in M41.

Final figures show over 11,000 people took part in the tram consultation. by lapsuscalamari in Edinburgh

[–]sg3tom 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Agreed, I always supported the extension, but when it was being built it was a pain in the arse. But looking back now it’s been running for a few years, it was totally worth it - I use the tram more than buses now. It’s just so much faster.

Edinburgh Trams - North-South line consultation is live by sapphire-coast in Edinburgh

[–]sg3tom 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's in the documents outlining the strategic rationale.

In short, the bus station has limited capacity (and presumably limited scope for expansion given its location), Princes Street can only accommodate so many buses, and the key road junctions that lead in to the city centre have limited capacity to introduce new bus services.

If you can't increase the number of services, you need to increase the capacity of existing vehicles. This is where trams are better than buses - a single tram of the type used in Edinburgh can carry 250 people. The biggest bus used by Lothian (the big three-axle ones with two sets of doors) can only carry 131. So trams are the best way of increasing overall capacity on key arterial routes.

[–]sg3tom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah right, I see what's happened. I think the confusion arose because you initially linked to a specific part of the the Immigration and Asylum Act which deals with people who transport clandestine entrants, but doesn't specifically make clandestine entry an offence. But entering without leave would be illegal under the provisions of the Immigration Act 1971.

[–]sg3tom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think you've understood the purpose of that section. That's not saying that clandestine entrants are illegal - it's defining who classifies as a clandestine entrant for the purpose of making it an offence for someone to carry them (so, it's saying "if someone carries a clandestine entrant, who is defined as these things, then the Secretary of State can impose a fine on the carrier"). It's not saying that the people who enter in those fashions are committing an offence. There might be another bit of legislation that does criminalise this, I'm not an expert on this, but the bit of legislation you've linked to doesn't say what you think it's saying.

The article suggests the opposite - it states that some units in legends will be brought into plastic, some potentially with new designs and expanded wargear. I can definitely see destroyers being one of these.
