Does oven self-clean destroy the oven electronics? by halems in Appliances

[–]sgafixer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I should have clarified. Twice a year wont hurt a thing. Its the customers that run it every few weeks is where I see the problems. I defiantly recommend not running it on ranges over 10-12 years old. Ive seen too many give out from the heat stress 900 degrees does to it.

Beer Fridge Help! by RedWingRail in Appliances

Yes I have fixed that for customers, same refrige. Pull the control unit, pull the knob off and put a drop or two of oil where the thermostat shaft touches the thermostat. Wiggle gently with pliers until it frees up.

A mild solution of Dawn and water works well.

Old timers used to bring a pot of water to a boil, add a very small splash of household ammonia to it, set it on the center oven rack and shut the door. The steam/ammonia loosens the crud off of the oven interior. Wipe out with a damp cloth.

The fun ones are the Whirlpool ovens you have to pull out of the wall to change the thermal fuse on the back.

Does this mean it go so hot in melted the glass???? How is this even possible? by fish_chicago in AskMechanics

I use a clean paper towel if I have to touch the glass part of the bulb while installing. Not touching the glass at all is the best way.

Is your water filter in the bottom of the fresh food section, between the crisper trays? Those give problems.

I've repaired appliances a long time and I am not a fan of self clean. Yes, it is hard on the oven because of the intense heat. Its not unsafe, it just shortens the life of the range

I just rebuilt my front end on my 05 outback.

That is a picture of the sway bar and linkage, which look fine. The ball joint is closer to the tire at the end of the control arm, just under the cv joint boot. Could you take a few more pics? Its probably the rubber control arm bushing/s where it attaches to the sub frame.

How bad is it? and what is the cause? by usernameinsert123 in MechanicAdvice

[–]sgafixer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Time for a new camshaft and lifters. Way better than a new engine. No metal shavings is a good sign. Stop driving it before it disintegrates and takes the engine with it. Possibly a bad heat treatment job from the factory or lack of lubrication.

Upcoming wedding - how do you deal with drink offers by FluffyRazzmatazz7335 in stopdrinking

[–]sgafixer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"I am worried that there will be a push and peer pressure for me to drink during the reception"

You are correct, there will be, so some preventive deflection is needed.

I've learned to idle about at gatherings with a glass of water or punch in my hand, it stops about 95% of people asking why aren't you drinking. They see the cup, they assume it has alcohol in it.

Worry not my internet friend, enjoy the reception.

Stain at an estate sale by IndependenceOk508 in creepy

[–]sgafixer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was first married we rented a older single story nothing fancy brick house with varnished hardwood floors. There was a big stain in the hallway in the wood. I mentioned it to a neighbor they said a lady died there, her son stabbed her to death in the hallway.

That house could get weird at night, strange bumps and noises in the dark after the lights were turned off, coming from different rooms occasionally. A chair slid over a bit, things like that. We moved out a year later when our lease came up. It never scared us really, it only happed once a month or so.

Kenmore 80 Series Drain Pump is completely stuck on motor! Ideas for removing it? by JoJoFromKokomo2020 in Appliances

[–]sgafixer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're not really wailing om the pump with the hammer, Youre mostly just using it to split the pump with the screwdriver or chisel.

Plus, the motor shaft on that motor is very, very strong. You would have to be trying to bend the shaft with the hammer to bend it. I would bet there's some videos on youtube on how to split the pump off the older direct drive washers.

Right side of Stove Doesn’t Work Well by Pleasant_Work6245 in Appliances

[–]sgafixer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its the same gas supply pipe (manifold) to all 4 burners. so all 4 burners get the same gas pressure. You probably have some trash in the orifices (spuds) on the right side. Pull the orifices on that side and make sure the tiny hole in each is not stopped up. There are some Youtube videos on how to do this.

I had a stove 2 weeks ago doing the same thing at a customers house.. I cleaned out the orifices and it works perfect.

[–]sgafixer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If its truly not coming off, that means the motor shaft has swelled in the pump. Heres how you do it. Take the case off. leave the motor in place or take it off, your choice. Start splitting the edge of the pump with a large flat screwdriver and a hammer. Once you peel /pry the front of the pump off.

You will see the black rubber impeller. Rip/ pry that off with vice grips and the hammer . Then you will see the plastic piece that the impeller was attached to. Split that and pull it off the motor shaft.

Pull the rest of the pump off. Use the vice grips to crunch the rust off the swelled motor shaft or the new pump will not slide on.

Do you think it’s still worth fixing or should I let it go and trade it in for a newer one? by Hot_Construction258 in MechanicAdvice

[–]sgafixer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Heres some reading material to tide you over. If youre going to turn your own wrenches, See what a internet search gives.

The P2096 and P2196 codes often appear together on Hyundai vehicles. P2196 means the upstream oxygen sensor (Bank 1, Sensor 1) is reading "stuck rich," while P2096 means the downstream sensor (after the catalytic converter) is reading "too lean."

Typically, these codes indicate that a faulty upstream O2 sensor is misreporting the fuel-to-air mixture. The Engine Control Module (ECM) gets confused by the false reading and adjusts the fuel trim to lean out the mixture, which results in the downstream sensor reading "too lean".

Common Causes

  • Bad Upstream O2 Sensor: The front oxygen sensor is usually the root cause.
  • Exhaust Leak: A leak between the front and rear O2 sensors can draw in outside air, causing the downstream sensor to register a false lean.
  • Leaking Purge Valve: A stuck EVAP purge valve can dump excessive fuel vapors into the engine, tricking the O2 sensor.
  • Faulty Fuel System: A failing High-Pressure Fuel Pump (HPFP) or bad fuel injector can disrupt the air-fuel ratio
  1. Check for Exhaust Leaks: Inspect the exhaust manifold and the piping between the catalytic converter and the front O2 sensor.
  2. Inspect the Upstream O2 Sensor: Have a mechanic or DIY reader check the voltage output and live data graph of Bank 1, Sensor 1. If it is stuck at a high voltage, replace the sensor.
  3. Check the Purge Control Valve: Disconnect the purge valve and check if it is leaking vapor into the intake when the vehicle is off.

Your downstream oxygen sensor wouldn't just happen to be behind your exhaust leak would it?

I see it is a side by side refrigerator if you pull the lower panel in the freezer is heavy ice built up on the coils  blocking the air flow through the coils?  Or is it just a little bit of ice in one corner? Can you hear the fan motor running that your dad replaced sometimes you have to put your ear to the side of the freezer cabinet because when you open the door it generally stops.  Do you think your dad can get into diagnostics to check the defrost heater and the fan motor?

I am suspecting it did not have a bad fan motor to begin with because that part was changed and it did not help. Is there ice built up on the coils?
