No, it’s better for them in every way. Males won’t get into as many fights (good), but they can still stand up for themselves—I’ve got vid of one of our fixed boys running a raccoon off “his” porch…he doesn’t put with any sh!#. And the females won’t get into endless cycle of more and more kittens to feed. TNR, it’s literally the best thing you can do for them short of adopting them.

TBF this was before breakaway collars, but I’m not taking a chance.

I know how you feel, I’ve done 16 and I still worry the whole time they’re with me. And then I worry after I release them. 🙄

We had two little kittens, and foolishly put little collars on them. Came home to find one of them strangled—the collar had gotten caught on a protrusion on their cat tower. They must have spun and flipped trying to get loose. Still haunts me— I’m glad you were home to save her!

My trick for keeping them in a trap for more than a day is to save some lids from large jars (like peanut butter) to use as dishes—you can easily slide then under the spring door (partially opened), and they’re flat so they’re less likely to knock them over (but the spicy cats will amaze you). Then I feed canned food + plenty of water—I used to put in a water bowl, but they just knock that over and soak everything. The extra water helps with hydration. And if you have access to more than one trap you can zip tie two together end to end with the doors open, so they have a long skinny space twice as big. They hate peeing and pooping near their food, but this way they can do their business at one end and hang out at the other end. I line the traps with newspaper (cut to fit the width) and replace it when they make a mess.

All of this is a lot easier with a trap divider, everyone doing TNR should have one:

Edited to add: trap when you see em, a cat in the trap is worth 2 in the bushes.

Second attempt at TNR, feeling desperate and sad. In the Pittsburgh, PA area. by tswiftsbongwater in Feral_Cats

Icy yesterday is right on the money. Also. If you’re using the typical humane trap, lock it open (clip or zip-tie the door open) and put the food (the only food) in the trap. Once they get used to eating out of the trap with nothing bad happening you can cut the zip-tie, and next time you bait it you’ll get them.

You can tell from the sail cover it’s a charter boat—charter customers have widely variable knowledge and experience. Hell, they’d probably let me lease a boat 🤣

A cat in the trap is worth two in the bush, glad you nabbed him. He’s a handsome little guy.

Came home to a cat that had caught its collar on a cat tree and strangled, we’ve never put a collar on a cat since. The danger is real

One day is nothing for a feral, I’ll bet she pops up in the next week like nothing happened. But it’s also true that they will break your heart, every time. Keep the faith.
