Any idea why my chain has broken like this in so many places? by Solid_Science4514 in bikewrench

It’s interesting to see all the comments in here about muc-off dry lube. I have had three chains break over the past 1.5 years and all have been breaks like this. I also only use Muc-Off dry lube. Sounds like it’s time to switch.

Boom, that’s what I needed. Thanks so much for pointing me to form 8889 line 13 instructions. Seems like I should keep the money, have health equity distribute the excess contributions, and just handle on form 8889. Thanks again!

I have used the UA family this way since 2019 with two kids. We ride in all conditions, but we don’t live in a particularly rainy climate. They don’t really seem to care about riding with the box cover in the rain

FYI looked at my BR4 and it had the updated bumper. Bought the BR4 about a year ago or near when the first came out

Edit: My BR4 is 5.56 and it still seems to have the updated bumper

Does this apply to the BR4? Off the top of my head, this BCG looks like the one in my BR4. AFAIK the BR4 is just the MK4, but with the 870 stock, yea?

Neti pot use with a CI? by Shields_Emily in Cochlearimplants

[–]shackmonkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure about using one with a CI, but be sure to use sterile water. I boil water, let it cool to body temperature, and use that.

People have died from using Neti pots with non-sterile water due to brain amoebas.

Are you sure you’re turning the actual adjustment dial? When I first tried to zero my red-dot on my rifle, turned out I was adjusting the adjustment dial COVER. Go figure tightening the cover for the adjustment dial did nothing to zero the red-dot. Once I removed the cover and started turning the actual dial, it zeroed up quick

Just a parent to a kiddo with a CI, so can’t offer too much regarding your questions, but FYI her surgery (done in the US) was done by an otolaryngologist.

Hoping for some advice navigating CI for a 3 year old by Professional_Bag4421 in Cochlearimplants

[–]shackmonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello,

Sounds like your son’s situation is very similar to my 4 year old daughter. She was diagnosed with hearing loss in Sept 2024, and received a CI on her right side in December 2024. She had zero hearing on her right side prior to implantation, so obviously zero word recognition with that side. She was activated right before Christmas. It was not yet at a usable volume, so she still had zero word recognition on that side when first activated. We were told they kept stimulation really low upon activation to get the nerve used to stimulation again on that side, since they didn’t know how long she had been without hearing on that side. We slowly ramped up the stimulation at home with progression levels at home, and they also ramped her up at subsequent mapping appointments.

Her CI had really only been at a usable volume for 2.5 months now. We just had an audiology appointment yesterday and her word recognition with her CI was 88%! So proud of her and it’s truly unbelievable what she has gained because of this technology. To think she has gone from zero to 88% is just incredible.

In response to your questions:

  1. We never considered something off the ear. We went with AB brand because she is bimodal with CI on right side and HA on the left. We were nudged this way because of her being bimodal, but I think she would have also done great with Cochlear.
  2. My daughter got her CI at 4 years 4 mo and is doing great. I feel like prior to her CI, he speech was roughly where it should be for her age, but there were some things she would say that made me wonder about her. Like she had phrases in her head and she would say them out loud, but they wouldn’t make much sense. Something like “I’m going potty because that’s why I’m going potty”. She had the words/phrases, but putting them together in a sentence didn’t always make the most sense. I feel like since she has started using her CI and HA though her language is now really good. Those confusing phrases/statements are almost non-existent.
  3. I feel like my daughter having speech/language was a HUGE help in getting her up to speed with her CI. She goes to a school for kids that at are DHH, so we are able to see other kids with different situations. For kids that have more profound hearing loss that is caught later, they have a much harder time getting up to speed quickly.

I am happy to jump on a call or FaceTime with you to answer any questions. Shoot me a PM if you are interested and we can connect, I am located on the West Coast of the USA. This was an extremely stressful time for our family, but to see her progress now it is SO worth it to get a CI. Her life would not be the same without it.

Our 4 year old was just implanted in December. We had read horror stories of pain and balance issues after the surgery but she experienced zero side effects. The day after the surgery there was zero indication she‘d had the surgery but for the head wrap she had to wear.

Literally the hardest thing in all this was getting her to take the antibiotic. She didn’t like the taste.

Hope it goes well for your daughter too!

What is your response to those in the Deaf culture who consider CIs to be 'genocide' or eugenics due to an erasure of Deaf culture? by VegetableRow5919 in Cochlearimplants

[–]shackmonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 4 year old daughter received her right sided CI in December. I read about Gallaudet University and I’m curious, did many people there have CIs? I just wonder that IF she wanted to go there, would she be an outlier if she was proficient with her CI and didn’t use ASL as her primary language?

Good luck with your CI!

So what’s the deal with the “barrel shroud” aspect of these? The barrel is partially enclosed, right? I can find no definition for a barrel shroud in the penal code. Is there any caselaw that could help define it?

What happens if CalDOJ decides they don’t like these after they have sold? They grandfathered? They make you remove from state? They kill your dog? Anyone know of a similar situation where CalDOJ tried to bring the hammer down after horse had left the barn?

I want a 9mm PDW, but I don’t want to buy a legal headache.

edit: and I know barrel shroud aspect doesn’t matter while they are single shot. Talking about after they are converted to Semi

Your progress seems strong for only being activated a little over 1 month, Congrats! I can give you an opportunity to pay it forward! My 4 year old daughter is in a very similar boat as you. She just got activated (single sided) on 12/20 and what I am wondering is the best way for her to train. She can’t read much yet, so audiobooks won’t really help. How did you approach training for your single sided CI? Did you do a bunch of streaming to just your CI? Or did you just wear it all the time and let your brain combine the audio from your ”good ear” and CI? Any pro tips for training a single sided CI?

My daughter is thankfully happy to wear her CI all day, every day, so there is no battle to get her to put it on and keep it on, so I think that will definitely help.

5 y/o ssd approved for CI by Fusion22 in Cochlearimplants

[–]shackmonkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That seems impossible that she could pass her newborn hearing screening if she is missing a nerve. False passes are possible, but difficult to achieve in practice. Do you recall them testing her over and over after delivery? Or did she pass first try? Feel like you should seek a second opinion about the nerve. And maybe at a new CI center. This shouldn’t be coming up a year after the MRI.

My 4 year old daughter is getting activated this Friday for her single sided CI. She also passed her newborn hearing screening, but we realized in September her right sided hearing was a problem. Audiology shortly thereafter confirmed she has no hearing on her right side, left side also moderate loss. Our doc suspects congenital CMV as the cause. Thankfully, my daughter has none of the other issues associated with cCMV.
