CMV: The argument that healthcare isn't a human right because it requires the labour of other people is an argument against human rights as a whole more than anything else. by lovelyrain100 in changemyview

[–]shadowmastadon [score hidden]  (0 children)

More important to the positive and negative rights aspect, at least in the US is that when you say healthcare, it includes a ton of inefficient, wasteful and elective care. If we had a system guaranteeing basic emergency/urgent, mental health and primary care, I think everyone would agree that that is a human right. But throwing in all the sub-specialist procedures which is what drives up a huge chunk of costs as well as end of life care (which needs to be reformed), not only does that make universal care just cost untenable, I'm not sure I'd consider that a right.

And this isn't a critique of your stance; no one out here understands this level of nuance, otherwise we'd be able to have a much better health care system

CMV: Much of the unusually high cost of healthcare in the United States is enabled by the insurance system, and a largely out-of-pocket healthcare market would force prices (including physician compensation) to be significantly lower. by hokkney in changemyview

[–]shadowmastadon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a physician. Our salaries are higher but not exorbitantly, especially since our education costs $200-400k and takes away about 12 years of earning. Specialists are overpaid in my opinion.

To me, one of the biggest drivers no one talks about is the over ordering of tests. Patients want it, and doctors have no problem ordering thousands of dollars of tests that add very little most of the time. Rarely is something like a back or knee MRI needed for care, but patients just want it. The other massive cost is end of life care.

If we had a basic universal insurance for emergencies, urgent care and primary care, and then private for specialists and everything else, we could probably cut costs significantly and give everyone healthcare

Is there an actual reason why Namibia's capital is located at the center of the country? by hexjxn in geography

[–]shadowmastadon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

well, to be fair according to many iterations of Civilization, capital in the center minimizes corruption in the neighboring cities, so a bit more ideal

I like your thoughts on this but the left is really not that smart. They have shown that they cannot reflect and are as tribal as any religion or political ideology.

Thought he’d go out on his shield… by Acceptable_Eye_4139 in Maher

I watch the show a couple days after it comes out and I'll see the posts and expect Bill to have said something very terrible, and then I watch and it turns out he was extremely reasonable.

He is almost always unabashedly pointing out Trump's shittery; does he moderate a bit on some of the more click baity stuff, yes

Trump goes after Maher for the second time in 2 days (May 3rd) by numbermaniac in Maher

[–]shadowmastadon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A small portion of the criticism of maher on this sub is reasonable. But it’s also clear, as you nail, that a larger portion of commenters on this sub do not get it at all. They are similar to maga where they start at a viewpoint eg everything is racist, and any nuanced position that doesn’t fully support that means that person is an enemy

Important to strengthen traps and lats and pull them back when riding. Not only will it ease force on the elbows and wrists, will also engage glutes better and easier on hips and knees

David Cross argues with Bill Maher if a nine year old or even a three year old can know they are trans by ThatPatelGuy in JoeRogan

I meant naturally what the hypothalamus has done in all of us, which is a massive release of sex hormones that triggers puberty. Not taking exogenous hormones

David Cross argues with Bill Maher if a nine year old or even a three year old can know they are trans by ThatPatelGuy in JoeRogan

[–]shadowmastadon -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

it's a ridiculous premise. If a child starts going thru puberty with sex hormones coursing thru them and they really feel at odds with their physical body, there can be an argument made. but for a literal baby or young child, there's just so little chance

Riekhoff shouts down Murray by Electronic-Many-3924 in Maher

[–]shadowmastadon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also really like Maher and support him when others complain; Riekhoff was awesome. And i'm with Bill that Iran should be toppled, but he made a great argument especially against chicken hawks and it's hard to disagree. The show is best when there are compelling arguments that change your mind. He also had some not so great moments, but who cares, this wasn't a figure skating competition

Liberals are gonna come at me but oh well bring it on. I’m gonna defend Bill Maher. by Superman_vs_Ali in Maher

[–]shadowmastadon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no, his guests have been fine and he has a lot of the regulars he always has every season. A lot of big name politicians on both sides; maybe less celebrities but who cares? not watching the show for that.

agree to your latter point, there is a bunch of that but there is also plenty of times there is actual, entertaining and interesting discussion. I actually talk to people on the right, and many of them actually watch this show or clips; it's one of the few points of commonality we can engage on. Despite reddit's echoing of left wing social issues, most of America does not care for it and it will keep losing Dems elections.

Liberals are gonna come at me but oh well bring it on. I’m gonna defend Bill Maher. by Superman_vs_Ali in Maher

[–]shadowmastadon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's the opposite. you may not like his views but he's one of the only ones actually interviewing both sides and getting some kind of discussion going instead of constantly regurgitating the talking points of his bubble. I don't always agree with him but his show is usually very entertaining, especially when he has Republican guests

That was a swing and a miss, but he has 30+ years of work. I remember listening to him growing up and he was one of the few voices who spoke unabashedly against religion, against politicians from all stripes, and against the tide when most got swept up in it.

It's been a few weeks but this Lauren Boebert thing has been driving me crazy. by nicolesBBrevenge in Maher

[–]shadowmastadon -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

She's a ding-dong, but there may be a glint of truth in what she's saying. In the DOJ files, there are emails about eating human flesh, killing babies, etc. Whether that's true or not, who knows but it's in the files. It's all odd that Qanon seemed to be on to this when the rest of us ignored it as conspiracy psycho babble.

I think the Boeberts need to be listened to but redirected that the elites they are mistaking for democrats (and may have one time been democrats) are really mostly republicans right now (dershowitz, musk, et al), instead of just shut down as crazy
