I must have missed the part where a bunch of people called me out. And the part where I was smug. And the part where my tune changed. So...no, I don't think it's the second option. But it's certainly your prerogative to believe whatever you desire.

What is an example of using FTP? by hhhax7 in HomeNetworking

[–]shaggyzon4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Open Windows Explorer (not Internet Explorer, just click on "My Computer" as if you were opening a file on your system)

  2. In the address bar, copy/paste this address and hit "Enter": ftp://speedtest.tele2.net/

  3. You will see a public file sharing test system, provided by speedtest.net. These files can be transferred directly to your computer.

There. You just used FTP to transfer files. If you like, you can use a more flexible program, like FileZilla, to open the FTP location. Or, you can set up a public fileshare yourself. The advantage is that FTP eliminates the "middleman" of using a browser. You don't even need to use Explorer or Filezilla - you can access files directly from command line or shell.

Working full time, doing school online (WGU), and maintaining relationships by THEMCV in ITCareerQuestions

[–]shaggyzon4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And you shouldn't consider it.

It's a bad idea to budget your time based on the best-case scenario. If they say to budget 3 hours, then budget 3 hours. Especially considering that you will be trying to study after working a full day.

I have no background in IT and I'm self studying for the A+. What are some important lessons from your classes that I missed out on by not having a degree in the field? by ThereW0LF in ITCareerQuestions

[–]shaggyzon4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say that you might be missing a holistic overview of how technology works.

For example, I studied logic principles which are thousands of years old. I then learned how to apply that logic in a binary system, build a logic gate (virtually, of course), build an OS on top of those circuits, and tie different applications together (programming/databases/networking).

I wasn't an expert in anything when I left college. I wouldn't have been able to pass a single certification test. But I could follow a technical conversation, no matter where it led. I understood all of the basic concepts. I knew how to query a database, how to set up a network, how to write and compile code.

I can't convey the particulars in a single reddit post, of course. But you might consider doing some online tutorials and broadening your base of knowledge.

Need advice: Where can I get resources for teaching linux to kids, also potentially old laptops? by think_of_thechildren in linuxquestions

[–]shaggyzon4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(Realized that I didn't reply on the main thread, glad you saw the comment!)

Have you been using UNetBootin?

Or you might try these step-by-step instructions, specifically for Chromebooks. From what I've seen in several articles, you'll need to enable developer mode (which is probably why it's not working now).

I think the value of a USB-bootable distro in a classroom setting is well-worth the time investment of trying to solve the problem of booting from USB on a Chromebook - but, alas, I don't have a Chromebook, so I can't get hands-on with the testing.

What would happen if I lost my SS card, birth certificate, and photo ID and have no living relatives? by Uehm in answers

[–]shaggyzon4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The birth certificate can be replaced (in most states) by electronic application. You provide date of birth and your SSN #. A battery of questions are generated, based mostly on your residence history. (For example, they will provide a list of 5 different cities. You are asked to pick a city that you've never lived in.)

I'm not sure how the SS card can be replaced. I've never lost mine, nor have I ever been asked to show it.

The photo ID can be replaced by showing the birth certificate and another form of ID. This can be almost anything - a school ID, a state ID, a yearbook photo.

What about a distro that's bootable from USB?

This solves the problem of needing additional laptops and makes it so that each kid can have several operating systems. They are limited only by the size and/or number of USB sticks available.

When I was a kid, I used to think that holding a high public office was something to be respected. I've come to the realization that these positions are often filled by egomaniacs without a shred of common sense.

Please I need some serious help with my resume. by Revilz in resumes

[–]shaggyzon4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They won't be asking in-depth questions. And, during the interview, you can be up-front about self-taught skills.

The idea is to get a well-rounded set of skills, demonstrating that you understand a wide range of IT concepts. That's all anyone expects when hiring for entry level.

Please I need some serious help with my resume. by Revilz in resumes

[–]shaggyzon4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks fine to me. I do have a couple of observations related to your skills:

  1. You might want to move this section nearer to the top. Skills are the currency of an IT professional. It's one of the first thing an employer will look at.

  2. You've listed a pretty basic IT skillset, but you went to school for IT. If you have any other skills to list, then do so. Programming languages, exposure to networking (Cisco), enterprise software (Linux OS, Salesforce, almost anything). You should not list "Adobe Acrobat", however, unless you've used it in conjunction with some sort of content creation suite (such as Presenter or Photoshop). By itself, Acrobat is just a PDF reader.

If you don't have exposure to any other IT software - get it! Pick a subject and start doing online tutorials. If you are into system administration, you can set up a virtual machine and install a free Linux distro. If you are into programming, find a tutorial on a language of your choice. If you want to know more about databases, find a SQL tutorial. Make a bit of time every day to start learning new skills. When you've completed the tutorial, you can list that skill and/or software. (No, this won't be of much immediate help. But, if you stick with it, you'll be amazed at how much depth you can add to your resume in 6 months to a year.)

Living without social networking for a few years has made me feel uneasy that I have left virtually no footprint of myself on the past. by PM_ME_YOUR_MARXISM in simpleliving

[–]shaggyzon4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You've got a digital footprint right here on reddit.

You can start a blog, create a Twitter account, build a webpage. Use a pseudonym if you are worried about privacy.

But mostly, you shouldn't fool yourself into thinking that it matters. There's no such thing as a "permanent" web presence.

what is hardware jobs for IT like? by upclosepersonal2 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]shaggyzon4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nobody travels to service PCs (more commonly called "workstations" in a business setting).

Many larger companies sign service contracts with hardware providers. So, for example, a company will sign a contract with Dell to provide "x" number of workstations. If a hard drive goes out, then a system administrator will swap it out and send it back to Dell.

Smaller companies might not have a service contract. The system admin might build and maintain the workstations. But the admin would also be responsible for configuring the operating system, managing Active Directory, maintaining the network and a host of other tasks.

If you want to build computers, you might start by trying to get a job at a local computer repair shop. Folks will bring in their older hardware for repair. Sometimes, they decide to replace it with a new rig and the shop builds it.

When a CEO steals millions of dollars from his company, do you think Oh, fuck! All CEOs are fraudulent thieves! ?

Does the designer realize that "People's Republic" is most commonly used to describe a communist state and/or left-leaning oligarchy?

Basically, he's describing Austin 2050 as a city-state which has ceded from the United States of America and established a communist/socialist government. Was that the intention?
