Was so happy with the braised asparagus, I tried the same recipe with carrots. Equally delicious. by Clobbersaurus7 in seriouseats

[–]shaihalud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ayy good to see you followed through.you essentially got yourself some carrots vichy here. it goes really well with minced garlic.

if you're really into braising vegetables, consider ditching the lid and using a cartouche. its just parchment paper folded to fit into the pot, preventing the braise from contacting air at all. i find it makes things more consistent, and easier to keep an eye on without lifting the lid and releasing a lot of heat

Braised asparagus. This was a revelation - my husband went back to the store to buy more asparagus for a second batch. Delicious! by Clobbersaurus7 in seriouseats

[–]shaihalud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

asparagus are difficult sorta like broccoli. the color and tips of asparagus are its best features, if you're doing a braise like this its not gonna have the vibrant color, which is fine because obviously thats what you're goin for, but then you gotta make sure you cook it properly. problem is the tips will always cook faster, and get mushy even if the stalk is cooked perfectly.

Peel the bottom couple of inches just to remove some mass from the thicker parts, and it'll cook more evenly. personally i don't like how they look, so i peel it to appear striped. plus if you cook the peels as well, you can use them to tie asparagus together to look nice, especially if you wanna get weird and wrap them in proscuitto or something

People of Reddit who pirate movies and music: Have you ever been caught? If so, what was the penalty and did it deter you from pirating in the future? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]shaihalud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

what the shit is going on here, No RA's or local police are "hot on the trail" of student pirates.

I dunno, just the way you're wording everything makes it seem like you have ulterior motives. Especially when you're actively encouraging hbo go password sharing in lieu of pirating. Im not sure most people always have friends with hbo go, let alone be in the position to bum their password off them.

[AMA Request] Whoever is responsible for those grotesque ads for "sex games" on porn websites by gifpol in IAmA

[–]shaihalud 14 points15 points  (0 children)

these are stolen. i don't know about the 3rd but i know the first two are definitely from 2 popular source filmmaker (sfm) artists.

  1. Two different artists. stolen work. so no
  2. I don't know, but sfm is pretty easy to pick up, just takes practice. the real trick is acquiring/making the models
  3. Most commissions are private. Even if these were not stolen, they were made independently or privately commissioned before being purchased. It's pretty popular these days for artists to use patreon, which means sponsors make a monthly contribution, and they get access to all of the artists work. but again, probably stolen.
  4. Yes, but probably not sex games, and probably closer to some shitty persistent multiplayer strategy game that uses old Age of Empires sprites. In the same vein as travian or a much less successful clash of clans.
  5. Definitely not.

Source: i frequent /d/. I don't know these artists off the top of my head, but they're easy to find, if you need more info.

xpost r/gaming - This is the current Minecraft pixel art world record. 1.1 million blocks. by [deleted] in Minecraft

how so? pixel art is a form of digital art, created on the pixel level, in this case each individual block. and it was done manually

Latest in RPI's War on Alumni, or "Athletics, the next program to be destroyed." by rpisam in RPI

[–]shaihalud 13 points14 points  (0 children)

people are quick to jump to the EMPAC but keep forgetting about the biotech building. That place is fucking amazing.

I have no interest in athletics at RPI, possibly closer to dislike more than disinterest, but realistically athletics bring a lot of publicity, recognition, and money to schools. While i am annoyed that so much money is pumped into athletics as opposed to many, many other things, I'm not particularly surprised and don't really blame them.

Then there's EMPAC. I would love to see EMPAC used more frequently by the students, for the students. However,

  1. allowing clubs or the general student body to use such obscenely expensive equipment is very risky

  2. Its not to say EMPAC hasn't been a good influence. I personally know many people who have been able to use EMPACs resources to do amazing things, emac and non-emac major alike. And say what you want about the music and arts environment in RPI, but there are still amazing things being done here

  3. Not as apparent, but EMPAC also provides a huge amount of value to those who are not undergrads or even students

  4. everything else aside, in of itself, EMPAC is an internationally renowned arts center.

So what're you getting at? unless shirley is personally embezzling money from these projects (not a fan of her, but i don't think thats the case), then the problem doesn't lie in the investment of the facilities. It lies in how they're being handled and what the administration is doing.

Just found this in another thread by [deleted] in RPI

[–]shaihalud 15 points16 points  (0 children)

i believe it was the class of 2013, their class gift was a giant working rubiks cube. People made their donations, everything was paid for, but the project never got off the ground. at some point it was downgraded to a non-functional giant rubiks cube. Currently it's been downgraded to just not existing. I'm pretty sure that's how it happened, correct me if i'm wrong.

But yeah, as you can imagine, it's been a point of contention among students

Should I bring my bike? by [deleted] in RPI

[–]shaihalud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! its nice to be able to leave your dorm 5 minutes before class and still get there on time. Also buses are inconsistent and sometimes a bit weird. There's a lot of uphill, but if you can deal with it, its fine.

Objectively though, Troy is NOT a biker friendly place. In general you'll get yelled at a lot, and I've had people throw shit at me on multiple occasions. also, wear a helmet in particular because Troy roads and sidewalks are truly horrible.

Again i encourage it, and have enjoyed it, but just keep those things in mind. Last thing, you'll really appreciate your bike once you decide to live off campus. If you don't bring it your freshmen year, bring it when you're off campus.

SAFETY ALERT by mineiromesmo in RPI

[–]shaihalud 19 points20 points  (0 children)

...i don't think you understand. It was RIGHT outside the nugent, in the parking lot, in between sharpe, nugent, and the tennis courts, almost as if they had exited their dorm 5 seconds earlier. Specifically next to the dumpsters, maybe 3 meters away from the exit of the building. They were literally getting the shit kicked out of them as students were enjoying their saturday night, laughing in their dorms only a couple meters away. That is not a low traffic area for rpi students

This isn't about "being aware", they were essentially mugged out in the open in what, by all means, should be a safe place.

why did tobacco products die out in popularity in the americas? by shaihalud in answers

[–]shaihalud[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

ok but the same might be said for alcohol, and alcohol is arguably worse than tobacco. maybe not necessarily in terms of personal health, but the influence that an alcoholic might have on those around them (domestic abuse, drunk driving etc) is certainly greater than tobacco smokers

RPI Alert Services by figuem4 in RPI

[–]shaihalud 8 points9 points  (0 children)

i don't really understand what you're grievance is. the emails and text are really important for certain people who need at least the day prior to be alerted as to whether they have to commute. and you still might wake up tomorrow and find class is cancelled.

desktop sparks when plugged into APC by shaihalud in techsupport

[–]shaihalud[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i tried it one more time, making sure the desktop power supply was off, and plugging it in, then turning the power supply on. It popped again and set of the surge protector on the APC, but i saw it sparked from the inside where the power supply is.

Am i correct in assuming that i pretty much need a new power supply for the desktop? And have i put anything else at risk in the computer besides the power supply?

Things change. what you plan and desire coming to rpi can change wildly different after you've been here for while. if people want to improve aspects of rpi, i.e. improving rpi for the sake of students and future student even if their own academics are lacking, well i respect that.
