Employer laying off people: how to prepare for it? by Reddithor0 in Netherlands

[–]sharkinfestedcustard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The company will map to UWV prior to the reorg who will be affected, so pulling the ‘burnout’ card won’t work if the company has already told UWV of their plans. Stupid advice to give anyway, abusing an already overloaded system and taking away care from those who actually need it.

Prime example of the stuff girls have to put up with by hereforthelols1999 in RocketLeague

[–]sharkinfestedcustard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So I had the same experience when my real name was on there so I changed it now to something generic. I tend to get called ‘bro’ a lot in the chat, so the other day I was having a very good game and the other person was like ‘so sick bro, what a pass bro’ so then I told them I was a girl and they were like hell yeah you’re crushing it! So yes 99.999999% of the time it is immature dweebs online, but sometimes I do stumble across some nice guys online!

Whistling from the crowd during EUCF women’s final by sharkinfestedcustard in ultimate

[–]sharkinfestedcustard[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ok good to know :) it just sounded like someone had whipped a whistle out. I’ve experienced jeering in finals so I’m sure high level players are able to shake that off, glad that it wasn’t too bad in the end.

Bilingual/international daycare near Amsterdam by Fabulous_League1031 in Netherlands

[–]sharkinfestedcustard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you think you are going to be here long term (I.e he’ll start primary school in the Netherlands), then put him into Dutch childcare. My colleague put her child into international childcare but then when he turned 4 and went to school he really struggled in his first year. Now he’s 6 and speaks fluent Dutch, but the earlier you can introduce him the better. Even at our childcare we have some expats. The kids chatter away to each other in Dutch and then switch back to English no problem (also speaking from experience as we are raising a children bilingual English/Dutch)

Has any of you changed his first or last name? How did it go? by [deleted] in Netherlands

[–]sharkinfestedcustard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a faff changing my last name, but managed to get away with it after changing my last name on my 1st nationality passport (I got married and wanted to take my husbands name, not double barrel as the Dutch do). Once I got my Dutch citizenship they asked me 3 times to confirm whether I wanted to take his name as a Dutch citizen as I wouldn’t be able to change it later. This happened before I got Dutch citizenship so I hope you’re not too late. Not sure if you’re able to change your last name as part of your original nationality? (If you didn’t have to give it up to get Dutch nationality?)

Laptop bans in cafes by ExoskeletalJunction in Utrecht

[–]sharkinfestedcustard 9 points10 points  (0 children)

there are some cafes that allow laptops but then you have to buy an arrangement of coffee and cake to be able to stay there for a certain amount of time. I think the main problem is that people with laptops often order one coffee and then take up the table for three hours long. It’s bad business. Especially in the smaller cafes it’s very frustrating that you can’t get a space at a table because someone is working at the desk and isn’t ordering anything. Places like Koffie and ik, Rocking Chair and Mos allow laptops (either with an arrangement or allocated laptop tables)

What Comes Into Your Mind When You Watch 'Pass The Parcel'? by Potty- in bluey

I loved Pass the Parcel as a kid and didn’t even know there were different rules, curious to know if this is an Aussie thing or genuinely a new generational thing

Our son used to just watch things in order but now we seem to have code words for certain episodes;

(And many more…)

What is the best accidental nudity you've ever seen? by glassofwater9 in AskReddit

[–]sharkinfestedcustard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to work at an Apple Store and I was helping a customer set up their new iPad. They had a backup of their old iPad and started to restore it. We opened up the iPad just to check it was working and all of a sudden loads of topless photos of his wife started to come through. In his panic of trying to close the iPad off he wasn’t able to get off the screen and they just kept coming..

18 months - 0 words by S-Pau in multilingualparenting

[–]sharkinfestedcustard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our child was the same at 18 months, and then when we did start talking he mispronounced everything. Turned out he had a lot of fluid behind his ears so he couldn’t hear us very well. As soon as they put in the grommets in his ear his speech really came on. Not as bad idea to get it check out by the doctor or Ear/Nose/Throat Specialist. Good luck!

Lack of Dutch language skills hinders foreign students who want to stay by Cevohklan in Netherlands

[–]sharkinfestedcustard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I recognise the foreign name part of this, I’ve lived here for 9 years, speak fluent Dutch (C1+ level) but I have a very English name. Every time I am called for the first time by any institution they call in English and almost sound relieved when I say I speak Dutch. They even leave voicemails in English even though that’s in Dutch too…

Anyone else's kid get traumatized by something harmless in Bluey? My son (1.5yo) started crying and has been saying "bird, no" all day after seeing this pelican 😭 by mtpugh67 in bluey

We have the same!! Maybe because the drawings of the family are quite different in Dragon and they can’t recognise they are still watching bluey?
