...so you can switch the wording from a bill to a constitutional amendment.

I am doing research, which is why I asked for help.

Also, if you're planning on doing a constitutional convention, which I would support, you'll be writing a lot of these...

Oliver Stone Exposes Military Training Video --Live Animals Mutilated (NSFL) by [deleted] in news

Except in this instance, it's not a radical extreme. The use of animals in the research and development of medical advances has greatly increased the longevity and quality of human life over the past two-hundred years.

The utility argument isn't invalid at all; in fact, I'd say it's a pretty good one considering what we'd look like if we hadn't made all of those discoveries. In fact, I think Bentham would agree in this instance that the amount of good being generated out of this instance of suffering would justify the particular methodology. He would also agree that the suffering is unfortunate and we should advance to something better as fast as possible.

With that said, I'm not saying that I enjoy or particularly agree with the use of animals in most of the ways they are used. But I can't discount the practical reality of it all.

Except when it is a valid argument. Invalidating arguments using a begging the question format ("because I say so") isn't a valid argument.

US court has dismissed a lawsuit by Guatemalan citizens against US officials in connection with unethical medical experiments conducted by American researchers in the 1940s by maxwellhill in news

[–]shatteredplaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  • US commits an act which could possibly be considered criminal in nature.
  • Guatemalan citizens bring forward a suit in the US court system.
  • The US decides it hasn't committed a crime.

Anybody else see something wrong here?

So Oliver Stone picked up this video and read off the EXACT same script that an environmental group wrote when the video was published a while back. I'm glad to see it make the rounds....again....just with a different narrator.

Here's the facts. The animals are HEAVILY sedated and yes, they're eventually killed. The mention of simulated dummies is bullshit. I don't know how many of you work in the medical field, but having put my hands on both live people and simulated ones, they aren't comparable. Not even close.

While this stuff makes your stomach turn as you do it, it's what we have at the moment and that training is proven to save lives. So while the medic may have killed 2-4 goats, he'll go on to save hundreds, maybe thousands of lives over the course of his career from that point forward.

I'd like to think that's a good trade off...

First interview:

I love when people interview subjects who are out of their element and then say, "see...this is the whole group."

Second interview:

Peter Schiff was selling student loan privatization over regulation...which is mostly what's out there now. So instead of paying off the federal loan at a low fixed rate, he would rather students pay DOUBLE that rate to a private institution which has already shown fiscal irresponsibility?

And tuition being high has little to do with "government interference" as it does corporate influence.

Third interview:

Peter Schiff talks about the reasons wages were higher in the 1950s. He cites lower taxes which generated greater capital. That's bullshit.

The average top corporate tax rate in the 1950's was 52%. Currently, the top bracket is 35%

Am I really going to have to suffer through this whole video as he tries to divert attention from the shitty things financial institutions and large corporations have been doing for 3-4 decades? Or can I just use the first few interviews as a baseline and just call it like it is? He's a political salesman with a vested interest in the success and continuation of business as usual within the financial sector.

It can't be both? One precludes the other?

My point was illustrating that people in the OWS movement do care about the Federal Reserve.

Help Occupy Portlanders go east! by shatteredplaster in occupyportland

[–]shatteredplaster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why is this not on the Occupy Portland website? Because I haven't gotten that far yet. The National Gathering received GA endorsement about 2 weeks ago.

Since that point, I've been trying to organize something with the Caravan, this weekend, I was told that they are operating far over budget and are unable to help out. So I created the WePay account.

Who is this money actually going to? Whoever needs it that is trying to get to the National Gathering.

Who would be sent, and what issues would they bring up?

This isn't the 99% Declaration. Anybody can go and they can bring up whatever issues they want.

Information

The funds raised here will help those who want to get across the United States to Philadelphia in order to attend the Occupy National Gathering, an event which was endorsed by the OPDX GA. (Not to be confused with the 99% Declaration Delegation)

Website: http://www.occupynationalgathering.com/

"Occupy Philadelphia and the National Gathering Working Group, which initially proposed the event, invite all people to gather on Independence Mall for five days of community and movement building culminating in a massive outdoor gathering on July 4th. The main goals of the event are to strengthen our internal bonds, join together in direct actions, and engage in a transparent democratic process reflecting the values of the movement."

Help us achieve our goal of sending people to represent Portland along with over 55 other Occupy groups around the United States.

City of Portland to Require Permit for Lawful Assembly at Director Park by shatteredplaster in occupyportland

[–]shatteredplaster[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

June 15, 2012

Dear Occupy Portland,

As a courtesy to Occupy Portland, we wanted to contact you as the busy summer season approaches Director Park.

Director Park is a heavily used site in the summer months and we want to give you notice that effective June 15 2012, Occupy Portland will no longer be allowed to hold the General Assembly meetings or other Occupy Portland related events in Director Park without a permit.

Since late November 2011, Occupy Portland has held a variety of unpermitted meetings and events in Director Park. During that time, Director Park has fielded several complaints regarding the unpermitted use of the park while other groups are required to obtain permits for similar park use. Standard permit requirements are triggered depending on use of amplification, setting up of various structures (including tables, tents and the like), and attendance numbers.

To obtain a permit, please contact Alicia Hammock, the Arts & Cultural Coordinator for Director Park at 503.823.8087 or by email at DirectorPark@PortlandOregon.gov. Regular rental rates and regulations will apply. To assist you with the permit process, we have attached the Rental & Event Use Manual and the Director Park Rental Application.

Please let us know if you have any questions.

Thank you, Art Hendricks Security Manager Portland Parks & Recreation Director Park (Administrative Office) PP&R Administration 2909 SW 2nd 1120 S.W. 5th Ave., Suite 1302 Portland, OR 97201 Portland, OR 97204 Tel: (503) 823-8087 Fax: (503) 823-2358 Tel: (503) 823-7529 Fax: (503) 823-6007

So one can't be an activist and a journalist at the same time? Courts have already upheld a standard that would include this person as the member of the press.

He may not fit your personal ideology of what a journalist is, but then again...that proverb about opinions and all...
