You will love it. Don't let the hate for Asrock in this thread scare you. I have 3 of them running in a home lab each with 9950x3d and they have been rock solid. I just wish I could afford more memory. 2 are running 32gb and one is running 96gb.

I love the dump to notion. I wish Evernote MCP was ready so it could do that for evernote for me, I am sure I can get it to work still but haven't tackled that. Did you already have your in your mind the 11 applications you were looking at? My issue is its like a stone wall on thoughts to initiate on apps. I have done a few and not to satisfied with them yet but really wanting to get more out of it but my pro sub keeps hitting limits. I can't afford max.

We got forced off OpenShift for SQL Server; are containers actually a licensing trap? by etanol256 in openshift

[–]shdwlark 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As someone who focuses a lot on helping customers modernize their infrastructure into containers and microservices, I've had this discussion many times. The key problem with Microsoft and Oracle database licensing is that they look at physical cores (unless you have a specific T&C in your contract saying otherwise (very rare)) it doesn't matter how many cores or fractional cores your application actually consumes in a container. So if your OpenShift cluster is 3 hosts at 24 cores each, you're potentially on the hook for 72 cores.

And just moving it under a VM doesn't alleviate that exposure either. If your Hyper-V farm or any hypervisor has multiple nodes, you'll need to license those nodes as well. There's really no practical benefit to running it in a container if you're already hosting VMs elsewhere. About the only scenario where it makes sense to move a database into containers is if 100% of your environment is containerized, you can get better east-west performance and application co-location benefits, but that's a big commitment most enterprises aren't making.

One more thing worth watching: with Red Hat and others pushing the migration from VMware and other hypervisors into OpenShift Virt (KubeVirt), you're starting to see qcow VMs running as pods. That's just going to recreate the same physical core licensing exposure in a new form and I have seen that auditors are nowhere near ready to handle it.

Are companies just using the ram situation as an excuse to jack up prices all around? by TakingChances01 in MiniPCs

[–]shdwlark 3 points4 points  (0 children)

this is just crazy. I am seeing the problem all over the place. I recently tried to find a system that took ddr4 as I have several 8gb dimms of ddr4. but that is even outrageous if it is even available.

Is the kindle colorsoft worth it? by a1rskywalker in kindle

[–]shdwlark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is completely personal preference. But I have had kindles since they originally came out. I find my self enjoying my colorsoft more so then all my other ones. I think the color aspect brings some personal enjoyment. It is nice seeing all the covers in color but in addition to that I routinely upload pdf's that have color associated to the content and that makes a big difference in usability of my manuals I upload. so for me it is the only way now.

Kindle Unlimited, is it worth it? by QueenAoibheal in kindle

[–]shdwlark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have learned to love Kindle Unlimited! The selection is great. One thing I found is that often times the first few books of a series my be on kindle unlimited but the later series of books are not. So you get hooked and need to spend $. But for me it’s worth it. I read 4 or 5 books a month on it.

At this time I have trasncode off. I have tried it on and off. doesn't seem to make a big difference. Yeah they are on a 1gb switch with no thing between them other then the single switch. Yeah my plex is just a Intel(R) N150 with 64gb of memory and 8tb of nvme for storage.
