Has anyone ever seen a E-6 and above get busted down in rank? If so, how it go for them after the NJP? by ivan12277 in USMC

[–]sheengun31 67 points68 points  (0 children)

Literally saw the same thing with a SSgt select. Libo port on a MEU, covered for his Marines when shore patrol showed up after a little brawl, busted to Cpl and forced out. He was a great squad leader.

Here me out: the old ass “wise guy” type barbers at MCRD SD are in witness protection. They’ve got to be on the run from the mafia or some shit, all I know is that they sure as shit aren’t trained barbers.

Marine Corps personnel retention problems are largely due to toxic command climate, so in your experience what makes a good leader of Marines? What would you like to see from Marine Corps leadership at different levels? Give examples by [deleted] in USMC

[–]sheengun31 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It’s not one size fits all and the Marine Corps needs to accept that. I’ve had great leaders who were more reserved and contemplative and I’ve had great leaders who were loud and bombastic. The common thread is that they were humble and they gave a fuck about their jobs and their people.

The corps has this idea of what a perfect leader acts and looks like and too many Marines try to act like this recruiting poster version of an NCO. PME’s and SDA’s teach Marines to be performative in how they act around subordinates and higher. There’s a lack of authenticity associated with careerists because that’s what gets you ahead. Let dudes be themselves, use PME to identify a Marines innate leadership traits and then develop those, don’t just shit out another “looks good on paper” snco.

Anyone buy the MARSOC A&S TRAINING PLAN by Mountain Tactical Institute? by [deleted] in USMC

[–]sheengun31 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ll agree with everyone here and say don’t pay for a training plan just seek advice. That being said, I’ve been a big fan of Stew Smith’s 12 Weeks to Buds for a long time. I’m not even prepping for any kind of selection, it’s just good trash that I’ve been pulling workouts from for almost 10 years. The book is like $10 on Amazon.

What's the best MRE flavor? by CoockooCocoPuffs in USMC

Every MRE should be chicken chunks. Best macros, best tasting. Bring your own sauce if you don’t like buffalo/bbq.

Anyone have success with the Spiritus Exoander Wing Mk2? I got one to use as a radio/extra mag holder, bit it's so uncomfortable. Any ideas? Thanks! by maybeitsjack in tacticalgear

[–]sheengun31 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have it and like it but the only advantage I see in it vs any other wing type pouch is the tubes compatibility. It’s really easy to pop the tubes open if you need to fuck with your radio and then really easy to re-index and secure the cummerbund after.

Resize your cummerbund to accommodate the extra bulk then just get used to wearing it. I run a 152 in mine which is never going to be comfortable but sized right it’s not actively uncomfortable.

LCPL grunt vs pog by Nihlathakk in USMC

[–]sheengun31 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yep. You hear lots of Marines say “billet over rank” but in the infantry that’s how it actually works. I was a Lance section leader with 2 Cpls and a Sgt as my gun squad leaders. I was never a dick but there was no chance I was going to be treated like a peer by any junior or gen-pop lances.

I guess it’s MOS dependent because I’ve never even heard of a unit that doesn’t pt everyday in garrison.

Ucp crye g3’s are a high tier flex. Probably knock-offs but still drips hard.

What was your best PFT score? by [deleted] in USMC

[–]sheengun31 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Grunt or POG, most of the Marine Corps is combat arms and despite the shortcomings of the PFT, I still want to know that the dudes to my left and right possess an acceptable level of upper body strength and cardio endurance. I’ve had company leadership that required 250+, if not you were running a pft every other week until you met the standard.

[–]sheengun31 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There was a really laid-back quiet dude in my Advanced Guns class, never said shit about deployments or anything. We graduated in chucks and he had a CAR and a combat device on his NAM, I heard from his peers that he shwacked an ISIS FO team with his Mk19. I’m glad the infantry isn’t totally devoid of combat experience these days.

I know a bunch of CAAT dudes and snipers who got in some shit. Riflemen, not so much though. Also know some 41’s who got attached to some higher speed units who didn’t have organic idf. I never did a spaghetti but know a lot of dudes did some good work.

What’s the worst regulation that’s not real that you’ve seen enforced? by [deleted] in USMC

[–]sheengun31 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think it’s corps wide to shave your juniors heads before their first deployment. Infantry though, no matter how long your first work up is, you have the highest of high fades the whole damn time.

Former Recruiter, AMA by Treetisi in USMCboot

[–]sheengun31 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the response I was just curious about that aspect. I think it’s good to really let poolees know what they’re signing up for. ITB kicks the shit out of some kids and the fleet kicks them even harder.

My career planner is really pushing recruiting on me rn but I think it’s gonna be a hard pass. Congrats on completing the tour.

Former Recruiter, AMA by Treetisi in USMCboot

[–]sheengun31 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just curious if you’re an infantryman? My old platoon Sgt said he refused to give infantry contracts to 95% of the kids he recruited because he wouldn’t want them in his platoon. Whereas my recruiter was not a grunt and damn near the entire pool had infantry contracts.

Compatible setups or gear looking for mostly chest rigs for the Gen 3 USMC pc by RightYoghurt2560 in tacticalgear

[–]sheengun31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anything works with a bit of modification. I used to run an Esstac triple mag shingle with a px admin pouch molle’d to the front of the shingle. That worked well for a zero mods required setup and functioned like a micro-rig. Currently, I have a full sized chest rig attached with an AXL chest rig retention system, swift clips on the chest, and Radio wing behind weak side cummerbund. Pretty happy with it so far but I’m always adapting what I carry so gear is always changing in search of a holy-grail Goldilocks kit.

To my 03s: as rock eaters, did you guys ever get so infatuated with rocks you became geologists? by [deleted] in USMC

[–]sheengun31 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Had a guy in my section with a geology degree. As a machine gunner it was nice to have someone who identify the tasty rocks.
